Chapter 40 Actually, I Am Getting A Divorce From Him.
Pearl paused for a moment at Haley's words.
'What does I have to be used for?'
A person as smart as Oscar, who could he possibly use if not her?
Seeing Pearl's hesitation, Haley raised her chin, looking smug. "Don't you want to know how he's using you?"
The notion of being used seemed far-fetched to Pearl. However, she was certain that Haley would try various tactics to sow discord.
She turned back, Haley's lips still curved in a smile, expecting her to ask.
She didn't want to play into Haley's hands, so she decided to go along with what Haley wanted.
"You want me to know more than I do, don't you?"
Haley's face stiffened.
She was really annoyed.
Pearl looked at her directly, her tone cold. "Your goal is just to see me divorce Oscar, so you can marry into the Brown family, right? Are you feeling threatened now?"
Haley instinctively clenched her fists, still trying to act tough. "You two will get divorced one day, why would I feel threatened? No way!"
Hearing the anger in her voice, Pearl mocked, ""If you're not feeling threatened, why do you bring up divorce every time you see me? You're more anxious than Oscar. Oscar doesn't want a divorce, but you're the one in a hurry. You can't find a way through Oscar, so you try with me."
"Pearl, don't be so self-absorbed, I'm doing this for your own good!" Haley could never admit to this.
"For my own good?" Pearl found it a huge joke, mocking, "You're just making excuses for yourself, trying to find reasons that convince me. Everyone wishes me well, except you. Your plan is off the mark. If you're so eager to see me divorced, you're looking in the wrong place. Go find Oscar, see if he'll divorce me!"
Pearl's words infuriated Haley, her chest heaving, tears welling up in her eyes.
In the blink of an eye, Hathaway couldn't find Haley. When she did, Oscar was right behind her.
Seeing Pearl and Haley together, Hathaway was afraid Haley was being bullied, exclaiming, "Haley, why are you out? You're sick, what are you doing here?"
Haley's old wound had reopened, blood dripping, her face growing paler.
As Hathaway approached, Haley fell into her arms, fragile like a broken doll.
"Haley!" Hathaway was startled, holding Haley in her arms tenderly, "What's wrong, why are you bleeding so much!"
She turned to Pearl, angry, and lashed out, "Pearl, what did you say to Haley to upset her so much? Are you bullying her behind my back again!"
Then she turned to Oscar, reprimanding, "Look at Pearl, besides using these malicious means, what else can she do?"
Having witnessed her tactics before, Pearl knew Haley was good at playing the victim in front of others.
She didn't want to bear the blame of persecuting Haley, "Hathaway, if you like Haley, I can accept that, but you need to be responsible for what you say. I was just getting hot water for Haley, she followed me out, I didn't even touch her, how can you blame me?"
"You're still trying to argue, you knew she couldn't handle stress, yet you said things to upset her!" Hathaway was furious.
"She didn't have to follow me, did she?" Pearl retorted.
Hathaway, incensed, said, "With Haley in this state, how can you be so callous?"
"Enough." Oscar remained cold throughout. "Take Haley back first."
The doctors and nurses came and carried Haley away.
Hathaway left too, more concerned about Haley's condition.
As Haley lay on the bed, Hathaway escorted her all the way, her hands clasped in worry at the emergency room entrance.
The doctor was updating Oscar on Haley's condition, too preoccupied to acknowledge Pearl.
Pearl stood by, watching them laboring over Haley, feeling like an outsider.
When Haley was wheeled out, they escorted her back.
Oscar didn't go in, instead noticing Pearl walking behind him. He turned back and said to her, "Haley can't handle any more stress right now, don't be alone with her."
Pearl's heart clenched 'Was he blaming me?'
Oscar blamed her for upsetting Haley, warning her not to bother Haley in the future.
Seeing her head down without saying anything, he thought she might be overthinking, so he gently stroked her head. "What's wrong, are you upset?"
"Oscar, come quickly!" Hathaway, wiping tears, opened the door to the ward and shouted, "Haley needs you, if you're not here, how will she recover?"
Seeing Hathaway in distress, Oscar turned back to Pearl. "Wait outside for a while, I'll be right back."
Pearl didn't reply because she knew that between her and Haley, she would always be the one left behind.
She stood outside, like an insignificant bystander.
She watched Haley collapse in his arms, crying weakly.
She watched Oscar, not pushing her away but quietly patting her back.
Pearl's back was aching, not wanting to witness their affectionate scene, so she found a bench and sat down.
She waited quietly for them to come out.
After what seemed like an eternity, Magdalen patted her shoulder.
"Pearl."
Magdalen rushed over in a panic, relieved to see Pearl sitting there fine. "I just messaged Oscar, he said he's at the hospital, I thought you were sick, so I rushed over to see you. Why are you sitting here, where's Oscar?"
Pearl looked towards the direction of the ward and replied calmly, "He's inside."
Following her gaze, Magdalen asked, "Who's in there? Someone who needs his care?"
Magdalen walked over and saw both him and Hathaway inside, pursing her lips, "Does Haley have no family left? If she needs their care, I'll go talk to them."
Pearl grabbed Magdalen's arm, facing reality. "Magdalen, don't go talk to them, it makes no sense."
Magdalen looked at Pearl and asked, "How long have you been sitting here? You're Oscar's wife after all, you should be with him, isn't this giving them an opportunity?"
Pearl shook her head. "Magdalen, I've gotten used to it."
Magdalen felt very sorry for Pearl, she must have seen this scene many times before, she was too sensible, too submissive in her affections. "Pearl, if you like Oscar, you have to be brave. You're his wife, what can't you have? I believe, as long as you want it, Oscar is yours!"
Pearl smiled bitterly, seeing Magdalen so confident, just like she and David used to think, that Oscar would eventually fall in love with Pearl.
However, that wasn't the case.
"Magdalen, actually, I'm about to divorce Oscar."
This time, Pearl didn't conceal the truth. She didn't want Magdalen to worry needlessly for her.
"What?"
