Chapter 485 Understanding and Respect
Evans and Kittie exchanged confused looks.
'Why would Pearl say that right after coming back? Does she know something?'
They felt it but couldn't put it into words.
Pearl broke the silence, "I'm not your biological daughter, but you've treated me better than if I were."
She bowed to them.
With teary eyes, Pearl said, "I can't repay your kindness. But I'm still Pearl. I'll always remember your love. You'll always be my parents. This is all my savings."
Pearl used to transfer money to them regularly, which they saved. They even withdrew cash to give her, worried she might be struggling.
Now, Pearl wanted to give them all her money at once, fearing she might not get another chance.
She wasn't sure about her future.
"Pearl! We have money. Why are you giving us all yours? Are you hiding something? Don't do anything foolish!"
Kittie, anxious, grabbed Pearl's shoulders, her voice breaking and eyes red.
Pearl seemed like she was saying goodbye.
Oscar's death had hit her hard, but life had to go on. The dead couldn't come back, and the living had to keep living.
Kittie couldn't hold back her tears. "Pearl, do you have something to tell us? Did you find your biological parents? Are they giving you trouble? Or have you made some plans? Can you tell me what's on your mind?"
Evans was worried Pearl might be hurt or lose hope.
Pearl shook her head, "I found out my blood type over there. I didn't find my biological parents. I want to do something meaningful. I'm going to a war zone, and I won't have much time to contact you. So, I thought of giving you all this money now."
Kittie gasped, "You're not planning to become a war correspondent, are you?"
Given Pearl's past as a journalist, Kittie instinctively knew, and Pearl didn't deny it.
Evans and Kittie usually didn't interfere with Pearl's career, but this time, they were firmly against her becoming a war correspondent.
Evans held Kittie's hand, "Pearl, when we brought you home, you were so small and often sick. We've always treated you as our own. The war zone is dangerous. If something happens to you, what will Kittie and I do?"
"Pearl, don't go. I know you're very sad. Stay in Willow Creek, and I'll be with you, okay?"
If Pearl didn't want to get married, she wouldn't. But Kittie just wanted her to be happy.
Pearl was touched. They weren't her biological parents, but they were the best, giving her a home.
In her darkest times, they held her hand, guiding her out of the darkness.
Pearl's eyes filled with tears, but she managed a smile. "I've decided. Oscar died protecting people. I'm continuing his work in my own way. If I die there, at least it will be for a good cause."
Pearl had already made up her mind. The night she returned, she submitted her application online. With her experience, she got a quick response.
She had three days to say goodbye and settle everything before leaving for Serenea.
Evans stayed silent, and Kittie cried.
In the end, Evans gave in. "Even young birds must fly. Pearl, if this is your decision, go ahead. But call us whenever you can, or Kittie won't sleep."
While Pearl was away, Kittie had insomnia. They missed being there when Pearl had her child, a regret that would last forever.
Pearl had lost her child and husband. Now she found out about her origins and was heading to a war zone.
The more Evans thought about it, the more emotional he got, and he started to cry.
He held Pearl and said, "Pearl, stay here. We'll take care of you. If you go and something happens, what will we do? We just want you to live well."
Pearl's heart was torn.
She knew her biological father was RavenWing but didn't know her biological mother. Neither Louis nor RavenWing had mentioned her.
Kittie and Evans were so good to her, even wanting her to stay. This was something RavenWing could never offer.
Pearl hugged them. "I understand, but I still want to go."
Since Pearl was so determined, what else could they say?
"Let Kittie cook for you. You need to eat well," Evans said, handing Kittie a tissue and turning away to wipe his own tears.
Pearl felt terrible but kept her emotions in check.
Soon, Kittie had whipped up a feast. Though they were sad, they respected Pearl's decision. They returned the bank card she had given them and gave her another one.
