Chapter 477 Live Well
Barbara didn't answer right away.
She'd never seen Pearl beg like this, with tears streaming down her face and her eyes all puffy.
Even though Barbara felt awful, she could only croak out, "Pearl, only Mr. Brown knows where the child is."
Oscar's obituary was already out.
Despite her doubts, after searching for days, they still hadn't found any sign of Oscar.
Without him, no one knew where the child was. It was torture for her too.
Pearl couldn't hold back and started sobbing. "Barbara, is this true? Don't lie to me. I just want to see my child."
By the end, Pearl was a mess of tears.
Barbara felt even worse. She hugged Pearl, gently patting her back. "Pearl, I'm not lying. As long as there's life, there's hope. Maybe Mr. Brown planned for the child to meet you later."
It was all she could say.
Even if it was a lie, it was a white one.
At least this way, Pearl could keep going.
Pearl wiped her tears, thinking Oscar must have planned everything.
Pearl nodded. "Yeah, you're right. I need to be strong and to survive. I need to see my child!"
"Barbara, you've had it rough too."
Pearl's breakdown was brief, and she quickly regained her composure.
She hadn't forgotten that Barbara had pushed her away to protect her, and when Barbara was rescued, she was covered in wounds and had lost her memory.
Haley had also tortured Barbara terribly.
Pearl felt it was all her fault.
When she saw Barbara, she wanted to apologize, but Barbara didn't remember the past and only felt a vague familiarity.
So she stayed by Barbara's side.
She believed Barbara would remember one day.
Finally, that day had come.
"Pearl, what are you talking about? You don't owe me anything. I should feel guilty. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have suffered from the poison for so long."
At the time, she was following Donald and had no idea about Pearl's true identity, that she was actually Carol.
When she found out later, she did everything she could to make up for it.
"Barbara, you didn't know about the past, and it's over now. You should see the medic and get checked out. I'm fine."
Pearl's breath hitched when she mentioned her own condition.
She was exhausted and hadn't eaten much lately. Saying she was fine was just putting on a brave face.
Barbara saw Jeffery nearby and said softly, "I'll go see the medic. When I come back, I'll bring you some food."
"Okay," Pearl agreed, and then it was just her and Jeffery in the tent.
Jeffery had been by her side this whole time.
Pearl smiled slowly. "Jeffery, thanks for staying with me. With the war here, I plan to stay a bit longer and then head back to Willow Creek."
She still clung to hope, believing Oscar wasn't dead and would come back.
She'd stay a bit longer, and if nothing changed, she'd head back to Willow Creek to manage the Brown Group with Harold.
"Are you trying to get rid of me?" Jeffery asked, understanding the meaning behind Pearl's words. His voice was hoarse and sad.
Pearl was quiet for a few seconds, then smiled. "Jeffery, nothing lasts forever. We both have our own paths. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't be here."
Jeffery had his own plans, but they changed because of her.
"Yeah, if it weren't for your situation, I wouldn't be here. But Pearl, I just want to do something for you, to feel a bit more valuable."
Jeffery sat in front of Pearl, his eyes full of determination.
Pearl understood, but her heart was with Oscar. With him missing, she couldn't think of anyone else.
Pearl pretended not to notice. "Jeffery, focus on your own stuff. I know you think being an experimental subject makes you useful to me."
"Pearl, I know it's not the right time, but I have to say it. If I don't, you'll never know how I feel. Pearl, I like you."
Pearl had said she was Pearl, not Carol. She didn't like being called Carol, and Jeffery respected that as he confessed.
Pearl stayed silent.
Jeffery's eyes were tender, even a bit sad.
He continued, "Pearl, I'm willing to stay by your side and take care of you. Whenever you turn around, I'll be there."
Pearl's throat tightened.
She knew how good Jeffery was, but her heart belonged to Oscar. She'd been with Oscar for seven years and admired him for so long. Her heart couldn't hold anyone else.
Pearl shook her head. "I get what you mean. But whether Oscar is dead or alive, whether he comes back or not, I won't love anyone else."
This was certain.
Jeffery didn't push further. He knew he couldn't force her.
But he was also certain he'd stay by Pearl's side to protect her.
Pearl was very tired and wanted to sleep for a while.
Jeffery saw her exhaustion and said softly, "If you want to sleep, go ahead. If anything comes up, I'll wake you."
"Thank you." Pearl closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep.
She saw Oscar with his back to her.
He was tall, but his clothes were tattered.
Within seconds, Oscar turned around, but he had no facial features, startling Pearl.
She reached out, wanting to touch him.
But Oscar grabbed her hand. His voice was destroyed. He said, "Pearl, stop looking for me. I will never come back."
"Then what am I to you? You've arranged everything, and now you're just leaving me behind. What do I mean to you?" Pearl couldn't control her emotions and shouted, breaking down.
Oscar caressed her cheek. "Pearl, I'm protecting you. In my heart, you are always the only one. I love you, and I can't bear to let you take risks. Now, you need to live well."
