Chapter 599 Meeting Someone Who Can Save a Life

Not long after they headed out, they stumbled upon a pond. Desiree lit up and helped Harold lean against a tree.

She ripped a piece of cloth from her skirt, soaked it in the water, and started wiping Harold down, muttering, "Harold, you gotta get better. When we get back, I'll agree to whatever you want."

She figured Harold was out of it and probably couldn't hear her.

But then, out of nowhere, Harold grabbed her hand, his eyes blazing. "You mean it?"

Desiree jumped. If he wasn't burning up, she'd think he was faking it.

Blushing, she said, "I didn't say anything. Let go."

Harold grinned. "No way, I heard you loud and clear."

Desiree looked down, pushing him away in frustration. "You're totally faking this fever."

Harold immediately looked hurt. He took her hand and placed it on his chest. "Feel that and tell me I'm lying."

Feeling the heat, Desiree stopped teasing. She frowned. "Alright, let's get you out of here."

She started dragging Harold along. Suddenly, she stopped, eyes lighting up. She spotted a middle-aged man with a hunting dog.

She rushed over. "Hey, are you from around here?"

Her voice was urgent. The man looked her over and asked, "What's up?"

Desiree quickly explained, "My friend here is really sick with a fever. We got lost. Do you have any fever medicine? I'll pay."

In a place like this, she had to take every chance.

The man looked them over. "You came here for fun? You look more like refugees."

Desiree glanced at herself and Harold, feeling a bit embarrassed. They did look rough.

The man sighed, "Follow me. Didn't catch anything today, but maybe finding you two is a sign."

Desiree was thrilled. "Thank you so much."

She followed him with Harold to a simple but tidy wooden house. The man handed her two pills from a medicine box. "Give him these. Medicine's scarce around here. We only go out every ten days or so for supplies."

Desiree quickly thanked him. She got some water and helped Harold take the medicine.

After taking it, Harold fell into a deep sleep. First time in two days he'd been on a bed.

Desiree sighed in relief and turned to the man. "Thanks for your help. We'll make sure to repay you once we're out."

The middle-aged man gave Desiree a look that made her uneasy and a bit nervous. She knew she was attractive, and this guy had probably been living in the mountains with little contact with women.

Could he have any intentions towards her?

The thought made her extra cautious. With Harold still sick, she might be defenseless against this man.

Sensing her thoughts, the man said, "Don't worry, you're not my type. I like women with more curves."

Desiree felt embarrassed, like she'd been caught being paranoid and full of herself.

The man continued, "Take care of him tonight. He should be better by tomorrow. I'll get you out then. No need for thanks. Just bring me a couple of good bottles of wine when you get out."

Desiree sighed in relief and smiled. "Sure, I have some good wine at home. You can try it then."

Mentioning wine seemed to make the man more chatty. He grinned, "You must be from a wealthy family. Those must be your family's treasures. I bet they taste great."

Desiree laughed. "You won't be disappointed."

The man said, "Alright, I'll get you something to eat."

He went into the kitchen, and Desiree went back to check on Harold. She touched his forehead and found that his temperature had returned to normal.

Desiree was surprised and relieved. It seemed Harold would be fine by tomorrow.

She got up to fetch some water, but Harold grabbed her wrist. He had woken up and asked in a hoarse voice, "Where are you going?"

Desiree was delighted. "You're awake already?"

Before Harold could respond, the man called from outside, "If you're awake, come eat. Don't just lie there expecting her to do all the work."

Harold vaguely understood the situation. Although he had been feverish, he wasn't completely out of it.

He got out of bed and said, "Let's go."

They went out to find four pieces of bread and two simple dishes on the table.

The man said, "This is all I have."

He then glanced at Harold and said, "Nice threads. How did you end up here?"

Harold's clothes didn't have obvious logos, but the man recognized their value. Harold realized he wasn't dealing with an ordinary person.

He smiled and said, "You must be mistaken. These are just regular clothes."

The man shrugged and said, "Your girlfriend is really good to you. She dragged you all this way. You should cherish her."

Desiree was about to explain, but Harold went along with it.

After dinner, the man lazily stood up and said, "You clean up the dishes. I won't bother you anymore."

With that, he staggered into his room.

Desiree bit her lip, not questioning Harold. Deep down, she didn't mind.
