Chapter 659 The Child is Gone

"I'm Harold's mom. Is Desiree home?" Ember peeked over Natalia's shoulder.

Natalia was caught off guard, quickly wiped her hands, and looked a bit uneasy. Harold's mom had never shown up here before.

Desiree was actually home today, skipping work. Hearing the commotion, she came out and was just as surprised to see Ember at the door. "Mrs. Lewis? Oh, Natalia, let her in, quick!"

She rushed inside to tidy up. They didn't get many visitors, so it took a bit to find the tea leaves.

Desiree, being young and all, had no clue how to make tea. After fumbling around for a while, she still couldn't get it right. The tea she ended up with barely looked like tea.

"Mrs. Lewis, please have some tea," she said, handing over the cup carefully.

Ember glanced at it, hiding her disdain. Both she and Wesley were teachers, and Wesley was a tea aficionado. She could tell right away how bad Desiree's tea was.

She subtly pushed the cup away. "No need to be so formal. I mainly came to see you. By the way, have you eaten yet?"

Seeing Desiree shake her head, Ember got up, ready to head to the kitchen to cook.

Desiree quickly tried to stop her, with Natalia jumping in to help. After a bit of back and forth, they finally managed to keep Ember out of the kitchen.

Ember, a bit miffed, joked with a smile, "These days, it's hard to even cook a meal, but it's okay, there'll be other chances."

She then sat and chatted with Desiree for a while. By the time she left, it was already evening.

While cleaning up, Natalia said, "Mrs. Lewis, I think Mr. Lewis's mom was pretty easy to talk to. I think you're really lucky, and you'll definitely be very happy in the future!"

"Thanks for the kind words," Desiree smiled faintly, feeling a bit hopeful herself. Maybe Ember had really changed.

When Harold got back, Desiree told him about it. Harold was surprised by Ember's change and happy to hear it.

Meanwhile, when Ember got home late, Wesley asked, "Where were you today?"

Taking off her shoes at the entrance, Ember said, "I went to see Desiree."

"Didn't you dislike her? Why now..." Wesley asked.

"She's pregnant," Ember said with a stern face.

Wesley's cup slipped from his hand, crashing to the floor. He was so shocked he couldn't speak. After a moment, he finally found his voice. "What? When did this happen? Why didn't you tell me?"

Seeing his reaction, she was reminded of how she felt when she first found out. Ember sneered, "I just found out not long ago."

They sat down together, both worried. They'd always had issues with Desiree, but now she was pregnant. No matter what, that was the Lewis family's bloodline.

Wesley was deeply troubled and couldn't think of a solution, so he asked Ember, "What are you planning to do?"

"What can I do? Harold went and got someone pregnant without a word. What do you think I can do?" Ember replied.

Wesley was speechless. For a long time, neither of them spoke. Ember lowered her head, already set on her decision, 'No way this kid is staying.'

The next day, she showed up at Desiree's place again, this time with a thermos in hand.

She handed it over, looking serious. "Desiree, take this. It's good stuff. Got it from an old classmate. It's water infused with Rhodiola rosea. Super nourishing. My friend said it's especially good for pregnant women like you."

"Rhodiola rosea?" Desiree frowned. She'd heard of it but never knew it was good for pregnant women.

But Ember was so enthusiastic, practically pushing her to drink it. Unable to refuse, Desiree obediently drank it.

Seeing her finish the whole bottle, Ember finally relaxed and chatted with her for a bit.

Desiree had been extra sleepy since getting pregnant, needing a nap around three or four in the afternoon, so Ember didn't stay long.

After Ember left, Desiree went to her bedroom for her usual nap.

She was sleeping soundly, but halfway through, she felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen, getting worse and worse, forcing her to wake up abruptly.

When she opened her eyes, she was horrified to see a large red stain on the bedsheet beneath her.

Panicked, she called out hoarsely, "Someone, Natalia, it hurts so much, come quickly."

As the door opened, she blacked out.

Before losing consciousness, she felt herself fall into a broad embrace, a cool scent enveloping her tightly.

She didn't know how much time had passed when she opened her eyes again, seeing a white ceiling and smelling the pungent scent of medical alcohol.

She moved slightly, immediately waking the person sleeping beside her.

Harold quickly leaned over to help her up, his eyes bloodshot, clearly having not rested well for a long time.

"Desiree, you're awake. How do you feel?" He held her hand and asked.

Desiree, just waking up, still looked a bit confused. "Is this a hospital? Why am I here?"

It was a very ordinary question. Anyone waking up to find themselves in a hospital would wonder the same.

Moreover, she didn't feel any discomfort in her body.

Her question seemed to stump Harold. His eyelashes fluttered, his eyes darkened, and he avoided her gaze. "You just woke up, your body must still be uncomfortable. Rest more, don't ask about anything else."

"Wait, Harold, are you hiding something from me? I remember my stomach hurt a lot before I passed out. Why don't I feel anything now?" Desiree murmured.

A suspicion arose in her heart, causing it to sink.

Her fingers trembled, and she wanted to touch her lower abdomen but afraid of the answer, stopping mid-air. "My child is still there, isn't it?"

Harold trembled, a look of pain flashing in his eyes.

In an instant, it was as if a merciless blade had fallen, cutting Desiree open, filling her with bone-chilling cold.

She grabbed Harold, demanding. "Answer me, Harold, tell me the child is still there!" She stared at him intently.

She was like a child unwilling to face the truth, stubborn and insistent, only wanting to hear that one answer.

But Harold's response was a hug. "I'm sorry, Desiree, it's all my fault."
