Chapter 470 I'll Take You Back to Willow Creek
Pearl was the first to spot Adrian.
She instinctively pushed Jeffery away and stood up, wanting to walk towards Adrian, but her legs felt like lead.
"Adrian," Pearl murmured. Jeffery stayed close, worried she might fall.
Adrian noticed Pearl too. He'd heard her name while talking to Oscar on the phone and had come to find her.
Just as he imagined, Pearl was stunning.
Some memories flashed in his mind, but he couldn't grasp them.
Pearl saw the clarity in Adrian's eyes; she remembered finding him in the slave camp.
Adrian had forgotten the past.
Pearl turned to Jeffery. "Jeffery, can you help him get his memories back?"
If someone forgets their past, their life is a blank slate.
Pearl thought it was okay if Adrian forgot her, but forgetting his family and experiences was cruel.
"I'll see what I can do," Jeffery agreed.
Adrian stayed because he found Pearl. Even if he forgot the past, he felt he could remember her name.
So he stayed by her side, hoping to remember more quickly.
Seeing Pearl silent, Jeffery didn't push Adrian away. He drew blood and handed it to Pearl.
Pearl was hesitant.
Jeffery said, "Pearl, I won't hurt you. You know I'm an experimental subject now, and my blood is good for you. Remember the cross bracelet I gave you?"
Pearl didn't respond.
She hadn't forgotten. Wearing that bracelet made her feel at ease.
"The cross bracelet has my blood, Pearl. My blood helps you. When we were on the run, I fed you. When RavenWing studied me, it was..."
"Ms. Harris! Mr. Brown's call!" a deep voice interrupted.
A man in camouflage quickly walked over with a phone.
Pearl took the phone.
Before she could speak, Oscar's hoarse voice came through. "Are you okay?"
"I'm not hurt. How about you?"
"I'm fine," Oscar sighed in relief. "Wait for me. I'll be back soon."
"Okay."
Their brief conversation sounded intimate to Jeffery and Adrian, who knew Pearl and Oscar were married.
After hanging up, Pearl handed the phone back.
Under Jeffery's insistence, she drank his blood.
Pearl smelled a faint fragrance, feeling heartbroken. Jeffery had gone through so much to become an experimental subject.
Jeffery had endured so much pain!
"Is the poison in my body still not cured?"
Why else would Jeffery's blood help her?
Jeffery said softly, "No, the poison's gone. Oscar gave you the antidote. You're just really weak now. Since I'm here, I can help. Don't overthink it, Carol."
"Call me Pearl."
Before, she didn't mind the name since she hadn't interacted much with Jeffery. She didn't know Carol was RavenWing's daughter's name.
Now that she knew, it felt overwhelming.
"I've always called you Carol. From the moment I met you, you were Carol. Even though you're Pearl now, Carol, no one can change your past. Being human means accepting things we can't choose," Jeffery said, looking at her.
'Accept?' Pearl wanted to laugh but couldn't.
"I know RavenWing and his men killed many people and turned you into this for their selfish desires!"
Scenes from her past flashed through her mind. She couldn't imagine how she survived in Eldorians as Carol.
"Jeffery, I'm tired. I want to sleep. When Oscar comes back, call me." She turned and lay down.
Jeffery stayed quietly by her side, even fanning her to make her more comfortable.
Oscar returned an hour later.
After getting Pearl's location from his men, he headed straight for her tent.
He pulled back the tent flap and saw Jeffery by Pearl's side, with Adrian nearby.
When they saw Oscar, Jeffery and Adrian got up and left to give them space.
When Pearl woke up and saw Oscar, she thought she was hallucinating. But then she remembered coming to Oscar's camp with Jeffery.
So, it wasn't a hallucination.
Pearl reached out to touch Oscar's face. He instinctively leaned closer.
Then he grabbed her hand.
"I'm sorry, I..."
Oscar started to apologize, but Pearl interrupted, placing her hand on his lips. "Don't say sorry. It's not your fault."
She knew the situation back then.
"You should rest here for a while. Once you're better, I'll take you back to Willow Creek, okay?" Oscar asked, seeking her opinion.
From his eyes, Pearl knew he understood everything.
Pearl nodded. "I'll take Barbara and Adrian back with me."
She tightened her grip on Oscar's hand. "Oscar, I want to go with you. But you have your mission, and I know I can't be selfish."
Pearl lowered her head, no longer looking at him. Her breathing became tight, and her throat felt blocked.
Oscar had his mission, and she couldn't take him away.
