Chapter 643 Getting the Marriage Certificate
Liam had a blanket draped over his legs, and Desiree could hear Tessa chatting with the doctor outside. She figured Liam must've hurt his leg.
But she didn't dare to peek under the blanket.
Before she knew it, tears started rolling down her cheeks, soaking the blanket.
Leaning against the hospital bed, Desiree whispered, "Dad, I'm so sorry!"
"Why are you crying? I'm not dead or anything." A strong voice came from above her. She looked up to see Liam, his face looking pretty healthy.
He was still as stern as ever, with those thick eyebrows always making him look like he was judging her.
But Desiree didn't feel rebellious anymore.
With teary eyes, she hugged Liam, saying, "Dad, I'm sorry I got here late."
Liam seemed a bit flustered and tried to comfort her, "When I was young, I went through worse. This is nothing, just a minor fracture."
"Not a broken leg?" As soon as she said it, Desiree realized it was a dumb question.
Sure enough, Liam's face darkened. "Who told you my leg was broken?"
Hearing the noise, Tessa and Harold walked in.
Tessa, who had just heard Desiree's words, looked a bit surprised. "Who said his leg was broken? The doctor said your dad is fine. A minor fracture doesn't need much care. He can go home in a couple of days."
Desiree immediately looked at Harold.
Harold looked away, a bit guilty. "I never said Mr. Sandvik's leg was broken."
Turned out it was all a misunderstanding.
Tessa and the others found it a bit funny, while Desiree awkwardly wiped her tears, feeling a huge sense of relief.
She'd rather look silly than have something bad happen to Liam. Thankfully, it was just a false alarm.
Later, Tessa asked about what happened during the earthquake. Unexpectedly, Liam looked at Harold, his gaze softer than before.
"It happened suddenly. The area was full of old buildings set for demolition. When the earthquake hit, the ground beneath me cracked," Liam recounted calmly. "My leg got stuck, and I couldn't get out. Harold saved me."
Hearing this, Tessa was also surprised. "So, Harold is your savior?"
Liam didn't deny it.
Desiree quietly held Harold's hand and tentatively asked, "So, does this mean you'll give your blessing to Harold and me?"
Liam's glance made her let go reflexively.
But Harold held her hand tightly. She looked at him quickly, only to see a confident and calm smile on his face.
Desiree had a hunch.
And her guess was soon confirmed by Liam. "Harold is a good man. I was biased before. Status isn't everything. He's ambitious and responsible. I believe he can give you a good future, so I agree to your marriage."
Even though Desiree had a feeling, hearing it still felt different.
Immense satisfaction and joy filled her heart. Desiree couldn't help but hug Harold. "Great, my dad agreed to our marriage!"
Harold hugged her back, a faint smile on his lips, showing he was just as happy.
Desiree felt like jumping for joy. He quickly steadied her. "Hey, take it easy, okay?"
"Alright, enough with the lovey-dovey stuff," Liam grumbled, clearly not a fan of their PDA. "Even though I agreed, you still need to be careful. Don't go too far before getting the marriage certificate."
Desiree immediately calmed down, hesitating to let go, worried about being noticed.
She felt a wave of guilt and looked to Harold for help.
Luckily, Harold got the hint.
Tessa stayed at the hospital to take care of Liam, so Desiree and Harold didn't stick around long and left.
They hadn't gotten the marriage certificate before because Desiree's family didn't agree. Now that Liam had given his blessing, they headed straight to city hall to make it official.
Shortly after, holding the marriage certificate, Desiree sparkled with joy as she extended her hand to Harold. "Hello, Mr. Lewis, from now on, please take care of me."
Harold's handsome face lit up with a charming smile, like a fine aged wine.
Seeing no one around, he cupped Desiree's face and gently kissed her on the lips. "Please take care of me too."
Desiree didn't tell anyone about getting the certificate, wanting to keep things low-key since the company was just starting out.
But she did tell Liam and Tessa.
When they found out Desiree had gotten the certificate so quickly, almost right after leaving the hospital, Tessa mentioned that Liam had a dark expression for two days, even advising her to avoid going home unless absolutely necessary to avoid his temper.
Desiree muttered, "He agreed, so why is he still upset?"
"Agreeing and knowing you're married are different things," Tessa said, sounding annoyed over the phone. "It's like raising a flower carefully, and one day someone takes it away. Would you be happy?"
With Tessa's analogy, Desiree finally understood Liam's feelings and why he had been so reluctant before.
It was probably one of the main reasons.
After a brief chat, they hung up.
Desiree remembered something important and said, "By the way, Mom, I'm married now, so make sure to tell Bronte not to set me up with Daryl anymore."
"Oh! I almost forgot. Alright, I'll tell Bronte next time."
Desiree felt completely relieved.
Bronte had always been good to her, often inviting her over when she was a kid.
Back then, she used to joke, "Desiree is so good. If she were my daughter-in-law, that would be even better."
Thinking of those childhood memories, Desiree sighed softly.
Bronte was nice, but they just weren't a match.
Leaving it to Tessa to handle, Desiree felt at ease. With the company busy after landing the Emerald City deal, everyone was working overtime.
Everyone was swamped, and she didn't want to be idle, so she helped out by buying coffee and stuff.
With all these things going on, she soon forgot about the Fields Family.
But a few days later, she got a call.
To her surprise, it was Bronte. "Desiree, I'm going to a charity gala in a few days. Would you be interested in joining me?"
