Chapter 648 Speculation
Desiree woke up to Harold shaking her. She blinked her eyes open and saw his worried face.
"Harold, what are you doing here? My head is killing me," she groaned, clutching her head.
It felt like her brain was doing somersaults.
Trying to piece together what happened, Desiree realized she couldn't remember much, except for seeing a waiter.
Everything after that was a blur, and she had no clue how Harold found her.
She asked him about it, but he just gave her a complicated look.
He hesitated, like he wanted to say something but then decided against it. "You're not feeling well, so don't stress about it. It's morning, and the cruise ship is about to dock. Go pack up, and let's get out of here."
Seeing him dodge the question, Desiree felt like he was hiding something, but her head hurt too much to dig deeper.
So she let it go for now.
After they got off the cruise ship, Harold took her straight to the nearest hospital for a check-up.
His insistence felt a bit odd, but she didn't argue.
Luckily, the results came back fine.
"It's just a bit of anesthetic," the doctor said with a frown. "This stuff isn't good for pregnant women. How could you let this happen?"
"Anesthetic..."
Desiree was puzzled about when she could've inhaled it, then quickly defended Harold, "Doctor, you got it wrong. I must've inhaled it by accident."
The doctor gave her a look but didn't push it.
On the way back, Desiree couldn't hold it in anymore. "Harold, are you hiding something from me? Last night, I remember running out, but I woke up in the cabin, and you were so worried."
"It was Daryl's people who took you there," Harold admitted, knowing he couldn't keep it from her.
Desiree was shocked at first, then a memory she had almost forgotten flashed in her mind.
She remembered hearing a man's voice while she was out of it. It didn't sound like Harold's.
If it was Daryl, then it all made sense.
But that just made things more confusing. Why would he do this?
Seeing her deep in thought, Harold said, "Daryl's trouble. You should stay away from him."
"I know," Desiree frowned. "I just don't get why Bronte is helping him, and how he changed so much."
Even though she always said she and Daryl were just childhood friends, long in the past.
But their families were close, and Desiree remembered what Daryl was like as a kid, so she still thought of him as a friend and didn't guard against him.
She didn't expect him to take advantage of that, and the worst part was that Bronte, who had always been so nice to her, was involved too.
Finally, seeing it was getting late, Harold convinced her to go home.
Overwhelmed by everything, Desiree couldn't make sense of it all and just nodded.
After that, she started avoiding the Fields Family. Whether it was Bronte calling or Daryl sending stuff to her office. Desiree either made excuses to dodge them or didn't accept the things.
She also told Bronte straight up, "Bronte, I don't know why you weren't there that night. But I hope this is the last time, and please tell Daryl for me, I really don't want to deal with him anymore."
Bronte wanted to say more, but Desiree was too freaked out, so she just hung up.
After that call, Desiree kept a close eye on the front desk for a couple of days and even asked around.
The receptionist shook her head. "We haven't gotten any weird packages in the past two days."
"Good, keep an eye out, and if any show up, just toss them," Desiree said, feeling a bit more at ease as she gave the receptionist one last instruction before heading out.
With the packages stopping and no more drama from the Fields Family, she felt a lot more relaxed for a few days, thinking maybe they were done causing trouble.
But a few days later, she got to the office early and saw a bunch of employees huddled together.
"Do you think it's true?"
"Is our Ms. Sandvik really involved with Mr. Fields from Fields Corporation..."
"I think it must be true. Those photos are everywhere online. Poor Mr. Lewis."
"What are you all talking about?" Desiree's voice cut through the chatter.
Everyone jumped and quickly stood up, looking guilty.
A female employee smiled awkwardly. "Ms. Sandvik, why are you here so early today? You usually come in around eight or nine, right?"
Desiree was pregnant, and Harold didn't want her overworking, so she usually came in later in the morning.
She normally arrived after nine, but today she got up a bit earlier.
Thinking Harold had already gone to work and there was nothing to do at home, she decided to head to the office early, only to walk into these rumors.
And these rumors seemed to be about her.
"Answer my questions directly, no beating around the bush," Desiree said, her eyes narrowing.
The female employee was shocked, not expecting the usually chill Desiree to have this side.
"If you don't speak up, you can kiss your performance bonus goodbye this month," Desiree added.
"Ms. Sandvik, I'll talk! Please don't dock our bonuses," the female employee blurted out.
Desiree's threat worked.
They couldn't hold back, and soon one of them stammered, "We saw entertainment news on Twitter today, saying that you and Mr. Fields from Fields Corporation are close."
"When did I ever get close to him? There's nothing between us!" Desiree snapped.
"If you don't believe me, see for yourself." The female employee handed over her phone.
Desiree frowned.
She thought it was nothing until she saw the trending topic, with her blood running cold.
She was stunned for a couple of seconds, then opened one of the pictures.
In the picture, she was lying on a bed, her clothes a mess. The angle of the shot didn't show her full face, just a side profile, making it even more suggestive, which added a lot of credibility to the photo.
In the comments, people were speculating if the photo was taken without her knowing.
The user who posted the photos had a big following and didn't respond to the speculations but cryptically said, "Walls have ears."
Desiree's fingers trembled, making her almost drop the phone.
A rush of blood went to her head, and she swayed like she might faint, scaring the employees around her.
