Chapter 693 Confession
Pearl wasn't planning on having dinner together right now.
The organization's issues were still unresolved. If she went to see Desiree and Harold, it might just put them on the organization's radar, which would be more harmful than helpful.
"I'll hit up Harold when we get back. There's a project at the company I want to team up with him on," Oscar said, wanting to help Harold and trusting his work ethic.
No matter the size of the project, Harold would tackle it with dedication.
"Forget it, just focus on driving. I'll text Desiree directly. They might be busy right now," Pearl said, pulling out her phone and sending a cute emoji to Desiree.
Desiree didn't reply, and Pearl decided not to bug her further.
Soon, they pulled up in front of their house. Pearl grabbed the KFC and headed inside. As soon as she walked in, Christopher ran over.
He didn't even notice what she was holding and hugged her tight. "Mom, why'd you come back so late? I was so scared. I thought something happened to you!"
"I'm fine. There were just a lot of people buying KFC, so I had to wait a bit longer," Pearl said, exchanging a glance with Oscar and telling a little white lie.
They didn't want Christopher to worry.
Christopher let out a big sigh like a grown-up. "That's a relief. But Mom, if it happens again, just come home. It's okay if we don't get KFC."
There were plenty of snacks at home, and their meals were always plentiful. He didn't need a burger.
"Got it, Christopher, you're so understanding," Pearl said, picking him up and spinning him around.
Christopher held onto her shoulders tightly, his feet lifting off the ground, spinning in the air. He thought it was a blast.
While Pearl was with Christopher, Oscar went to Emily, picked her up from the cradle, and gently patted her side.
When Emily was first born, he didn't know her favorite position and often woke her up while holding her.
But practice makes perfect. After holding her many times, he got the hang of it. Emily was deep in her dreams, even blowing a little spit bubble, which made him chuckle.
He wished he had a camera to capture her adorable moment.
"Emily, I want to see Emily too!" Christopher said, running over to Oscar after getting down from Pearl's arms.
He deliberately lightened his steps and spoke softly, "Dad, I want to hold Emily too."
"Okay, be careful." Oscar then gently placed Emily in Christopher's hands.
He kept his hands under Emily, ready to catch her in case of any accidents.
Even though Christopher was young, he was good at taking care of babies. Plus, they were siblings, and Emily naturally liked him, sleeping even more soundly in his arms.
He gazed at Emily for a bit before handing her back to Oscar. "I wish Emily could grow up faster so I could share my KFC with her."
"Christopher, you're awesome, a good kid who knows how to share," Pearl praised him.
As parents, they just wanted their kids to get along and support each other.
After all, besides their parents, they were the closest to each other.
Oscar carried Emily around the living room for a bit before putting her back in the cradle and handing her to Calliope.
Dinner was ready, and the three of them headed to the dining room, ending the meal with laughter and joy.
After dinner, Christopher went to watch cartoons, and Pearl, with nothing else to do, picked up her phone.
Then she saw Desiree's reply: [Harold and I have a court date next Monday. We're getting divorced.]
Pearl couldn't believe her eyes.
Their relationship seemed so solid, and Desiree had recently shared the good news of her pregnancy. How could they be getting divorced now?
She even suspected Desiree's account was hacked or that it was some kind of prank.
Pearl: [Are you joking? This isn't funny. Divorce is not something to joke about.]
[No. I'm serious about the divorce. No one can change my mind.] Desiree replied, holding her phone, feeling overwhelmed.
If she talked to Liam or Tessa, they would subtly praise Daryl, implying she should find a boyfriend and forget about the hurt Harold caused.
And she couldn't bring herself to talk to other friends.
So, after much thought, she decided to confide in Pearl, who had two kids and could empathize with her.
[If you're available, how about a video call?] Pearl wanted to know what was going on. She then took her phone to the bedroom, closed the door, and initiated a video call.
Soon, Desiree's face appeared on the screen.
She looked much more haggard and thinner than the last time they met. Just one look made Pearl's heart ache. "What's going on? Did you two have a fight?"
That shouldn't be the case!
They were married. Even if they had a big argument, they could make up by compromising a bit.
Desiree looked so worn out. How could Harold be indifferent to her condition?
"I wish it was just a fight. We could make up after a fight. But we're done. Once we get the divorce decree on Monday, we'll have no ties left," Desiree said, using all her strength to get the words out.
The withdrawal from this relationship was severe. She often thought she had moved on, but the pain would resurface in the quiet of the night.
"Desiree, we're good friends, and you've helped me a lot. If you trust me, tell me what's going on. Maybe I can help," Pearl said, not daring to advise without knowing the details.
Desiree, seizing the rare opportunity to vent, told her everything, including Ember's repeated troubles and the child.
In the end, she even stood up to show Pearl her belly.
