Chapter 356 He Doesn't Dare to Kill Me
Gunshots echoed from behind.
Kevin missed Pearl.
Pearl had her eyes shut tight, heart racing. The bullet zipped past her cheek and hit the woods. When she opened her eyes, she saw Kevin drop everything and dive into the water.
'He didn't shoot to kill me! Or maybe he didn't dare to!'
Still shaken, Pearl gasped and stared at where Kevin had been. The river ended in a waterfall, and anyone falling would be seriously hurt or worse. But Kevin had no choice.
"Pearl!" Oscar caught up, grabbed her arm, and checked her over. "Are you hurt?"
Pearl, pale and tense, shook her head. "I'm fine." But she was still scared. She had gambled that Kevin wouldn't kill her, and she was right. He didn't dare, not because he couldn't, but because it was too risky for him.
She couldn't figure it out but sensed she was a big threat to him. He wanted her gone but was too pressured to do it.
The special forces chased after Kevin, but the boat hadn't moved. They reached the waterfall, saw the fast water, and Kevin was gone.
"Oscar, he got away! But he won't get far this time!"
"Search the city. He won't escape!" Oscar said coldly. He was determined to catch Kevin.
He turned to Pearl, serious. "Why did you come here? It's dangerous! You should've stayed in the car. How dare you talking to Kevin? Are you trying to get killed? Think about me! How worried do you think I am?"
Pearl often acted on impulse. "He didn't dare to kill me!" she said.
"What?" Oscar frowned. "Are you saying a criminal wouldn't kill you?"
"He shot at me but missed. His aim is good, right? He was under pressure; he didn't dare to kill me!"
Oscar saw the shell casings and knew she was right. It surprised him that there was anything Kevin wouldn't dare to do. Kevin could poison Pearl but not shoot her. It didn't add up. But he was relieved Kevin didn't dare, keeping Pearl safe.
Oscar still scolded her. "You were too bold. Even if you wanted to buy time, don't gamble with your life. You got lucky this time, but what about next time? I won't let you do this again!"
Pearl, still shaken, nodded. "I understand." She knew she had been reckless and would be more careful.
"But how did you know Kevin would come out here?" Oscar asked. "The lab is a maze. Everyone gets lost, but you found his escape route fast."
Pearl was puzzled. "I didn't know. It just felt familiar, and I found this place and saw Kevin. It was like my instincts led me here."
Oscar looked at her, amazed. "Do you know the lab's layout?"
