Chapter 299 Playing Along
Isabella's inner strength wasn't cutting it for the lead role pressure.
She could already picture it.
When the show aired, people would definitely criticize her.
"Haley, why don't you take the role instead?" Isabella, once confident, now doubted herself. "If you play it, no one will say anything!"
Haley got mad. "Are you comparing me to Eileen?"
Isabella shrank back. "No, I'm not. I know you're amazing. You could nail the lead role in your first show. You're definitely better than Eileen."
Haley liked that a bit more. She calmed down and asked, "How do you know about Pearl? Did you see them together?"
"That report was from Horizon Network," Isabella said. "Pearl must be involved."
Haley had suspected this but didn't expect Pearl to strike back like this. 'Is she declaring war?'
But how could Pearl have the energy for this now?
Haley couldn't understand why she hadn't heard about Pearl's health issues.
Haley's face darkened. She wanted to have answers ASAP.
There were recent reports of Eileen being hospitalized. She guessed it was the same hospital where Oscar was.
She wanted to see what they were up to.
Meanwhile, Pearl was online, trying to figure things out.
Eileen noticed Pearl's concern and asked, "Does Oscar know what you're doing?"
"I didn't plan to hide it from him," Pearl said softly.
Oscar's opinion didn't matter to Pearl; what she could gain did.
Eileen smiled. "I hope you two don't argue because of me."
Differences in interests could strain a relationship.
"Want to go for a walk?" Pearl asked.
Eileen had been stuck here for a while. She was healthy, and staying in the hospital was uncomfortable.
"I'd like that." Eileen got out of bed.
The sun was nice today, and some sunlight would be good.
They walked side by side.
Eileen's gaze fell on an elderly couple ahead. The husband was in a wheelchair, pushed by his wife, who was struggling to walk herself.
Eileen looked at them and said, "I was raised by my grandparents."
Pearl saw her gaze fixed on the couple. "Really? What about your parents?"
Eileen said, "I don't have parents. My father never came home, and my mother ran off. My grandparents raised me, but now I have no family."
"Your grandparents passed away?" Pearl asked.
"Yes." Eileen smiled, but there was sadness. "As a kid, I lived in a mud house. We had little food, mostly potatoes. I ate so many I can't stand them now. Now that I'm better off, my grandparents are gone."
"When they passed, I was on set and didn't get to see them one last time." Eileen's eyes reddened. "My grandparents didn't have a great relationship. They often argued, and my grandfather even hit my grandmother. Despite growing up in such a family, I couldn't resent them. They were all I had. I had to endure the arguments and poverty."
Pearl suddenly felt sorry for Eileen.
Growing up without parental love must have made her insecure and forced her to endure a lot.
Pearl couldn't help but hold Eileen's arm. "Those days are over. The future will be better. One day, you'll be a top actress."
Eileen smiled. "You have high hopes for me."
"You've been tough since you were a kid. There's nothing you can't achieve."
Eileen started to see Pearl in a better light. Maybe it was because Pearl had given her such encouragement. Even though she had learned to endure, Pearl had reignited her determination to succeed.
'I can't go back to the past. I have to escape poverty and hunger.'
Just then, Haley arrived.
She saw Eileen and Pearl together.
Pearl looked perfectly fine, no signs of weakness.
Haley didn't get it.
But she noticed the cross bracelet on Pearl's wrist and her face changed. She walked over and grabbed Pearl's arm. "Where did you get this bracelet?"
Pearl was chatting with Eileen when she was suddenly grabbed. She turned and saw it was Haley.
She immediately shook off Haley's hand and said coldly, "What do you want?"
Haley asked again, "I asked you, where did you get this cross bracelet? What did you do to get it?"
"Why should I answer you?" Pearl looked at her coldly. "You think you are so important, don't you?"
"This cross bracelet belongs to Jeffery." Haley sneered. "I wondered why he was helping you. So, you two have this kind of connection!"
Pearl began to worry.
'If Haley is connected to the kidnappers, is Jeffery in danger?'
She cautiously said, "What are you talking about? I don't know Jeffery!"
Haley's gaze shifted to her arm, and she smirked. "It doesn't matter whose it is, as long as things don't go smoothly for you!"
"What do you mean?" Pearl had a bad feeling. "If you have something to say, just say it. Don't be so mysterious!"
Haley crossed her arms. She had been uncomfortable, but now she felt much better. Everything was going according to her plan. She said, "You'll find out soon enough. Pearl, I'll take everything from you. Just wait. The final winner will be me!"
Pearl frowned and clenched her fists.
Eileen, standing to the side, remarked, "The game isn't over yet, and you're already jumping to conclusions?"
Haley's gaze shifted to Eileen. "Do you think I'm afraid of you? I can surpass you in resources alone, let alone anything else! Even if you work hard for another ten years, you'll still be beneath me!"
She wasn't afraid of Eileen.
Eileen's anger was provoked, and she clenched her fists tightly. The next second, she directly charged at Haley.
Haley, expecting Eileen to get physical, was ready and pushed Eileen away hard.
Eileen fell to the ground, and her palm immediately started bleeding. "Haley, I have no grudge against you. Why do you dislike me so much?"
This statement immediately drew the attention of bystanders.
They quickly took out their phones to capture the scene.
"It's Haley and Eileen. Did Haley hit Eileen?"
"Looks like it. Haley even chased her to the hospital. Haley isn't as gentle as she appears. She even hits people."
"Hurry up and record it. Haley hit Eileen!"
