Chapter 234 Fear of Your Pain, Fear of Someone Hurting You
"Oscar..."
Before Pearl could finish, the door flew open.
Magdalen burst in, eyes locked on Pearl, a huge grin on her face. "Pearl, why didn't you tell me you were pregnant? I just found out! If I'd known, I wouldn't have gone on vacation. Am I the last to know?"
Magdalen, suitcase in hand, headscarf and sunglasses still on, looked like she just got off a plane. Her skin was tanned, and she had a bunch of stuff with her.
Pearl's words to Oscar were cut off.
Pearl quickly sat up. "Magdalen!"
Seeing Magdalen, Pearl's mood lifted like the sun breaking through clouds.
Magdalen dropped her suitcase, pushed Oscar aside, and hugged Pearl. "My dear Pearl, it must be tough carrying the Brown family baby. How are you holding up?"
Pearl hugged her back, feeling emotional. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming back? I missed you."
Magdalen smiled. "I wanted to surprise you and check if Oscar's been treating you right!"
Oscar stepped aside, lips pursed.
In the Brown family, Pearl liked Magdalen the most. She was open-minded, got along with everyone, and treated Pearl like family.
"I'm fine," Pearl said, not wanting to bring up her issues with Oscar.
"I don't believe you," Magdalen said, taking off her sunglasses and glaring at Oscar. "If he didn't mistreat you, why are you in the hospital? "
Pearl grabbed Magdalen's arm. "I was just tired from work. Oscar brought me here."
"What kind of work exhausts you like this? What about the baby?" Magdalen checked Pearl over. "You've lost weight. Has Oscar been neglecting you? Are you two getting a divorce?"
Before Magdalen left, Oscar had promised her they wouldn't divorce, but she was still worried.
Seeing Pearl in the hospital made her even more suspicious.
"We're not getting a divorce, Magdalen. Don't worry!" Pearl reassured her.
Oscar, hands in his pockets, said coolly, "You just got back. Why didn't you go home first? Why come here with your suitcase?"
Magdalen shot him a look. "I'm worried about Pearl. If she was fine, would I rush over?"
Oscar stayed silent.
"Why didn't you tell me Pearl is pregnant?" Magdalen was annoyed. "I knew I'd be the last to know!"
"If I hadn't asked where you were, I wouldn't have known you were in the hospital, or that Pearl was pregnant!"
Oscar remained silent.
"What's all this? It looks awful. Do you even know how to take care of a pregnant woman?" Magdalen scolded. "Eat the food I brought. It's from top chefs. I packed it just for you to nourish yourself properly."
She placed all the items she brought on the table.
The food was in insulated containers.
Oscar had also brought food from a five-star hotel specifically for pregnant women.
Magdalen dismissed it, pushing it aside and opening her containers. "This is carp soup, great for pregnant women. Here's beef stewed with potatoes, and pork trotters with vegetables..."
Magdalen directed her words mostly at Oscar. "This is your first time, so learn how to take care of a pregnant woman. You'll need to take care of the baby later too. These are the things she should eat. Make sure she avoids anything that promotes blood circulation; it can cause a miscarriage."
Magdalen kept talking, and Oscar finally said, "She's my wife. I know how to take care of her."
"You don't know how to take care of her!" Magdalen shot back. "You let her work herself to exhaustion. She needs rest, not work. Do you understand? You have no experience!"
Oscar looked at Pearl, then at her belly, and said calmly, "She doesn't have to go to work."
Pearl didn't want them to argue, especially not over her. "Magdalen, please, sit down. I'm hungry and want to eat something."
"Alright."
Hearing this, Magdalen stopped her nagging and quickly prepared food for Pearl, saying gently, "It's still hot.Take your time."
"Okay." Pearl nodded.
Seeing Pearl smile after Magdalen arrived, Oscar guessed they would continue chatting and decided to leave the room to give them some time.
Pearl sipped the soup and ate the nutritious meals, but she still felt a bit nauseous.
"Feeling nauseous during pregnancy is normal, but you still need to eat well," Magdalen said, noticing Pearl's reaction to the smell. "But don't overdo it. If the baby grows too big, it could lead to a difficult labor. It will be hard for you and could harm your body. No matter what, you must take care of yourself, understand?"
As a woman, Magdalen understood Pearl's suffering.
Giving birth was even more challenging.
Despite medical advancements, childbirth could still be dangerous. Difficult labor was like passing through the gates of hell.
She was very concerned about Pearl.
Pearl held Magdalen's hand, taking all her advice to heart. "I know, Magdalen. Don't worry. I will take care of myself. You don't need to worry too much about me. I'm not a child anymore; I understand these things."
"I worry about you. I will always worry while you're pregnant!" Magdalen cared deeply for Pearl, which made her worry excessively. "I'm afraid you'll suffer, and I'm afraid someone might hurt you."
Before Pearl got pregnant, there were already people eyeing her position as Oscar's wife.
Now, who knows if they would harm Pearl?
Magdalen had to be extra vigilant.
"Don't worry so much that you can't sleep, or you'll start losing hair!" Knowing Magdalen's concerns, Pearl could only joke.
Hearing this, Magdalen protected her hair. "That won't do. My hair is my life!"
Magdalen and Pearl chatted happily.
Oscar stood outside, glancing through the window but not disturbing them.
He hadn't said much about Pearl's pregnancy and naturally wouldn't tell Magdalen either.
There was always a barrier in his heart.
Oscar went downstairs and lit a cigarette.
Not long after, Mae walked up to him.
