Chapter 785 Give Her One More Chance
Azalea's heart was a boiling pot of bitterness. She turned slightly, her face dark and twisted. "What if the person bullying me is your mom?" she asked.
Benjamin was stunned for a second but still tried to defend Saskia gently. "Mom wouldn't bully Aunt Azalea," he said.
Azalea let out a cold laugh. Why did Saskia's kid get to live happily, while her own child never even got a chance?
She couldn't accept it. She'd never let Saskia have an easy life.
Benjamin sensed something was off and whimpered, "Where's Mom? I want to see Mom."
Azalea felt a surge of irritation but tried to stay calm. "I was just joking with you. When we get to our destination, I'll let you call your mom," she said.
Benjamin was quickly appeased and happily looked out the window at the passing scenery.
Meanwhile, Saskia had been making calls all morning, worried sick about Azalea. Azalea was always so secretive, carrying burdens alone and never explaining anything.
Saskia felt she had to explain what happened last night. She didn't have much hope when she called, but to her surprise, Azalea answered.
"Azalea, what happened last night wasn't what it seemed," Saskia hurried to explain.
Azalea's voice trembled slightly. "Do you still need to lie to me? Your past with him was a lie, and you're still lying to me now. Why should I believe you?"
Saskia felt a lump in her throat, struggling to respond. "Azalea, I can take Benjamin and leave."
"You've turned my life upside down," Azalea said through gritted teeth. "And now you want to leave? Saskia, I wish you had never appeared."
"What can I do to make it up to you?" Saskia asked, her hands falling limply to her sides.
Azalea lowered her head and handed the phone to Benjamin, who was playing nearby. "I'm talking to your mom," she said.
Benjamin's face lit up as he took the phone. "Mom!" he called out.
Hearing Benjamin's voice, Saskia felt a tight knot form in her stomach. She bit her lip, afraid to say too much to Benjamin, fearing he might get hurt too.
She tried to sound casual. "Benjamin, are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Aunt Azalea has lots of fun things here," Benjamin replied cheerfully.
"That's good. Have fun, and I'll come get you in a few days," Saskia said, holding back her fear.
"But I haven't seen you in days. I miss you," Benjamin said, clinging to her.
"I miss you too, but work has been so busy," Saskia said with a forced smile. "Don't worry. I'll come in a few days."
"Okay," Benjamin replied. He was a sensible child, always understanding Saskia's struggles and being considerate.
Now, not only had Saskia failed to give him a good life, but she also constantly put him in danger. The more Saskia thought about it, the sadder she felt.
Seeing their tender mother-son moment, Azalea snatched the phone away, meeting Benjamin's surprised gaze. "I need to talk to your mom. Go play," she said, heading to an empty balcony."You put on quite a show," Azalea remarked.
Knowing Benjamin was no longer on the line, Saskia clenched her fists so hard her fingertips turned white. "What do you want?" she asked.
"I need you to do something for me," Azalea said, narrowing her eyes.
Saskia was done with the games. She only cared about Benjamin's safety and almost cried as she pleaded, "He's your blood relative. What do you want? Don't use him to threaten me. I'll help you."
Azalea let out a cold laugh. "Saskia, you're such a hypocrite. Without leverage, why would you willingly help me?"
Saskia tried to persuade her further, but Azalea cut her off impatiently. "Enough with the useless talk. Get Nathaniel to meet me."
Saskia's heart raced. "What do you want with him?" she asked.
Azalea sneered. "That's between him and me."
Saskia hesitated. "I haven't been in touch with Nathaniel for a long time. I might not be able to do it."
Azalea's voice was cold and unfeeling. "That's your problem. You want Benjamin to be safe, right?"
Saskia fell silent. Azalea was on the brink of madness. If she didn't get Benjamin back soon, who knew what might happen. No matter what, Saskia had to keep Azalea calm.
"Fine, I'll do it. But I need to see Benjamin and hear his voice every day," Saskia said.
Azalea agreed readily. "No problem. Don't think about calling the police or telling anyone, because that would be the biggest mistake of your life."
Saskia swallowed hard, suppressing her inner tremors. "Okay," she said heavily.
There was a moment of silence. Saskia didn't know what Azalea was thinking, and after a while, she hesitated to speak. "Azalea, I..."
Before she could finish, the line went dead. Azalea had hung up. Staring at the disconnected call, Saskia felt a cloud of gloom.
Her fingers hovered over the phone screen, unable to muster the courage to call Nathaniel. However, for Benjamin's sake, she had to do it, no matter how difficult.
When she finally dialed the number, she closed her eyes, resigned. The call connected.
Nathaniel answered but didn't speak.
Saskia had to take the initiative. "Nathaniel."
A faint response came from the other end. Saskia took a deep breath, gathering her courage. "You've been asking about what happened back then, right?"
Nathaniel's tone lifted slightly. "You're finally willing to talk?"
"There's nothing left to hide," Saskia said with a bitter smile. "Do you have time? Let's meet and talk."
Nathaniel wouldn't pass up this opportunity. In this game, he didn't want to lose a moment. He deliberately said, "Saskia, why should I waste my time on such trivial matters?"
"Nathaniel, maybe knowing the truth will help you move on. I'll be at Tranquil Time Café all day." With that, Saskia hung up.
She knew Nathaniel well enough to be sure he would come.
After hanging up, Nathaniel tossed his phone aside, letting out a cold laugh. He murmured, "What game are you playing now?"
He didn't want to go, but he couldn't focus on the documents on his computer screen. Rubbing his head, he decided to give Saskia one more chance.
