Chapter 665 Seeing is Believing

As Cressida popped the question, the room went dead quiet.

Ember's face went stiff. She saw Cressida's and Isolde's expressions shift and tried to fix things fast.

But then Harold blurted out, "I'm already married."

Isolde's fork clattered to the floor. She looked confused for a second, then her eyes welled up with tears.

Cressida shot up, fuming. "Why didn't you tell me he was married?"

"No, he's lying," Ember snapped at Harold. "There's a woman who's been bugging him, but they split ages ago."

Cressida scoffed.

That might fool some folks, but not these seasoned elders.

If they broke up so long ago, why not clear it up from the start? Even if Ember wasn't lying, Harold was still a divorced guy.

No matter how great he seemed, how could she let Isolde marry a man with that kind of baggage?

Cressida grabbed Isolde's hand and glared at them. "Isolde's not marrying someone like this. We're outta here."

Isolde, still in shock, got dragged away, looking back at Harold with longing eyes as they left.

Watching them go, Ember was livid.

She turned to Harold. "Why'd you say that? If you'd just kept quiet, with Isolde's feelings for you, it would've been easy for you two to get together."

"Mom, I need to ask you something." Harold cut her off, his eyes cold, making Ember shiver and feel a bit scared. "What do you want to ask?"

"Did you have anything to do with Desiree's kid?" Harold asked slowly, his intensity making Ember step back.

Realizing how far she'd retreated, Ember lowered her head, looking pretty upset. "I'm your mother, and you question me like this?"

Harold stayed silent, his eyes locked on her.

"Fine! I see you've been brainwashed by that woman, even doubting me. Why don't you just send me to the cops?" Ember sneered loudly. "You think I killed the kid? Then I'm a murderer, go ahead, call the police."

Harold's intense gaze softened under her loud voice, like layers of armor peeling away, showing his most vulnerable side.

His eyes, once cold, now looked incredibly sad.

Seeing this, Ember panicked. She hadn't been scared before, not even when she hurt Desiree.

But now, she was terrified.

"Don't be like this, I'm doing this for you," she tried to reason. "Keeping Desiree around will ruin you! It's not just the gossip, I checked out the guy she's rumored with. That's Fields Corporation, a massive company we can't compete with. Your business is just starting, you can't go up against a giant like that."

No matter how much Ember said, Harold just shook his head. "No, Mom, you're wrong. I don't care about the company."

He didn't have the ambition everyone thought he had.

After being Oscar's assistant for so long, he was used to being the second-in-command, and he liked it.

He started the company for Desiree, to give her a better life.

But now, did Desiree have a better life? A flicker of doubt crossed Harold's eyes. Suddenly, he wasn't sure if his stubbornness was right or wrong.

Maybe if he hadn't started the company, they could've found another way to convince Liam and the others, and things wouldn't have ended up like this.

"Go back, I won't be coming out again," Harold said coolly to Ember behind him, "Hand over the rest of the Saffron."

Then he walked away.

This time, Harold and Ember parted on bad terms again.

After that, he stayed with Desiree, even letting others temporarily manage the company.

Luckily, Oscar was there to help keep things running smoothly.

With Harold constantly by her side, Desiree's condition improved a lot, slowly coming out of the shadow of losing the child. Only occasionally, she'd zone out staring at some small objects.

Sometimes it was a baby bottle someone else was using, sometimes a small toy.

But overall, she was getting better.

Seeing her gradually improving, Harold finally relaxed a bit. After a few days of silence, Ember finally called and agreed to hand over the Saffron.

As soon as Harold heard this, he immediately wanted to send an assistant to get it.

But Ember could guess his thoughts. "You can get the stuff, but you have to come yourself."

Harold thought for a moment and agreed, telling Desiree he was going home to get something.

But he never expected that shortly after he left, Desiree would sneak out of the hospital and follow him.

"Follow that Audi in front, please," Desiree said to the taxi driver.

The driver glanced at the black Audi two cars ahead and said meaningfully, "Miss, this isn't a good idea in broad daylight."

He then prepared to give a long-winded lecture.

"My husband is cheating on me, I'm going to catch him." Desiree's one sentence shut him up. Seeing the driver choke on his words, she tightly gripped her phone, her face expressionless.

She wasn't exactly lying. Because she had received a message a day ago from an unknown number.

It was a picture.

When she opened it, she saw a man and a woman sitting together having a meal, with two other people beside them, seemingly trying to set them up. One of them was Ember. And the man was Harold.

Her fingers clenched, and Desiree stared at the low-resolution picture, almost boring a hole into Harold's profile.

Her heart twisted in pain, as if an invisible hand was squeezing it, making it hard for her to breathe.

It was because of this photo that Desiree decided to follow Harold back.

She didn't believe in hearsay, wanting to see it with her own eyes.

Seeing Desiree suddenly fall silent, the driver seemed to guess something, feeling a bit of sympathy, and silently stepped on the gas.

Fifteen minutes later, Desiree arrived at the Lewis family's building.

There was a small playground outside, usually a favorite spot for retired elderly people who often gossiped there.

Coincidentally, as Desiree arrived, she heard someone say, "I just saw the Lewis family's son, he's really handsome."

"Isn't he? I heard he started his own company and became a boss. It's a pity he already has a fiancée. I just saw his mom bring a girl up; they've already met the parents, so marriage isn't far off."
