Chapter 479 I Want to Hear the Truth
Hathaway was Oscar's mom.
Given Oscar's situation and the fact that Pearl was the love of his life—even though she was technically his ex-wife—Hathaway's request to talk to Pearl couldn't be ignored. Nicholas had to hand the phone to Pearl.
"Pearl! Why wasn't it you who died?" Hathaway blurted out as soon as Pearl answered.
Even though Pearl wasn't face-to-face with Hathaway, she could picture her angry expression.
Pearl replied coldly, "Oscar's death was an accident. Don't blame me for everything. Besides, you know his situation better than I do."
"Pearl, I won't let you off. Just wait!" Hathaway threatened.
Oscar had died with Pearl by his side. Haley's death was also linked to Pearl. If Pearl hadn't intervened, Oscar would have married Haley.
Pearl smirked. "Do whatever you want. I'm ready," she said, then hung up. She wasn't scared at all.
Nicholas, standing next to Pearl, was shocked by her attitude. He had thought she and Hathaway were on good terms, but clearly, they weren't.
Nicholas felt regret and thought of Oscar's stern face. If Oscar were here, he'd definitely scold him.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Harris. I didn't know the full story before giving you the phone," Nicholas said, looking down like a kid who'd messed up.
He was Oscar's soldier but also respected Pearl because Oscar had instructed him to. If Pearl wanted to go back to Willow Creek, he'd ensure her safe return. If she wanted to stay with the Eldorians, he'd keep her safe there.
Pearl smiled. "It's okay. Go ahead with your work. If I need anything, I'll let you know. I'm safe here in the camp."
"Yes," Nicholas replied.
Pearl left the tent and saw Adrian setting up a tent nearby. He was tanned but looked determined.
Adrian was in camouflage, blending into the camp. But Barbara had regained her memory, so why hadn't Adrian?
Pearl took a deep breath and walked over to Adrian. He greeted her first.
Pearl smiled. "Are you hurt?"
Adrian shook his head. Since losing his memory, he spoke less, usually just a word or two.
"Once you're better, you should go back to Willow Creek. It's too dangerous here," Adrian said hoarsely but with determination.
Pearl chuckled. "I have a plan."
Tomorrow, she'd take a gun, call Barbara, and bring a few people to search along the riverbank. She trusted her instincts—Oscar wasn't dead.
Adrian said, "Good to know. I'll get back to work."
"Aren't you going to let your family know you're safe? I can get their contact info for you," Pearl suggested, looking at Adrian with some hope.
Adrian paused, then softly replied, "They think I'm dead. If I don't tell them, they'll keep grieving. If I do, they'll worry more. Plus, I haven't got my memory back yet."
Without his memory, he didn't know how to reconnect with his family. He felt empty and wanted to do something meaningful here.
Maybe with time, he'd regain his memory and go home. But around Pearl, he always felt a strange tightness in his chest.
"I respect your decision. But you said it's dangerous here. Aren't you scared?" Pearl frowned.
Adrian chuckled. "Everyone dies. If you're lost, it's better to keep yourself busy."
"Alright," Pearl said, understanding.
Later, she and Barbara searched the riverbank for Oscar. Despite the hardship, they found no trace of him.
After days of searching, Pearl gave up.
Holding Barbara's hand, she asked, "Barbara, I can't find him. Since you know that child isn't dead, did you hear Oscar call anyone or mention any place often?"
Barbara shook her head. "I don't know. Maybe Mr. Brown contacted his family and gave the child to them?"
But Hathaway wouldn't raise Oscar's child, and Alfonso was even less likely.
Pearl decided to call Elijah, Nicholas, and Jeffery together. She shared what Barbara had told her and watched their reactions.
Elijah and Nicholas were stunned. "Ms. Harris, is it true your and Mr. Brown's child isn't dead?"
Jeffery said nothing, which worried Pearl the most. She looked him in the eye and said coldly, "Jeffery, do you know something? Don't lie to me. I want the truth."
Jeffery pursed his lips and, after a few seconds, said, "Pearl, if Oscar arranged something for the child, only he would know."
Jeffery's expression was emotionless. He wasn't lying, but his earlier reaction was suspicious. Barbara had the best relationship with Jeffery. If she knew the child wasn't dead, how could Jeffery not know? Plus, Jeffery was here because Oscar had called him. Elijah and Nicholas only knew about military matters, so it made sense they were unaware.
Pearl felt she needed to question Jeffery further.
"You guys go ahead with your work," she told Elijah and Nicholas, keeping Jeffery behind.
