Chapter 921 Narrow Roads Meet
As Lyra was about to leave, the doorbell suddenly rang, and the door opened and closed.
Lyra's eyes widened as she saw who walked in.
It was him!
Ruben's gaze swept over her, and he raised an eyebrow slightly, as if he was a bit surprised too.
"Excuse me," Lyra said, not wanting to interact with him. He was blocking her way, so she had no choice but to speak.
Fortunately, Ruben didn't intend to stop her. He stepped aside, making way for her.
Lyra felt a slight sense of relief.
However, just as she was about to walk past him, she heard Ruben's low voice, "What a coincidence, Jeffery's little assistant."
Lyra looked up but said nothing and left.
Ruben stood there with his hands in his pockets for a moment, then a faint smile of interest appeared on his face. He walked into the flower shop and soon came out with a bouquet of carnations.
Back at home, Lyra thought about the person she had just encountered. After some hesitation, she decided to call Jeffery.
But how much of it was really about Ruben?
That was anyone's guess.
"Mr. Gray, I just ran into that guy who used to oppose you."
"Who?" Jeffery's voice was hoarse.
Lyra was immediately concerned; her attention diverted. "Mr. Gary, are you feeling unwell?"
Jeffery's tone was casual. "It's just the change of seasons, a normal reaction. Go on."
Lyra suppressed her worry and continued, "It was Dr. Larson, Ruben. I ran into him."
In his office, Jeffery sat up straight.
"Where did you see him?"
Lyra wanted to say it was at the flower shop, but didn't want to reveal the gift she was planning to give. So she lied, "I ran into him on my way home."
Jeffery didn't press further, seemingly believing her. "Be careful."
After a moment, he added, "Actually, I'll come by tomorrow."
"No, not tomorrow. I have something to do. Come the day after tomorrow," Lyra said urgently.
The flowers she ordered were arriving tomorrow. If Jeffery wasn't there, how would he receive them?
Jeffery found it odd but sensed Lyra's strong resistance even over the phone. He decided not to ask further.
Lyra fell asleep and put the encounter out of her mind.
Ruben was a big shot.
Someone like him wouldn't bother with a small-time doctor like her, right?
But Lyra underestimated the situation.
She was called to the director's office urgently. The nurses said there might be a major surgery for her to handle.
On her way there, Lyra's heart was filled with anticipation and excitement, wondering what kind of big surgery it would be.
Until she opened the door.
"Lyra, come in, come in. I never expected this! Lyra, I can't believe you were involved in such a project before. If Dr. Larson hadn't said it himself, I wouldn't have believed it."
Lyra was stunned to see Ruben, who shouldn't have been there.
Ruben looked at her with a faint smile, seemingly enjoying her reaction.
The director found her attitude strange. "Lyra, why are you just standing there? Come over. This is the biggest surgery you've had since you joined the hospital."
Lyra sat down, feeling dazed.
The excitement and anticipation she had felt vanished the moment she saw Ruben.
She didn't believe for a second that Ruben had come specifically to bring her good news.
Ruben and Jeffery were both in Willow Creek. Why would he come all the way to City A to offer a project? It felt like a setup.
But when she saw the project proposal, Lyra's expression changed. "Why this?"
The director was surprised. "Lyra, you really worked on this project?"
"Yeah, but I left halfway through," Lyra said, trying to hide her surprise.
Ruben chuckled softly.
The director assumed they knew each other and, after some thought, decided to take on the project.
"Lyra, Dr. Larson specifically requested you for this project. You have to do well!"
Lyra forced a smile in response to the director's encouragement.
Once outside, even that perfunctory smile disappeared.
Ruben watched her changing expressions and couldn't help but laugh. "Is it really that bad? Jeffery sent you to this place where you don't know anyone."
"And now, I've given you a big project, a hot dog falling from the sky. Shouldn't you thank me?"
"Really? Then thank you," she replied sarcastically.
Ruben smirked. "No wonder Jeffery trained you. You're just like him."
Lyra took a deep breath. "I don't know what you want. I'm no longer involved in the project. And Mr. Gray has been a great mentor to me. Please don't insult him."
Ruben raised an eyebrow.
He was wearing a casual outfit, a gray coat that fit well. If it weren't for his bad attitude and the constant smirk on his face, he might actually be quite likable.
Even so, many nurses were sneaking glances at him.
But Lyra showed clear rejection of his unconscious charm. "If there's nothing else, I'll be going. Dr. Larson, please see yourself out."
With that, she quickly left.
Back in her office, Lyra opened the familiar project documents, her expression complicated.
After all the setbacks, the project had come back to her.
Lyra felt a strange sense of fate.
She steadied herself, deciding not to overthink it, and began reviewing the documents again.
Jeffery had known about the project's restart, but he only learned that Lyra was involved when he arrived in City A.
"Ruben came to see you personally?" He frowned, his expression cold.
Lyra didn't want him to worry, so she downplayed her encounter with Ruben. "I think he's targeting you. Because of our... relationship, he came to me."
After some hesitation, she used the word "relationship."
She waited nervously for Jeffery's reaction, worried he might be displeased.
Fortunately, Jeffery didn't mind. He paused, then said, "I'm sorry for dragging you into this."
For some reason, even though he didn't seem to care, Lyra felt disappointed.
"Don't say that. I owe everything to your guidance. As for others, I'd have trouble with or without you. Besides, I see this as a challenge."
Jeffery understood her meaning. "You want to give it a try?"
Lyra nodded without hesitation. "Yes, it's something I should complete."
