Chapter 864 Willing to Try?
Jade nodded. "Alright."
Luckily, the wound wasn't too deep. As long as she kept changing the bandages, she'd be fine.
When she got home and saw Benjamin playing around, she felt like she could recover even faster.
Nathaniel came back looking exhausted, but he still managed a smile. "Saskia, can you come to the study? I need to talk to you about something."
Saskia put down what she was holding. "Sure."
Once they were in the study, Nathaniel pulled a document out of his briefcase and placed it in front of her. "Take a look at this."
Saskia quickly scanned it. "What's this about?"
"You've probably heard of it. It's a legal debate competition show. Winning the gold medal can really boost your reputation in the industry," Nathaniel said seriously.
"Yeah, I've heard of it," Saskia nodded. "And I know the entry standards are pretty high. I used to watch this show all the time."
After her dream was shattered, she never stopped thinking about becoming a lawyer. But years of hard work and exhaustion had made her dream seem distant and unclear.
Looking at the document in front of her, a wave of mixed emotions surged in her heart—both excitement and anxiety.
Nathaniel sat quietly across from her. "Now the opportunity is here. Do you want to give it a shot?"
"But I remember that entering this show has high standards. I... I..." Saskia sighed. "It must be that your firm received an invitation. If I participate, won't others be resentful?"
"Of course not," Nathaniel assured her. "It won't affect anyone. There's still some time to prepare before the competition. If you're willing, I'll submit your name."
"Alright," Saskia nodded.
She had never given up studying law over the years, so picking it back up wouldn't be too difficult.
Saskia smiled slightly, her gratitude evident.
With the possibility of returning to her beloved profession, she was full of energy these days, often studying late into the night. Sometimes, Nathaniel would bring her a cup of warm milk, shaking his head and sighing, "I don't know if signing you up was a good idea or not."
"Of course, it was a good idea," Saskia looked up, smiling brightly.
"You study so much you don't even know if it's day or night," Nathaniel added softly, "You don't even spend time with me."
"There will be plenty of time for that later, but this competition is a one-time opportunity," Saskia said playfully.
Nathaniel had no choice. After all, he was the one who brought it up. Seeing her so passionate, he couldn't say much. He left the warm milk and walked away.
Before the competition, they were invited to a press conference to promote the show and the competition.
Looking around, most of the participants were well-known lawyers. It seemed the competition was not only formal but also attracted serious contenders.
As Saskia walked in, a few reporters turned their cameras toward her. After taking some shots, they asked, puzzled, "Who is she? Never seen her before."
Everyone, not wanting to seem clueless, started searching online for information. But no matter how much they searched, they found nothing. It seemed she was an unknown lawyer.
Saskia felt a bit nervous but still greeted everyone graciously.
Nathaniel's assistant approached her. "Ms. Fuller, come and have a seat. Lawyer Egan asked me to accompany you. If you have any questions, just let me know."
Saskia felt a surge of excitement and nodded slightly.
More and more people gathered.
A lawyer glanced at the nameplate in front of Saskia and sneered, "The Egan family's law firm must be desperate, bringing in just anyone."
Saskia frowned. She knew her background and status might not be well-regarded in this circle, but she wasn't going to let this person's disdain make her feel inferior.
She looked directly at the lawyer and responded with a smile, "Everyone has their starting point. What's important is how far we can go, right?"
The lawyer was taken aback by Saskia's calm demeanor and determined gaze. He then laughed, seemingly finding her naivety amusing.
"Looks like the grand prize might go elsewhere this year."
"Not necessarily," a few other lawyers chimed in.
"You guys..." the male lawyer frowned.
"Long time no see, Jagger," the leading lawyer extended his hand for a handshake.
Jagger's eyes darted between the two groups, quickly understanding the situation, and he laughed.
"So, the Egan family invested heavily this year, hosting the event and entering two teams to increase their chances of winning. Spending big to boost their odds, but giving the opportunity to an unknown lawyer. Lawyer Egan sure is bold."
"You're too kind. Lawyer Egan has his reasons," the leading lawyer said with a smile.
"Really? I don't get it. Indigo, you must be thrilled your boss is hosting this year, but giving a good opportunity to someone else?" Jagger said, then laughed and waved his hand. "Just kidding, forget I said anything."
Indigo smiled. "Our boss has his considerations. If you want, you can do the same."
Seeing that he gained nothing, Jagger laughed a couple of times and left with his team.
Saskia took a deep breath. "Thank you, Indigo."
Indigo glanced at her, still looking indifferent. "I didn't say that to help you. I did it for our firm. I don't know what Lawyer Egan was thinking, letting an outsider join this competition."
"I'm not an outsider, I..." Saskia suddenly remembered her past and couldn't continue.
She had dropped out of college halfway through, never earning her degree. To these renowned lawyers, she was indeed an outsider.
But Saskia knew she was far from being as experienced as these seasoned lawyers.
The press conference began, and Saskia sat in the guest seat. The host started introducing the participating lawyers. When it was Saskia's turn, she stood up and smiled at the audience.
The audience responded with boos.
"Who knows where she came from."
Saskia heard the audience's comments but didn't feel uneasy.
She knew the challenge ahead wasn't just the competition but proving herself and ensuring her firm wasn't ridiculed.
