Chapter 682 Let's Go for a Walk
After Desiree and Daryl headed downstairs, they found Tessa chilling on the living room couch, watching TV.
"Hey, Mrs. Sandvik," Daryl greeted with a smile.
Tessa looked up, clearly pleased with him. But when her eyes landed on Desiree, concern washed over her face. "Desiree, did you stay up all night?"
It made sense, considering how much Desiree and Harold had loved each other.
Now that they were splitting up, she must be feeling awful. But Tessa knew dragging out the pain was worse. Even though she felt bad for Desiree, she couldn't let her get back with Harold just because she was feeling vulnerable.
"No, I just forgot to close the window last night and got woken up by the cold, so I didn't sleep well," Desiree fibbed to keep Tessa from worrying.
But moms always knew.
Tessa saw right through it but didn't push. "It's the weekend. You two should go out and have some fun. And grab some skincare stuff for me while you're at it."
"Sure thing," Daryl agreed right away.
He knew how to keep Tessa happy and soon had her laughing.
She glanced at the clock on the wall. "Alright, you two don't need to hang around here. Go enjoy yourselves."
Desiree couldn't say no to Tessa.
Ever since she came back home, Tessa's eyes had been filled with unspoken sadness now and then.
It was her fault for not handling things better, making Tessa worry.
Now that Daryl could cheer her up and was willing to play along, Desiree didn't want to be a downer. "Mom, we'll head out now. I'll be back early for dinner."
"You don't have to rush back for dinner. Your dad and I have gotten used to our alone time over the years. Since you came back, we haven't had that. Why don't you two stay out tonight, and we'll enjoy our time at home? That way, everyone will be happy," Tessa said sincerely.
She and Liam had also had a business marriage, but over the years, their feelings for each other had grown strong.
So she hoped Desiree could find the same happiness.
"Let's go. The morning rush is over, so we won't hit traffic if we leave now," Daryl said, taking Desiree's hand.
In front of Tessa, they left hand in hand. Once outside the villa, Desiree quickly let go of his hand.
Daryl's eyes showed a flicker of disappointment, but he didn't say anything.
He walked to the car and opened the passenger door. "Desiree, I don't know what brand of skincare products Mrs. Sandvik uses. Do you?"
"Of course I do. My mom's been using the same brand for years." Desiree intended to sit in the back seat.
But since the passenger door was already open, it felt awkward to close it, so she sat in the front.
Once she was seated, Daryl leaned in to fasten her seatbelt.
Startled, Desiree quickly said, "I can do it myself. You don't need to treat me like a kid."
"Sorry, I just really like kids. I was taking care of my cousin's daughter a few days ago and got used to it," Daryl said with a smile, closing the door and walking around to the driver's seat.
Desiree stayed quiet, her head down.
She loved kids too. When she first found out she was pregnant, she was over the moon.
But then what happened?
The baby was gone, her beloved husband was gone, and the happiness she once had felt like a distant dream.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring up something painful. It's my fault. " Daryl started to panic and slapped himself.
He was about to do it again when Desiree grabbed his hand and shook her head. "Don't do that. I'm not blaming you. It's not your fault."
After all, it wasn't Daryl who caused her miscarriage.
And it wasn't fair to expect everyone to avoid mentioning kids just because she lost hers.
"But I don't want to upset you. Desiree, if you're feeling bad, take it out on me. I'll be your punching bag," Daryl said, looking genuinely concerned.
Desiree unlocked her phone, intending to check the time.
But she saw a flood of messages, all from Harold.
She didn't want to read any of them. She deleted them all.
Daryl glanced at her phone.
Though he couldn't see the words clearly, he could guess who would send her long messages at this time.
It had to be Harold.
Things had changed. Since Desiree's miscarriage, Harold was no longer a match for him.
He could tell that Desiree still cared deeply about the lost child.
There was a life between them, and with Ember's interference, the chances of their reconciliation were slim.
"Desiree, let's get going. Let's have a good day out," Daryl said, stepping on the gas.
Meanwhile, Harold kept checking his phone after sending the messages, but no reply came.
The messages seemed to have vanished into thin air.
"Harold, stop staring at your phone. Can't you spend some time on your mom? She's so sick, staying in the hospital every day, and you're still glued to your phone?" Hermione snatched his phone away.
Everyone in the ward could guess that the only person who could make Harold so distraught was Desiree.
Harold frowned. "Hermione, give me my phone back."
"I'm not giving it back. You just want to contact that shameless woman. She treated you bad, and you still haven't woken up?" Hermione hid the phone behind her back, fuming. "Do you know what you look like? Pathetically trying to please her. She has already cheated on you."
She muttered the last sentence under her breath.
But the ward was small, and everyone was quiet. Only she was muttering, so Harold heard her clearly.
His face turned grim.
