Chapter 405 Dead or Alive We Must Find Her
Pearl was still groggy when she caught the smell of grilled meat.
She opened her eyes to see dawn breaking.
It was just past 5 a.m.
Feeling the chill, Pearl wrapped her arms around herself as she stepped out of the tent. Everyone was already up.
Guadalupe pointed to the fire, whereMeat was still roasting over it.
July translated, "You didn't eat last night. You should eat something now; we're leaving soon."
Pearl had no appetite.
She had a nagging doubt.
She wasn't just looking for Adrian; she might be connected to The Crimson Eclipse Society. How else would she know about the secret room mechanism?
Maybe she had escaped from The Crimson Eclipse Society, the only one who hadn't killed anyone.
Kevin's reaction was odd, like he saw someone else in her.
There might be a big secret on her.
Only she could uncover it.
She knew this trip was risky, but if she didn't face it, she'd be stuck in mystery forever.
Someone was after her, so she had to go on the offensive.
Looking at Barbara, she felt guilty. "I'm sorry."
Barbara was surprised. "Why are you apologizing? You haven't done anything to me."
Pearl said, "I didn't expect things to be this bad. In a modern society, this still happens. I wasn't aware, and now you're suffering with me."
She grew up comfortably, not rich, but never struggling.
Leaving her country made her realize how sheltered she was.
Barbara smiled. "I can handle it. Compared to my past, this is nothing. At least my life is exciting. Don't overthink it. I don't have family; I've long considered you my family. Besides—"
Pearl saw her hesitate. "Besides what?"
Barbara poked at the fire. "Even if you didn't come, I would have. I'm a special forces soldier now. This is my mission too."
Pearl joked, "You have a strong sense of mission."
"I think so," Barbara said. "It's strange; I never felt this way before, but once I got the title, I felt responsible. I also want to be a hero."
Barbara leaned against Pearl, holding her hand. "Do you think if I hadn't joined The Crimson Eclipse Society, I would have become a soldier? My life could have been different."
Pearl squeezed her hand. "You would. You're brave; you'll achieve great things."
Barbara laughed.
"What are you doing?" Pearl asked, thinking she was being laughed at.
Barbara couldn't stop laughing. When she finally calmed down, she said, "It's just funny how serious you were. But I agree. If my life hadn't started with The Crimson Eclipse Society, I'd definitely be someone who loves life."
Pearl said, "It's not too late, Barbara. You'll achieve great things."
Barbara felt confident with Pearl's support.
Barbara's first task was to teach Pearl how to fight. The second was to head to the battlefield. She had the same goal as Pearl: to destroy this harmful place.
As they chatted, a commotion broke out.
A dozen masked men with weapons burst in and started shooting.
Barbara's face changed. She grabbed Pearl and ran upstairs. Guadalupe held Alejandro, and July followed. The scene was chaotic.
"Mr. McDonald, someone ran upstairs."
Dennis McDonald gestured, and they headed upstairs. He coldly said, "Alive or dead, bring me Pearl's body. Ms. Mitchell and RavenWing will reward us handsomely!"
"Yes, sir," a dozen voices responded in unison.
The sound was deafening, making Barbara's scalp tingle.
'RavenWing was looking for Pearl! What was going on? Was it because of the poison in Pearl's body? No, the poison was cured. And we just came out of the desert. How did RavenWing's people find us so accurately? Or was there a traitor among us?'
Barbara tightly held Pearl's hand. "Pearl, take off your clothes. We'll switch. I'll go east, you go west!"
Guadalupe kept talking.
July said, "Ms. Harris, Guadalupe wants you to follow her. She says she can take you back to her tribe. Her people will thank you and help you find who you're looking for!"
"July, go with them. I'll hide here. Pearl, hurry up. There's no time!" Barbara shouted.
"What about you if I leave?" Pearl asked.
Barbara said, "Don't worry. I won't die. I've been through this many times."
Pearl hadn't expected things to be so chaotic, far beyond her understanding.
"No, I can't leave you," Pearl said, unable to let her go.
A loud bang was followed by a wave of heat, and Pearl felt herself being thrown by a force.
July and Guadalupe each grabbed one of her hands and quickly pulled her through a half-broken iron door.
The room inside was pitch black, but suddenly a warm orange light flickered on.
Pearl's thoughts were consumed by Barbara, but she couldn't see her anywhere. Her heart pounded, and she yearned to go back and find her.
