Chapter 76 He Was Not Someone She Could Control

He was behaving as she wished, she should feel very happy now.

Pearl pursed her lips and remained silent.

Seeing their displeased expressions, Seraphina wanted to ease the tension at the moment, so she said, "Ms. Harris, why don't you stay and have a meal with me?"

"I'm telling you, the dishes cooked here are really delicious. Whatever you want to eat, she can make it. She's really amazing! You must try the food she makes!" Seraphina introduced enthusiastically.

Pearl's gaze shifted to Seraphina and she said, "No, I..."

"Yes," Seraphina interjected, then looked at Oscar as if implying something. "President Oscar, I want Ms. Harris to stay and have a meal with me, is that okay? I've been here for so long and no one has accompanied me for a meal, I feel lonely."

Oscar glanced at Pearl and said calmly, "Do as you wish."

Satisfied with the answer, Seraphina tried even harder to persuade Pearl, "See, even President Oscar has agreed. Stay here."

She was afraid that Pearl would feel hesitant because Oscar was here.

"Okay." Pearl didn't refuse anymore, but agreed to have a meal with her.

This quiet place suddenly became lively. "I'm so happy!" Seraphina said with a smile.

Oscar glanced at Pearl and said distantly, "Secretary Pearl, are you going to keep standing here?" Sensing his displeasure, Pearl pursed her lips and understood what she should do.

"I'll go to the kitchen to help." Seraphina didn't mean that.

"No, Ms. Harris is a guest, she shouldn't go to the kitchen. She can stay here with me…"
Pearl said, "I'll still go to the kitchen, you guys can chat."

She insisted on going to the kitchen, with a hint of defiance and stubbornness, and disappeared in front of them. Seraphina wanted to say something, but seeing Pearl leaving without hesitation, she could only sigh. She didn’t want to treat Pearl as a maid.

She turned around and asked in confusion, "President Oscar, she is your secretary. Why do you treat her like a maid?"

Oscar's face turned extremely cold, and his eyes became sharp as he met Seraphina's gaze. At this moment, his icy aura made her stiff. Did she say something wrong?

She couldn't help but clench her fist to ease the pressure, only to hear him coldly say, "Ms. Brooks, if you're smart, you shouldn't say things you shouldn't say."

They were just having a good conversation a moment ago, but he became displeased as soon as Pearl arrived.

Seraphina felt the danger. She seemed to have said too much. Oscar's temperament was unpredictable, and if she angered him, he would treat her mercilessly. Seraphina understood his boundaries and no longer acted so recklessly.

She wisely said, "I'm sorry, President Oscar. I shouldn't have asked those things."

Oscar didn't respond to her, his expression distant and cold. He glanced at the kitchen, and left the living room.

Seraphina watched his figure, still clinging to him. He had saved her like a god, making her yearn for him. In the future, as long as she wanted to understand him better, she wouldn't make mistakes. She would let him know that she was obedient and would please him. She smiled, looking forward to the days to come.

Pearl was in the kitchen. Rather than saying she was accompanying Seraphina, it was more accurate to say she was accompanying them. Oscar seemed to have no intention of leaving.

Pearl expected this, intentionally staying here to find an opportunity to explain to him. Seraphina was no longer as cautious of Oscar as she was at the beginning. On the contrary, she was still very enthusiastic towards him.

Perhaps it was because Oscar had given her a place to live, making her believe that he was truly the kindest person to her, so she became closer to him.

"Ms. Harris," Seraphina suddenly called out to Pearl from behind. Pearl didn't turn around, washing the vegetables in her hands.

"How many years have you worked for President Oscar?" Seraphina asked curiously.

Pearl paused for a moment. "Why do you want to know this?"

"I want to know how long you've been working by President Oscar's side, if you really understand him." Pearl glanced back at her.

Seraphina smiled, her eyes filled with admiration. Pearl knew that was a look of longing, that Seraphina wanted to know everything about Oscar.

Seraphina also wanted to become the person who knew Oscar the best. "A little bit," Pearl said lightly. "What do you want to know about him from me?"

Seraphina did not hide anything and confessed to Pearl, "I want to know everything about him. If I understand him better, maybe I won't make him unhappy."

Pearl asked again, "You want to understand him, make him happy, and make him satisfied with everything about you. Do you think he will like you more this way?"

Seraphina blushed shyly and said, "If you can tell that I like him, can't President Oscar also see that I like him a little bit?"

Pearl remained silent. Seraphina, on the other hand, didn't hide her intention.

"No, if he knows that I like him and trying to please him, then I would appear cheap," Seraphina pondered. She wanted to become the best person in Oscar's heart. "I don't have a background, yet he don't mind. I am already content being in the same space as him. If I want too much, then I am being greedy. I am satisfied with just being able to catch a few more glimpses of him."

But even so, this was not her ultimate goal.

She looked at Pearl, seeking for an answer. "Ms. Harris, if I go to college, study hard, and become successful, disregarding my family background, would I be deserving of him?"

Her idea was bold, reminding Pearl of herself.

In a way, she was similar to Seraphina.

From her, Pearl saw her own shadow from the past, how she had worked hard to follow someone.

She did not have a biased perspective on Seraphina. She asked, "Why do you like President Oscar?"

Seraphina replied, "He is good to me, he allowed me to live in a big house. Although he appears cold, he cares about me, takes me to the hospital, and keeps me company. He is different from other men.

"He has no ulterior motive toward me."

Pearl thought about calling Seraphina naive, but she knew better than to crush her hopes.

However, if Pearl wanted to say that Seraphina was not naive, she would be moved by a small favor.

"It's best if you don't have such thoughts," Pearl disregarded those little thoughts, warning Seraphina based on her own experience. "The better he treats you, the more you think he is different. You're wrong. He only helped you casually, and though you remember it in your heart, he probably never cared about it. He is not someone you can control."

Pearl addressed both Seraphina and herself.

Seraphina was filled with joy, but her thoughts were negated by Pearl in this way.

She thought Oscar treated her very well.

No man had ever been this good to her before.

But she also felt disappointed and lacked confidence because of Pearl's words.

Pearl didn't say much, fearing that speaking too much might displeased Seraphina. She knew of the appropriate amount to say.

Seraphina did not inquire further. Her enthusiasm was extinguished, so she lost interest in chatting with Pearl, and left the kitchen feeling dejected.

Pearl made dessert.
