Chapter 764 I Don't Care

Azalea had just questioned George's sincerity, and now she was feeling a wave of guilt.

Feeling remorseful, she said, "You go ahead and get back to work. We can talk more when we meet tonight."

This was exactly what Nathaniel wanted to hear.

He hung up the phone and sat in the car for a bit, waiting for Saskia's video. When it finally came through, it was even more explicit than the last one.

Satisfied, Nathaniel closed his phone and got out of the car.

Meanwhile, Jade had prepared a feast at home. Nathaniel's seat to her left was left empty, while Amy Waverly, Jade's ideal daughter-in-law candidate, occupied the seat to her right.

"Mrs. Egan, do you think Nathaniel might not like me?" Amy glanced at her watch nervously.

It was getting late, and Nathaniel still hadn't shown up. Was he deliberately avoiding her?

Jade's eyes sparkled with amusement.

She was much gentler with Amy than she was with Saskia. "Feelings can grow over time. You're wonderful in every way. How could he not like you? He might be even more eager to marry you than I am," she said.

"That would be perfect. My parents are always pushing me to bring home a son-in-law. They're eager to have grandchildren," Amy said, her cheeks flushing.

From a young age, she knew she was destined for a business marriage. No matter how much her parents and brother doted on her, it didn't change that fact. The best she could do was choose someone she liked from a pool of suitable candidates.

And Nathaniel was the one she had chosen.

Jade's smile grew wider. "I feel just like your parents do. We don't have a preference for boys over girls. As long as it's your child, I'll love them."

After all, in wealthy families, the more children, the better. One of them was bound to turn out well.

Nathaniel walked in just in time to hear this.

His expression darkened. "Mom, did you invite me to dinner just to set me up with a woman?"

"Nathaniel, watch your tone. This is Amy, the daughter of the Waverly family," Jade emphasized Amy's family background, her eyes full of warning.

She wouldn't tolerate Nathaniel's attitude towards a well-matched heiress.

Yet Nathaniel remained unmoved.

A mocking smile played on his lips. "Did I say anything wrong?" he exclaimed.

Not only was Jade trying to set him up with a woman, but she also had their future children planned out.

He was a person!

"Nathaniel," Jade snapped angrily.

Sensing the tension, Amy stepped in to diffuse the situation. "Nathaniel, our parents are old friends. I'm just here for dinner. Don't overthink it."

"Alright, let's eat before the food gets cold," Jade said, dropping the subject.

The main goal tonight was for Nathaniel and Amy to get to know each other and exchange contact information.

Then Nathaniel sat down at the table, but he had no appetite. He barely touched his food."Nathaniel, I heard from Mrs. Egan that you're a lawyer. I took some law courses in college. Maybe we could chat about it after dinner if you're free," Amy suggested, trying to break the ice.

Jade quickly put down her utensils. "That's wonderful. You two have a lot in common. I'll head upstairs for my beauty routine."

As soon as Jade left, Amy scooted her chair closer to Nathaniel.

"I'm not interested," Nathaniel said bluntly.

"That's okay. There's a new coffee shop near your law firm. We could check it out next time," Amy persisted, not letting his initial rejection faze her.

She didn't need Nathaniel to be head over heels for her. As long as he was willing to marry and have a child, that was enough.

Nathaniel's frown deepened. "I don't have time any day. Ms. Waverly, we both know why my mom set this up. I'm straightforward. I can't be with you."

"Nathaniel, don't be so sure. You might end up changing your mind," Amy said, her smile faltering for a moment before brightening again.

When she first learned she was to be used as a business pawn, she had been reluctant too.

But what choice did she have?

In their world, enjoying wealth and privilege came at the cost of having their marriages arranged by their parents.

Amy knew she couldn't change that, and neither could Nathaniel. No matter how much he resisted, Jade and Robbie wouldn't let him be reckless with his marriage.

"Ms. Waverly, with your qualities, I'm sure you have plenty of admirers. Why focus on me? I already have someone special in my heart," Nathaniel said, finding the whole situation quite amusing.

He knew what kind of woman Saskia was, a gold-digger unworthy of love.

No matter what he did, he couldn't warm her heart.

Yet, he was hopelessly in love with her.

Because of love, he felt hatred, resentment, and a desire for revenge.

However, Amy smiled again. "Like I said, I genuinely don't care."

She wasn't a naive teenager who believed love was the most important thing in the world.

Even typical marriages weren't immune to infidelity, let alone theirs.

Amy's father had numerous affairs, but none of those women dared to confront her or have illegitimate children.

Amy and her brother were the only heirs of the Waverly family, and that was enough for her.

Her expectations for her future husband were just as simple.

"You're unbelievable," Nathaniel said, standing up to leave.

Amy grabbed his arm. "Don't rush off. Mrs. Egan may be in her room, but she's still listening. My parents are also very concerned. Can we at least put on a show?"

Nathaniel felt no need for pretense.

He knew Jade too well.

If he agreed to exchange contact information tonight, she would soon be pushing for marriage and kids.

The best approach was to refuse outright from the beginning.
