Chapter 207 You're Acting Strange Today

"He might've been pitiful before, but that doesn't mean he still is," Noah said. "Oscar's now the head of the Brown Group. Even though we're abroad, look at how folks in Willow Creek treat him. Alfonso can't even get a word in."

Zoey couldn't argue and started crying again. "Are we just gonna stand by and watch Aurora suffer? I'd rather take her place!"

Aurora was their daughter, and they'd do anything to save her.

But Noah had responsibilities. The Johnson Group had a lot of employees depending on him; he couldn't just ignore them.

Noah had to think carefully.

At the police station, Pearl had already given her statement.

The digital recorder was authenticated; it wasn't fake.

There's no such thing as a perfect crime.

Even if Aurora erased the surveillance footage, tampering leaves traces.

It was quickly discovered that Aurora's driver had messed with the surveillance.

When the driver was questioned, the truth came out.

Aurora, sitting in the interrogation room, was on the verge of breaking down, shouting for a lawyer and demanding to see Zoey and Noah!

Pearl had done everything she needed to do and didn't care what would happen to Aurora afterward; she would get the punishment she deserved.

Oscar had been with Pearl the whole time.

At one point, Pearl even said, "Oscar, you've been working all day and have to work tomorrow. You don't need to stay with me this late."

She was considerate, thinking of him in every way.

Naturally, Oscar didn't agree, but he noticed Pearl's sudden change in attitude. She had been distant before, now she was kind, raising suspicions.

He didn't dare to delve into it, though, and instead took care of her.

By the time everything was over, it was already two or three in the morning.

Janetta and the others had been sent back by Pearl; with Oscar around, nothing would happen.

After finally relaxing, Pearl felt an overwhelming wave of exhaustion, her head spinning. It seemed that pregnancy was making her more prone to fatigue.

Pearl held her head, and when Oscar turned to look at her, she put her hand down.

"Are you tired? I told you I'd handle it, but you insisted on coming. Sit for a while; I'll have someone bring the car," Oscar said, showing extreme care for Pearl. He then looked at Harold, who had been waiting for a long time. "Go buy a bottle of water."

Pearl sat down and looked back at Oscar. "Thanks for staying with me so long today."

Her words of gratitude sounded sincere, but Oscar pursed his lips and frowned slightly. "Why are you suddenly so polite today? Shouldn't you be blaming me for making you suffer?" He added coldly, "I'll handle Aurora's matter. She'll pay double for what she's done!"

Pearl lowered her head and said softly, "Do you know why Aurora harmed me? She knows I'm your wife."

"So what if she knows?" Oscar said coldly, "It doesn't matter if the whole world knows; it's no excuse to hurt you."

Pearl looked at him and said, "You saved her once, maybe you've forgotten."

Oscar didn't need to think about it; it couldn't be the reason for her suffering. "That was years ago; it would've been better if I hadn't saved her at all."

Saying this, his positive image might darken considerably, but he was no longer in the military; he was a businessman and didn't like others causing him trouble.

Pearl pursed her lips and continued, "She likes you. She told me you had an agreement, that you'd marry her someday. Of course, I know you never said that, but she remembers you saving her to this day."

Talking about this, Pearl felt a connection. In some ways, she was like Aurora; they both fell for him because he saved them, but Pearl wasn't as extreme.

If Oscar hadn't married Pearl back then, she might have given up and not clung to him.

Reflecting now, not marrying her might have spared them all these troubles.

"Saving people was a military operation and had little to do with me personally. Who would willingly risk their life? It was the belief and duty at the time. If it wasn't for that initial decision, I might not have been in the military, and there wouldn't have been so much going on," Oscar hypothesized. If he had stayed with the Brown family and never left, he wouldn't have participated in those life-risking actions.

To him, it wasn't about glory but a low point in his past.

"I know." Pearl smiled at him. "It's all in the past. I won't dwell on those things anymore."

She had known all along that Oscar saved her out of duty and responsibility, which was why he didn't remember her at all.

Oscar's eyes fixed on her. Although she was smiling and everything seemed calm, he felt something was off. This wasn't how Pearl usually reacted. "You're acting strange today."

"Am I?" Pearl linked her arm with his. "Perhaps those who've danced with death knows better what they want."

Her sudden closeness made Oscar feel flattered. Even though he found it strange, her initiative left him with no room to question but to explain, "Today I was attending an award ceremony. You were resting yesterday, and I didn't get a chance to tell you. From now on, I'll keep my phone on all day, so you'll always be able to reach me."

"I understand you." Pearl never blamed him. "Let's go home. By the way, didn't you say you wanted to go to Francina? Do you have time recently? If not..."

"I do," Oscar replied, a rare hint of joy on his face as he held her hand. "There's nothing that requires my personal attention anymore. Going to Francina will be a good break for us. We've been married for so long and haven't gone anywhere together. This is a good opportunity."

"Alright," Pearl responded. "I'm hungry. Are you? I've had groceries delivered. Let's go back now, and I can cook you a hot meal."

Afraid that she would tire herself out, Oscar suggested, "You're tired today. Let the servants handle it."

"I want to cook a meal for you," Pearl insisted, looking at him. "I also bought some wine. Let's have a quiet dinner tonight, no arguments, no discussions, okay?"

Oscar gazed deeply into her eyes, remaining silent for a long time.

But Pearl's eyes were filled with expectation and approval, making it impossible for him to refuse. "Alright."

When they got home, the servants hadn't gone to bed and were about to cook something for them.

Pearl sent the servants and security to rest and went to cook herself.

Although Pearl's attitude towards him had changed, and she trusted him unconditionally without needing any explanation, he felt a bit anxious inside.

It was as if everything was a dream, with Pearl's busy figure in the kitchen resembling something he had fantasized about.

And that figure was becoming increasingly blurry.

Oscar didn't like this feeling. He walked over and tightly wrapped his arms around Pearl's waist.

He still preferred this sense of reality, with Pearl right by his side.
