Chapter 554 Interrogation
Louis thought RavenWing had some magic trick up his sleeve to counter Paloma's poison, but nope, he was fresh out of ideas. So, Louis just had to stand there, helpless, as Paloma slipped away.
He stayed with her all night, then buried her himself.
Jimena didn't come looking for him that night; she knew he was hurting and figured she'd give him space.
Life was a real kick in the teeth sometimes.
When Louis finally got back, Jimena just hugged him. No words, just that silent understanding.
"Go take a shower and get some sleep. Some things you just can't dodge, but we gotta keep pushing. The Eldorians need us." She was ready to be the rock Louis needed to make Eldorians a better place.
Louis wanted to say something, but the words just wouldn't come. It felt like he had a boulder in his chest.
Jimena's voice was rough. "Paloma was a good girl. She gave her life to protect you from those who wanted you dead."
If Paloma had been a coward, she would've teamed up with those people, but she didn't. Because of her, Louis got the heads-up and took care of business.
"On our wedding night, I'm sorry..." Louis finally managed to say, his voice all raspy.
Paloma had been true to him, giving up her life. Jimena was true too, almost dying for him. They even got hitched, and on their wedding night, he was with someone else.
Jimena gently ran her fingers through his hair. "I get it. I know everything. How could I blame you? This wedding was for show. I don't feel bad. As long as you're with me, every day from now on is our wedding night. We'll make Eldorians great together."
Jimena meant every word, but Paloma's family was gonna be a problem, especially Ricardo.
Ricardo had once been grateful to Louis and Pearl, knowing they were good people. But this time, it was about Paloma.
RavenWing had spent years in the lab, dealing with wars, slave camps, and experiments. After all that, he had no solution?
When Pearl brought Christopher back, it was RavenWing who did the surgery, same for Oscar.
Ricardo was fuming. "I know we're not your family. Our lives as commoners mean nothing to you. You had the ability, so why did you let Paloma die? What did she do wrong? Even poisoned, she didn't plot against you!"
Ricardo had become a soldier, following the troops. Now, with just him and Paloma left, and Paloma gone, he had no one.
He came with all that anger and nothing to lose.
After all, he was alone. What did it matter if he clashed with RavenWing and Louis? Worst case, he'd die.
RavenWing said, "I admit I messed up in the past. But I really had no way. Oscar's poison was cured by his dad. Christopher's case was a bone marrow transplant. I was just keeping him stable."
"Then what about all your research? What about those experimental subjects?" Ricardo shouted, his voice cracking with pain.
He was hurting bad. In those slave camps, there were thousands of people. And now, no follow-up? With all the medicinal herbs in Eldorians, how could Paloma not be saved?
To be honest, wasn't it just because they thought Paloma had a thing for Louis and were scared she'd mess with his head?
Ricardo clutched his chest, the pain almost too much to bear. "You saved so many people. You had all those experiments. Why didn't you want to save Paloma?"
Louis, worried Ricardo might do something crazy, stepped in front of RavenWing. "I tried everything but couldn't save Paloma. That was my failure. If you want revenge, I'm willing to trade my life for hers."
Louis's eyes were dead serious.
"No! You're the leader of Eldorians now. If someone has to die to make things right, let it be me!" Jimena loved Louis too much to let him go down like that. She spread her arms and stood in front of him.
They had just gotten married. The wedding had a purpose, and the wedding night was already a regret.
If one of them died, wouldn't it be over?
At that moment, RavenWing stepped forward. "If you think I let her die, then kill me," he said calmly.
Louis was his most promising successor, and Eldorians' future was bright. If Louis died, it would be a huge loss for Eldorians.
"Even if I had to die, I couldn't bear to let Louis die," RavenWing thought.
Moreover, Louis and Jimena had done nothing wrong. The one at fault was him, so let him bear it all.
Ricardo was torn up and heartbroken over Paloma's death, but if he really killed RavenWing or Louis, wouldn't he be the villain of Eldorians?
RavenWing had once neglected Eldorians due to his experiments, letting Kevin take advantage and keeping Eldorians in constant chaos. RavenWing was at fault, but he had also led the people of Eldorians to glory, and Louis was changing Eldorians in his own way, especially now, with Eldorians in peace.
"Ricardo." Ricardo's throat ached, and before he could say anything, a gentle, low voice came from afar.
Ricardo looked up and saw Pearl walking over.
The scene from five years ago, when Pearl protected him, was still fresh in his mind.
"Ms. Mitchell," Ricardo said.
Pearl had taught them for a very short time, but she had saved his life.
Pearl had already reached Ricardo, her expression firm. "I taught you for less than an hour, but you still recognize me as your teacher. What about Mr. Louis Mitchell?"
Louis had taught them for so long, and now Ricardo didn't recognize him?
Pearl wanted Ricardo to realize this and spoke slowly, "You need to understand, it wasn't Louis who intentionally caused Paloma's death. And Louis has already captured the culprits and will give you and Paloma an explanation."
"An explanation? She's dead." Ricardo's mouth twisted in deep sarcasm. "RavenWing has done so many experiments, with so many experimental subjects. How could he not cure the poison?"
