Chapter 809 The Feeling of a Family of Three
Saskia stared at the pills in her hand, feeling all sorts of conflicted, before shoving them back in her pocket. She acted like she never even took them out.
Nathaniel had gone through a lot of trouble for her, so she decided not to bring it up. The caregiver he found for Benjamin was super diligent, which really took a load off Saskia's mind. After a few visits, she felt way more relaxed and could finally focus on her own health.
Nathaniel set up a follow-up with Quincy. "Quincy's got some free time, so I asked him to check on you," he said.
Saskia kept quiet, but Quincy had plenty to say. Free time? More like Nathaniel, that shameless guy, dragged him out of the hospital.
"After checking you out, it looks like your stomach's not doing great. You haven't been eating much, huh? Try to eat a bit more," Quincy advised.
Saskia looked away, feeling guilty for the first time in front of Nathaniel. He stared at her for a bit before asking, "Anything else?"
"Nope, just make sure to rest up. I gotta go; the hospital's crazy busy. Don't call me unless it's an emergency," Quincy said, glancing at his watch and rushing off. He probably had surgeries lined up.
Saskia thought Nathaniel would start questioning her, but instead, he called the maid over. "Has she not been eating much lately?" he asked.
The maid glanced at Saskia and replied, "Ms. Fuller has been eating very little. I've tried to persuade her, but she just can't eat."
"It's true. I don't have much of an appetite. It's not the maid's fault," Saskia said, rubbing her temples.
Since that day, she hadn't left Nathaniel's place. He first used her illness as an excuse, then later claimed it was more convenient for her to visit Benjamin. One thing led to another, and she still hadn't left. She felt like she had been tricked. But Nathaniel had been on his best behavior these days, not crossing any lines, so she didn't say anything. She said, "A lot has happened recently, and I just can't eat. It'll get better with time."
The medication also messed with her appetite. Nathaniel watched her quietly for a moment, his eyes deep and unreadable, like he had figured something out. Then he told the maid, "Change up the flavors. She needs to eat."
It was directed at the maid, but also at Saskia. She felt helpless but couldn't refuse the kindness, so she tried to eat a bit more.
"I talked with Jeffery. We can occasionally take Benjamin out to play. His condition has stabilized, and it's not good for him to be cooped up in the hospital all the time," Nathaniel said.
"Really?" Saskia's face lit up with joy at Nathaniel's confirmation. She had never gotten this excited about her own good news. Benjamin had been cooped up for too long. Kids loved to play, and while a few days in the hospital were fine, over time, he became noticeably downcast. But he was considerate and didn't want to trouble Saskia, so he kept it to himself. It pained Saskia to see it.
"But we still can't take him to noisy places, right?" Saskia asked, wanting to be sure.
"Yeah, quieter places are fine. Benjamin has always wanted to go to an amusement park, right? We can rent it out," Nathaniel suggested.
"Rent it out?" Saskia's face twitched. If it weren't for Nathaniel, she might never have done something like this in her life. But given Benjamin's condition, it was actually the best option. Thinking of Benjamin's eager little face, Saskia didn't hesitate for long and replied, "Alright, let's go tomorrow. I'll tell Benjamin."The next morning, Saskia headed to the hospital to pick up Benjamin. She wanted to surprise him, so she kept their destination a secret.
On the way, Benjamin was bouncing with excitement, constantly asking, "Mom, where are we going today? Is Mr. Egan coming too?"
Saskia's expression shifted slightly at the mention of Nathaniel. "Benjamin, do you like Mr. Nathaniel Egan?" she asked.
Benjamin nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, he brings me lots of things. I also like Mrs. Egan."
Saskia replied, "I see."
Seeing Benjamin's innocent face, unaware that the Mr. Egan he spoke of was actually his father, Saskia felt a pang in her heart. For a moment, she wondered if keeping his birth a secret from Nathaniel and the Egan family was the right choice. Maybe if she hadn't, he wouldn't have grown up without a father's presence.
Suddenly, Benjamin's face lit up as he spotted someone. He let go of her hand and ran off.
"Mr. Egan!" He jumped into Nathaniel's arms.
Nathaniel knelt down and picked him up. For someone usually so distant, he actually smiled at Benjamin. "I haven't seen you in a couple of days. Have you been good?"
Benjamin nodded. "Yes, and Mom is taking me out to play. Can you come too?"
Both of them looked at Saskia.
Saskia snapped out of her daze and pinched Benjamin's cheek. "You little rascal, you forget about Mom as soon as you see Mr. Egan."
"No, I didn't forget about Mom." Benjamin laughed, grabbing her hand.
Saskia's gaze softened.
Nathaniel watched for a moment before saying, "Let's get in the car. It's getting late."
Saskia got in the car with Benjamin, who insisted on sitting next to her, so she didn't sit in the front. Nathaniel had also arranged for a driver and sat in the back with them. Benjamin sat in the middle, with them on either side. With Benjamin between them, they weren't too close, which made Saskia feel relieved.
After Azalea's death, she felt even more distant from Nathaniel. She used to think being alone was fine, but now she wanted nothing to do with him. In her eyes, Nathaniel belonged to Azalea. She couldn't touch someone Azalea loved, especially after her death.
Nathaniel's eyes darkened as he saw Saskia's distance, and he absentmindedly held Benjamin's hand.
Fifteen minutes later, the car stopped at the amusement park entrance. Since it was rented out, the usually bustling park was unusually quiet. Only the staff waited outside. They didn't need tickets to enter.
A staff member handed Benjamin a cotton candy. "This is for you."
Benjamin exclaimed, "Wow, such a big cotton candy!"
Saskia looked at the bunny-shaped cotton candy. It was indeed quite large. Benjamin held the cotton candy in one hand and Saskia's hand in the other, and he bounced into the park.
All the rides were running, and staff were nearby to ensure safety. Benjamin, born with a heart condition, had never been to an amusement park. He was thrilled and curious, looking at everything.
He ran to the roller coaster and pointed. "Mom, is this a roller coaster? I've seen it on TV."
Sensing his excitement, Saskia felt a pang of sadness. She said, "Yes, but you can't ride it yet. How about the carousel instead?"
Benjamin was still under observation. Roller coasters were too intense for someone with a heart condition. To be safe, Benjamin couldn't ride it until he was fully discharged.
Benjamin was disappointed for a moment but quickly nodded. "I won't ride it. I just wanted to ask."
Then he ran off to another area. Benjamin was full of energy, and Saskia couldn't follow him everywhere. She kept him within sight, reminding him not to run off, and let him explore.
