Chapter 719 Exposed

But Harold wasn't catching any Z's at this hour. He'd already gotten his hands on the investigation files and was flipping through them under the desk lamp.

By the end, he was at a loss for words. The surgery was a sham, but the illness was legit. Ember was in the early stages of lung cancer, and her heart wasn't doing so hot either. With both issues, it was gonna be tough to treat her.

In this mess, she wasn't thinking about surgery but was instead constantly nagging him to ditch Desiree.

He needed to talk to Ember about this tomorrow. Just as Harold was about to hit the sack, he checked his phone for the time and saw a spicy text from Daryl.

At that moment, Harold felt like his blood turned to ice. Daryl was gonna marry Desiree? It was already trending, so it had to be true. But he didn't know if it was Desiree's choice or if Liam and Tessa were behind it.

Harold figured it had to be Desiree's call. Her parents were so cool and always respected her wishes. If Desiree didn't want it, no way they'd force her into marriage.

This kind of drama only ever happened to Harold.

He couldn't stand the thought of losing Desiree, but he also didn't want to mess up her marriage. It seemed like they were meant to be apart. He needed to learn to let go and stop being so stubborn.

Before crashing, Harold wrote an email to Desiree. At the end, he wrote: [I can never forget that night at the bar, you holding my neck and calling my name. Desiree, if you really hate me, just delete this email. I won't bother you anymore. But whenever you want to find me, I'll be here.]

Harold knew Desiree never checked her email. By the time she saw it, a lot of time would have passed. Or maybe, she'd never see it at all.

The next morning, Desiree came downstairs for breakfast.

She'd just taken a bite of her sandwich when she overheard a conversation at the next table. "Did you hear the Fields Family is gonna marry into the Sandvik Family?"

"Nope, I don't keep up with that stuff."

"They're not celebs, just heirs to rich families. I don't really follow it either, just some gossip. Harold is super hot. Do you think if I applied to his company, I could have a steamy office romance?"

Desiree tuned out the rest. But she had a ton of questions. What did they mean by the Fields Family marrying into the Sandvik Family? Her parents only had her, so the bride had to be her. Her parents wouldn't be that crazy!

No way, she had to get to the bottom of this.

Desiree didn't call but sent a text: [You didn't secretly set up an engagement for me, did you?]

[Of course not. We were gonna ask you about this engagement. It suddenly became a trending topic, saying you two are in love. Can you call us now?] Tessa replied, just as confused.

They couldn't handle this alone, so they wanted Desiree's take first.

Desiree put her breakfast aside, went upstairs to her room, and called them directly. She had just found out about this marriage, and Liam and Tessa had seen it on Twitter early in the morning. It was supposed to be a happy event for the Sandvik Family, but none of the people involved knew about it.

"Which gossip account is spreading this nonsense? It's so outrageous. How can people just make things up?" Tessa was furious.

When she found this gossip account, she would definitely sue them and make them pay. This was fabricating stories.

"It probably wasn't the gossip account. They just fanned the flames. I think I know who did this." Desiree already had someone in mind.

Who else could it be?

Liam hurriedly asked, "Who is it? Tell me, and I'll deal with him. This is infuriating!"

"Daryl," Desiree said.

The other end of the line went silent. Liam and Tessa looked at each other, seeing disbelief in each other's eyes.

Daryl had such a good character. He genuinely loved Desiree, and treated Liam and Tessa like parents. How could he do something like this behind their backs?

Desiree guessed that Liam and Tessa wouldn't believe her, so she continued to analyze. "He really wants to marry me. He knocked on my door for a long time, disturbing the neighbors. After I refused, he went to you. Now that you've also refused, I feel he's very extreme and could do anything."

"But Desiree, we don't have any evidence right now. If we accuse him without proof, it wouldn't be fair to him," Tessa said hesitantly.

She really didn't want to think badly of Daryl. If he really did this, it would mean he had been pretending all along. They were satisfied with a facade. And she had even wanted to introduce such a man to Desiree!

Finally, Liam made the decision. He said, "Alright, you continue to enjoy yourself out there. We'll look into this and figure out what's going on. If it really was Daryl, he won't be welcome in our home anymore."

"I'll book a flight back. You've been worrying about me all the time. Even if I stay out, I won't be in the mood to enjoy myself." Desiree didn't want to put all the pressure on Liam and Tessa. They were already busy with the company, and now they had to worry about her.

She continued, "How about this, I said before I wanted to intern at the company. Now you investigate this matter and take down the trending topic online, and I'll come back to help at the company."

Liam and Tessa didn't object. Desiree would eventually inherit the company. She would have to start her training as a successor sooner or later, and the sooner, the better.

"I want to make you a manager right away, but I'm afraid you won't do well. The company has so many employees, and they might not respect you," Liam said, sounding a bit worried.

Desiree laughed and said, "I have to start from the bottom. Just give me the most ordinary position. Anyway, I'll book my flight now."

While she was on her way home, Harold was holding the test report and trying to persuade Ember.

"I know my body. I've already had one surgery. There's no reason to have a second one," Ember insisted, refusing to even look at the report.

In her mind, she believed she was still healthy and had no illnesses.

Harold exposed her lie directly. "You didn't have surgery at all. You just had Dr. Cooley pretend to deceive me!"
