Chapter 511 Waiting for You to Get Better
Christopher shook his head but gripped Pearl's hand tighter. He slowly raised his hand, and Oscar immediately understood what he wanted.
Pearl's voice cracked with emotion. "Christopher, I promise, when you get better, we'll go back to where Oscar and I grew up. I'll take you to school, pick you up every day, and we'll visit Evans and Kittie. You'll have a happy life, play every day, and eat lots of delicious food."
Christopher nodded, his voice strained. "Okay."
RavenWing understood Pearl's priorities and couldn't blame her. Pearl's upbringing was different from the Eldorians.
"I'll make you something to eat," Pearl said, patting Christopher's hand before standing up.
Oscar noticed the sadness in RavenWing's eyes, gave him a look, and followed Pearl.
Christopher wasn't talkative, but he managed a slow smile for RavenWing, who was always busy in the lab for him. During injections, RavenWing would cover his eyes and comfort him gently. Christopher felt RavenWing's kindness.
RavenWing patted Christopher's head. "Pearl and Oscar are making you something to eat. Have you been feeling better, Christopher?"
Since taking the seven-leaf clover, Christopher looked healthier and hadn't had an asthma attack. The bone marrow matching process was ongoing, and once a match was found, Christopher would get a transplant and grow up healthy and happy. Pearl would remember RavenWing's kindness.
"Christopher," RavenWing started but then swallowed his words. 'He's too young to worry about my mistakes.'
Christopher sensed RavenWing had something to say but didn't ask.
Meanwhile, Pearl found Giovanni and had him take her to the kitchen, stocked for RavenWing and Louis's meals. She decided to make light food for Christopher, avoiding shrimp, fish, and eggs to prevent triggering his asthma. She ended up making porridge.
Oscar stayed by her side. Pearl spoke hoarsely, "As long as there's no external war, we'll be fine inside Eldorians. You don't usually have time to spend with Christopher, do you?"
Oscar, who had been in a coma for over three years, didn't have much time with Christopher after his recovery, especially with tasks assigned by Charles.
"No," Oscar replied, his voice hoarse. He recalled Christopher's tough childhood with Charles, who wanted him to be strong because he was born weak due to Pearl's poisoning during pregnancy.
Pearl could imagine it, but hearing Oscar admit it made her heart ache even more. The past few years had been tough.
"Life goes on. Let's not dwell on the past. We're together now, and Christopher's getting better. That's what matters," Oscar said, trying to lift her spirits.
Pearl felt a bit better, thinking, 'It's better to live in the present than dwell on past pain.'
The porridge was ready. Lost in thought, she reached for the pot and quickly pulled her hand back from the heat, cooling her fingers against her ear.
"Are you okay?" Oscar asked, worried.
As he leaned in, their lips brushed. Oscar cherished the moment but was more concerned about her fingers.
"It's just a bit red and swollen," Pearl said, showing him her hand with a small blister.
Oscar quickly pulled her to the sink. "Rinse it. I'll handle the rest."
He turned off the stove, took the pot off, and poured the porridge into a bowl, carrying it out.
Pearl turned off the faucet and followed him.
On the way, Oscar brought up RavenWing. "I know you can't accept him as your father, and I respect that. But RavenWing is Christopher's grandfather, and the kid has the right to know."
Pearl stayed silent. She couldn't accept RavenWing, a man with blood on his hands, as her father. But without him and the seven-leaf clover, Christopher wouldn't have improved.
She sighed. "Let's talk about it when Christopher gets better."
Oscar didn't push further.
In the lab, Pearl fed Christopher the porridge.
"Mom, the porridge is delicious," Christopher said, finishing the bowl quickly.
RavenWing watched, eyes filled with envy and regret. If only his relationship with Pearl could be like this.
Oscar noticed and sighed inwardly. As a father, he understood RavenWing, but it took time.
After eating, Christopher tugged at Pearl's clothes. "Mom, can I go out for a walk? It's so boring staying here every day."
"Of course," Pearl said, feeling sorry for him. At his age, he should be playing outside, not stuck in a lab.
She found a wheelchair, and with Oscar's help, lifted Christopher into it and pushed him out.
RavenWing wanted to follow but held back. They were a family, and he didn't want to intrude. Plus, with Louis unconscious, he had responsibilities to handle.
RavenWing returned to his room. As soon as he sat down, someone reported, "RavenWing, Serenea's diplomats have arrived."
