Chapter 224 No One Stays on Top Forever

When Pearl woke up, the room was empty. Her eyes were a bit moist.

She remembered the fight with Oscar last night and noticed the empty space next to her. Clearly, no one had slept there.

Looked like Oscar had left yesterday.

Pearl got up and rushed to check the wardrobe. His clothes were still there, meaning he wasn't done with her yet.

Her spirits, which had briefly lifted, sank again.

She took a shower and got ready for work.

At the TV station, she heard Chloe yelling, "Don't block my way! Is your job more important than mine?"

Chloe seemed extra explosive today.

"Chloe, what's up with you? Even if you're in a bad mood, you can't take it out on others," a colleague snapped back.

Chloe was always like this; when she was in a bad mood, she picked on everyone. She turned to Ruby and said, "I'm not upset; you're just in my way. My exclusive interview is super important. Do you think you can afford to delay it?"

"Everyone knows your interview with Oscar isn't confirmed. If it was, you wouldn't be here throwing a fit; you'd be bragging to the whole station."

Chloe's brows furrowed, and she got even angrier, her voice rising. "It isn't confirmed yet doesn't mean I won't get it. And you? Can you handle it? If not, it's still my job. So what are you even talking about?"

Ruby had no comeback but felt deeply frustrated. Chloe was indeed a valuable asset to the station, as she often reminded everyone, handling many important tasks effectively.

Pearl walked in just as Ruby and Chloe's argument hit its peak. The others stayed quiet, still somewhat intimidated by Chloe.

"What's going on here? Why are you arguing? Do you still want to work?" Harper, noticing the quarrel, spoke sternly.

Chloe turned to Harper and began to complain, "Harper, I went to see Oscar, running around all day just to meet him. And she mocks me, gloating behind my back. If I don't get the interview, she'll probably be thrilled. What about my efforts and hard work? Even if there's no credit, there's still hard work."

Harper knew Chloe well; she was competitive and always wanted to be the best. But Chloe's performance had always been commendable.

Chloe's presence had its pros and cons, but the benefits outweighed the drawbacks, at least providing a role model for others to strive towards.

"Ruby, have you finished your work for today? If not, go and do it instead of gossiping!" Harper reprimanded.

"Yes, Harper," Ruby replied, feeling wronged but unable to do anything more.

Chloe, however, shot Ruby a triumphant glance, a cold smile playing on her lips.

Chloe knew Harper would stand by her side because she was one of the station's top employees.

As long as Chloe was there, she held the most authority in the department next to Harper.

Harper looked at Chloe and added, "Chloe, it's going to be tough for you lately, but you must do this job well!"

Harper's words brooked no argument. Though she favored Chloe, she needed to see results; otherwise, she wouldn't continue to support her.

"Don't worry. I will," Chloe promised.

Harper then noticed Pearl and asked, "Pearl, how's that thing you were working on?"

Pearl walked over and said, "I've finished the article and plan to publish it today."

"Good," Harper replied. "It's a minor piece, but it still needs to be done well. Check on it when you have time."

"Got it," Pearl nodded.

Chloe shot Pearl a look, still fuming, but she needed Pearl's help for the Oscar interview. Securing it was her chance to regain some dignity.

After Harper left, Chloe approached Pearl's desk, her tone softer. "Pearl, what do you think about what I mentioned yesterday?"

"I think I told you yesterday," Pearl said without looking up.

Chloe was about to lose her temper but held back. If no one showed her a friendly face, she wouldn't show kindness either.

Pearl was different; once Chloe completed this project, she intended to teach Pearl a lesson.

Chloe continued, "How about this: you come with me. If we get the interview with Oscar, we can share the credit. You don't want to be stuck writing Instagram posts forever, do you? Everyone wants to climb higher. I'm giving you this opportunity. Follow me, and I guarantee you can reach my position within a year!"

Pearl just smiled.

The workplace was brutal.

Words without proof were just empty promises.

Pearl looked up. "I've already handed this project over to you. Why would I go with you for the interview? Have you thought about that?"

Chloe's patience snapped. "Stop pretending to be so noble. This project was something I fought for!"

She couldn't stand anyone saying it was handed over.

Only by fighting for it could she prove her worth.

"Think whatever you want. I'm not going to the interview. I'm not one of those young girls who follow you around, easily coaxed!" Pearl finished organizing her documents. "I came from the Brown Group, so I've seen it all. Didn't you say everything is about fighting for yourself? Prove your worth this time too."

Pearl refused Chloe again. Chloe now realized that no matter what, Pearl was determined to oppose her and wouldn't help.

"Emma, come with me," Pearl called to Emma, who was typing nearby.

"Okay," Emma replied, putting down her work.

Chloe looked at Pearl with disdain. Since Pearl's arrival, Chloe felt humiliated.

"Chloe, who does this Pearl think she is? How dare she challenge you? She seems to be losing sight of the situation."

"She is making a joke out of you in front of the whole office. You need to teach her a lesson!" Piper said beside Chloe.

"I won't let her off!" Chloe vowed, her gaze turning fierce. "I'll make her beg to help me!"

Pearl drove the company car this time. Emma, feeling quite pleased, said, "Pearl, how dare you defy Chloe? Everyone here, except Harper, treats her with great respect."

Pearl drove out. "I didn't defy her. I just told the truth. I'm not offending anyone."

"But you've already offended her," Emma said. "She'll definitely target you from now on."

Emma knew Chloe's personality. While it wasn't necessary to flatter her, refusing her was risky. If Chloe set her sights on someone, she wouldn't let them off easily.

Pearl added, "No one stays at the top forever. Someone like her, who is currently in the limelight but acts so arrogantly, will have many enemies. If she falls, everyone will want to mock her."
