Chapter 749 Things Remain the Same, But People Have Changed
Nathaniel moved in closer, so close they could feel each other's breath.
"So, what do you want me to do? Break up with Azalea right now, tell her what we just did, and then drag her to the hospital for an abortion? Would that make you happy?" he snapped.
"Of course not!" Saskia protested, her face going pale. "That's your own child. What are you even saying?"
Azalea wanted a happy family, and Saskia didn't want to ruin everything.
"Then, what are you really thinking?" Nathaniel stood tall, looking down at her. "Go ahead and spill it, Saskia."
"I'll try to make it up to you. Whatever amount of money you want, I'll gather it and give it to you. Then we won't see each other again. You can take care of Azalea, and you can pretend I'm dead. Or I can leave, go abroad, whatever it takes. I promise I won't show up in front of you again to bother you," Saskia said sincerely.
She and Nathaniel could never go back to how they were before. The best solution was for her to disappear, so he and Azalea could live happily.
Nathaniel's frown deepened at her words, and the anger in his eyes grew more intense. After a moment, he laughed bitterly. "You really have some wild ideas. If there were a Nobel Prize for wishful thinking, you'd definitely win."
Hearing this, Saskia lowered her head silently. She knew Nathaniel wouldn't take her words seriously. As the best lawyer in Willow Creek, his earning power was beyond most people's imagination. But the problem was, aside from a little bit of money, she had nothing else to offer.
Nathaniel continued, "I want you to stay by my side. Don't worry; I won't keep you forever, just for four years. After that, our debts will be settled, and you can go wherever you want and find whoever you want."
Saskia felt her heart drop at Nathaniel's cold, emotionless words. If it weren't for Azalea, Saskia would have agreed to four years, or even eight or ten. But Azalea stood between them. By then, Azalea's child would be in kindergarten, but Saskia would still be having an improper relationship with her brother-in-law. Just thinking about it made Saskia feel like she was going to break down.
She asked, "Nathaniel, do you have to destroy me to be satisfied?"
Everything he did and said was pushing her to a dead end.
"If being with me is worse than death for you, then I must have found the best way to get back at you. Today is Azalea's engagement party. As her sister, you should at least smile." Nathaniel wiped her tears away as he spoke, his movements rough, the calluses on his fingers hurting Saskia.
In the past, seeing her cry would have made him feel heartbroken, and he would have wiped her tears gently. How could he be like this now?
As soon as the thought crossed her mind, Saskia reminded herself that George was dead. The person alive now was Nathaniel. Even if Nathaniel presented himself as George, things had changed.Saskia watched as Nathaniel walked into the banquet hall and joined Azalea, while she stood alone in the hallway, unsure if she should go in or not.
"George, what were you talking about with Saskia just now?" Azalea asked, turning to him with bright eyes after greeting the guests.
Today was the first time Saskia met George, and Azalea was a bit nervous. What if Saskia didn't like him?
Nathaniel shook his head and replied, "Just some small talk. I have a question for you. In your heart, what kind of person do you think your sister is?"
"Saskia is the best sister in the world. She's always been so good to me, and all her friends speak highly of her. But there's one thing that's really unfortunate." Azalea sighed as she thought about it.
Nathaniel continued to probe, "Why don't you tell me?"
"Well, since we're going to be family, there's nothing to hide. Saskia had a boyfriend she loved very much, but they broke up. She was heartbroken for a long time because of it." Azalea's expression darkened at the mention of that man.
Saskia never explained why they broke up. But it was clear that Saskia, being so wonderful and deeply in love, was devastated for years after the breakup, unable to move on. At this, Azalea thought that man must have hurt Saskia! Otherwise, they would have been married by now, maybe even expecting their child.
Nathaniel was intrigued by the topic and wanted to ask more, but Azalea didn't know the details. With no more information, he lost interest in asking further.
At that time, Azalea said, "By the way, Saskia's landlord suddenly wants to take back her apartment, and she has nowhere to go. Finding a new place would be a hassle, so I thought she could move in with us. Plus, with me being pregnant, Saskia could help take care of me."
Azalea was initially worried he might not agree. But to her surprise, Nathaniel agreed immediately. "We're family. She can just move in directly."
"You're so good, George." Azalea's eyes softened even more.
This scene deeply pained Saskia. She had finally gathered the courage to walk into the banquet hall, only to see this. Azalea's eyes clearly showed how much she loved Nathaniel. But it was all a trap, a scheme Nathaniel devised to torment the sisters.
Azalea saw Saskia and happily walked over to link arms with her. She said, "I just talked to him, and he agreed for you to move in. We can live together from now on."
Hearing this, Saskia forced a smile.
"I've saved you a seat. Come on, let's go," Azalea said as she led Saskia forward.
Nathaniel stood nearby. As they passed each other, their eyes met, but Saskia lowered her head in embarrassment. She really didn't know how to face Nathaniel now.
Then Nathaniel continued to entertain the guests. There weren't many people at the engagement party, mostly Azalea's family and friends. On his side, only a few close friends showed up, with his cousin, Clarence, being the closest.
"Nathaniel, did you tell your family about your engagement?" Clarence asked, looking worried as soon as he found Nathaniel.
