Chapter 406 Disfigurement

July, scared for her safety, held on tight. "Ms. Harris, you see what's happening. Going back is suicide!"

Pearl asked, "But what about Barbara?"

July and Guadalupe held her firmly.

"Barbara's skilled; she'll manage. It's not just you and Barbara; it's all of us. If this keeps up, we're all in danger!"

They wanted her, not Barbara.

Just as she thought, she was valuable to The Crimson Eclipse Society. Why else would they capture her? Even if caught, they probably wouldn't kill her right away. This was a chance. Maybe she could infiltrate The Crimson Eclipse Society again, like before.

Barbara was different. Now that she was a traitor, she was likely to die. Pearl looked at them; she couldn't let them all be in danger.

"You guys go first," Pearl said. "I have a plan."

If her guess was right, she knew what to do. She had to take a gamble.

Seeing Pearl determined to go back, July got more anxious. Without thinking, she knocked Pearl out. Then she and Guadalupe quickly carried her down the stairs and escaped through the back door. They hailed a taxi to avoid being chased.

Guadalupe, being a local, quickly gave the driver a location. July understood Guadalupe's urgency.

Guadalupe kept shouting, "Hurry up!"

Barbara was still worried about Pearl's safety. She had arranged an escape route for Pearl. July should be with Pearl; she'd be a good helper. With two people by her side, Pearl should be fine. At a critical moment, Pearl was taken away; she wasn't affected.

Barbara felt dizzy, the smell of blood strong in her nose. As soon as she regained consciousness, she tried to get up. But before she could, a heavy force pinned her to the ground. She couldn't move.

The next second, someone flipped her over. In front of her were a dozen men with sophisticated weapons. Dennis held a photo, scrutinizing it before barking, "Why are you alone? Where's Pearl?"

"If you tell us where Pearl is, Ms. Mitchell will make it worth your while. And RavenWing's reward is separate."

Dennis wore a mask, hiding his face. Barbara, curious, said, "Who is Ms. Mitchell? I want to see her."

"Take her away!" Dennis ordered, and Barbara was pulled up. The recent explosion had drained her energy. She was dragged and carried. Throughout the journey, Barbara didn't dare to sleep. She feared if she closed her eyes, she might never wake up again.

She had no idea how much time had passed. From being dragged into the vehicle, enduring the bumpy ride, to when it finally stopped.

They pulled her out like cargo. After a few more minutes of dragging, they stopped and threw her into a room.

Exhausted, she saw Carol with her back turned. When Carol faced her, she was wrapped in heavy bandages, only her eyes showing, the look in which felt oddly familiar.

"Barbara, I didn't expect you to come again," Carol said, her voice rough and altered by a voice changer.

Barbara shivered, her eyes cold. "Who are you? What do you want?"

Carol's face was hidden by bandages, making her features unrecognizable. Seeing Barbara's shock, Carol laughed. "You don't need to know who I am. Worry about yourself. You're already a traitor. But if you bring Pearl to me, I can forgive your past."

Carol's gaze was imperious, like a queen. Barbara didn't like it. She was resolute. "You'll never get Pearl's whereabouts from me!"

"If you don't tell me, I'll make you wish you were dead!" Carol threatened, stepping closer. The ruthlessness in her eyes made Barbara realize the impending torment.

But Barbara had promised Jeffery to protect Pearl and vowed to Oscar to be a good person. She had faced death once and wasn't afraid.

Barbara sneered. "Then you might as well kill me."

Carol waved her hand. "Take her away and treat her well!"

Carol was determined to break Barbara's stubbornness.

Pearl woke up, feeling dizzy. She saw a small patch of sky surrounded by woods. She was leaning against a tree, with no sign of July or Guadalupe.

Given the situation, abandoning her was the right choice. The fact she was unharmed was a blessing. But now, she had to find Barbara.

She took out her phone but had no signal. She couldn't contact anyone. Looking at the dark forest ahead, she kept moving forward.

The further she walked, the darker it got. She glanced at her phone and realized she had been walking for half an hour. The humidity was oppressive, and she was drenched in sweat.

She didn't know how long she had walked. Then, she saw a village. Feeling a surge of joy, she headed towards it. But just as she did, a massive explosion echoed through the air.
