Chapter 437 A Matter of Life and Death
Paloma ran back.
Everyone sighed in relief. "Paloma, where'd you go? You almost scared us to death."
"Where's Mr. Brown? I need to find him now!" Paloma's eyes were red and she was frantic.
"Mr. Brown isn't back yet. Where's Pearl? She went looking for you. Why are you alone?"
"Pearl was taken. I need Mr. Brown to save her." Paloma was desperate. "Where is he? I need to tell him now."
"When you went missing, Pearl sent someone with a message. He should be back soon."
Paloma waited anxiously. When she heard a car, she knew Oscar was back.
She rushed out and saw Oscar getting out of the car, looking serious.
"Mr. Brown, Pearl was taken! You need to save her!"
Oscar's face was stern. "Who took her?"
"I don't know," Paloma cried. "Why didn't I ask? They were after Pearl. She's in danger. We need to save her."
Paloma had few clues, but Oscar almost had it figured out.
Someone was still targeting Pearl.
It had to be The Crimson Eclipse Society, and Haley.
Oscar ordered, "We leave now!"
Meanwhile, Pearl was holding onto Giulia.
Pearl gripped the end of the whip, not too tight, just enough to hold Giulia hostage.
Giulia, who was bossing people around, had these men listening to her.
She came here thinking about self-protection.
Giulia was too scared to move and changed her tone. "Let go first. We can talk. You're in my hands now. You can't escape. Don't act rashly, or it won't just be a beating."
Pearl said, "If I let you go, I'll die faster. Since you're in charge, as long as I have you, I won't die so quickly. If you don't want to suffer, make them back off!"
The whip's barbs pressed against Giulia's neck. Pearl wasn't using force, but the sharp points still hurt Giulia.
Seeing her silent, Pearl applied more pressure. "Why aren't you saying anything?"
"Okay," Giulia said sensibly. "You all go down first. Don't scare her. My life is in her hands."
The men exchanged glances, thinking.
To be safe, Pearl said, "Stand aside. No talking, and don't leave."
"Why are you doing this?" Giulia said. "You've come to our place. You have no future. You might as well accept your fate."
But Pearl didn't listen. "Aren't you still in my hands? How could I not have a future?"
"What do you want?"
Pearl looked at Chiara, whose fingers were almost rotten, cowering in the corner, unable to resist. "This child's hand is rotting. Shouldn't you treat her wounds first?"
Pearl's words shocked them.
"You still don't get what this place is," Giulia sneered. "If I were going to treat her wounds, I wouldn't have let her in here. People who come here either end up crippled or dead. They're all worthless lives."
This place was indeed cruel.
Human lives were worthless.
Pearl couldn't stand it. Her arm was sore from holding the position. She saw many torture tools on the table, picked up a dagger, and released the whip.
Seeing the slack, Giulia immediately tried to escape.
But she froze again.
Pearl was behind her, pressing the dagger against her waist. "Don't move. You want to escape? Do you really not want to live?"
Giulia could tell Pearl was serious and smiled. "I wasn't trying to escape. My waist was just sore. Let's talk this out. We can't stay in a standoff forever."
Pearl said, "I'll ask you a few questions. Answer them properly."
"Okay, go ahead."
"What is this place?"
Giulia smiled. "This is where we keep slaves. Once you're here, don't think about leaving."
"Slaves?" Pearl was shocked. "Are there still slaves? You guys are really bold, not afraid of being caught."
Giulia said, "You're not from Eldoria, right? Here, slaves are nothing. You should focus on surviving."
Being locked up here meant she was treated as a slave.
No wonder the castle was so big, and the people inside were timid and silent—they had been beaten into submission. Once here, there was no way out.
Of course, they were doing illegal things; how could they let anyone leave?
Pearl looked at Giulia and continued, "Is this RavenWing's territory?"
Giulia's face changed dramatically. "What are you up to? How dare you mention RavenWing? Shut your mouth."
This showed that RavenWing was someone they all feared.
"Have you seen RavenWing?" Pearl asked.
Giulia's face turned pale, looking rather reverent. "No one in this castle has had the chance to see RavenWing. You'd better stop asking about RavenWing, or you'll bring death upon yourself."
So, this really was RavenWing's territory.
She had gambled correctly, but she also knew she was taking a huge risk.
Coming here, her life was hanging by a thread.
She wasn't sure if she would make it out alive.
Although she had captured Giulia, she couldn't guard her forever. She didn't know how to deal with them.
"Ms. Romano, she was just trying to help me. If you want to punish someone, punish me. Don't make things difficult for her." Suddenly, Chiara knelt on the ground, kowtowing to Giulia. She was grateful to Pearl for standing up for her and feared Giulia would make things difficult for Pearl.
Pearl also knew Giulia's methods and wouldn't let her go easily. "Giulia, I'm not a slave here. I was sent by a man named Jorge. You should know Carol, right?"
"Carol?" Giulia said, half-believing. "The long-lost Ms. Mitchell? How are you connected to Ms. Mitchell?"
"Who knows? Since I'm here, I didn't plan on leaving. I just hope you won't hold a grudge. Ms. Mitchell wants me alive. You wouldn't want to ruin Ms. Mitchell's plans by showing her my corpse, would you?" Pearl thought Carol had thrown her in here to torment her.
Giulia hesitated. "In that case, I'll have someone ask. I'm just a manager here. Not only you, but even I can't leave. Holding me hostage is useless."
Pearl had thought of this too.
She was temporarily safe, but that didn't mean she would be safe in the future.
"Okay." Giulia signaled with her eyes to send someone to ask.
Soon, the person returned and nodded to Giulia.
Giulia smiled and said, "Alright, let me go, and we'll all be fine. What do you think?"
Pearl couldn't leave here.
She had to take what she could get and released Giulia.
Giulia quickly escaped from Pearl's side and changed her expression in a second. "Seize her!"
Several men moved in to grab Pearl.
Pearl couldn't fight them, so she looked at Giulia. "Didn't we just agree?"
Giulia touched her injured face and neck. She had never suffered such a loss. "You come to our place and expect to leave unscathed? Ms. Mitchell instructed us to keep you alive but to 'entertain' you well. Otherwise, you wouldn't be in this hell!"
Giulia held a whip in her hand, glaring at Pearl with a cold smile, ready to punish her.
"Ms. Romano, don't do this. Punish me instead. I'll take her place." Chiara cried, grabbing Giulia's pant leg.
Giulia kicked her away. "Who do you think you are? You have no right to speak here."
Chiara was kicked away like trash, almost lifeless.
Pearl's face turned grim.
Giulia strutted up to Pearl. "Today, I'm going to show you my power. If I don't flay you alive, where will my authority stand? Everyone, watch closely. This is what happens when you defy me!"
Giulia took out the barbed whip.
One lash would tear the skin apart.
Giulia raised her hand forcefully.
Pearl clenched her fists, feeling some fear. She gritted her teeth and quickly turned her head away.
However, a gunshot rang out.
A bullet came from outside, striking the whip and snapping it in half.
