She gripped Avery's hand tightly, thinking she must have misheard.

"Pearl, are you okay?" Avery stepped forward to check on her.

"We mostly talked about school, hobbies, nothing special. I just thought you and Haley were still in touch."
Pearl continued, "I didn't have much contact with Haley back then, right?"
Avery thought for a moment. "You only mentioned her once and never brought her up again, so you probably didn't have much contact."
So, Haley must have approached her on purpose.

"I don't remember," Pearl told her. "If we had contact that early, then I think she's a bit scary."

Janetta said, "Then you should think carefully about how much you've suffered over the years!"
Pearl got it.
