Chapter 604 Using One's Own Tactics Against Them
Oscar called Quincy and quickly filled him in, telling the driver to step on it.
Damian looked like he was carrying the weight of the world. He kept glancing at Pearl, wanting to hold Janetta himself, but he just couldn't bring himself to do it. Instead, he just stared at her, his eyes getting darker by the minute.
Oscar noticed but didn't pry. He had no clue what had gone down. Damian wasn't talking, and Oscar figured it wasn't the right time to push for answers. Besides, whatever Damian said right now might not even be the truth.
When they finally got to the hospital, Quincy was already there.
Before Oscar could say anything, Pearl grabbed Quincy's hands. "Quincy, you have to save my friend, no matter what."
Oscar gently pulled her aside and tried to calm her down. "I told him, Janetta's really important. He'll do everything he can."
"I can't live without Janetta," Pearl sobbed uncontrollably.
Oscar hugged her and nodded at Quincy.
Just as Quincy was about to head into the emergency room, Damian stopped him. "Got something to say?" Quincy asked.
"Whatever it takes, save her. Money's not an issue," Damian pleaded.
Quincy gave Damian a cold look and walked straight into the operating room without a word.
The light above the door flicked on, and everyone tensed up.
Pearl stared at the blood on her hands, then suddenly looked up at Damian. "Why did this happen to her?"
Damian stayed silent.
Pearl's mind raced to the worst possible scenarios, her heart breaking for Janetta.
She rushed up to Damian, demanding again, "Why did this happen to Janetta?"
Damian glanced at Oscar, then looked down, still silent. His silence felt like an admission of guilt.
Pearl screamed in anger and tried to go after Damian, but Oscar held her back just in time.
"It was him! He hurt Janetta! I want to make him pay!" Pearl was losing it, and Oscar knew this wasn't good for her or the baby.
He had no choice but to carry her into the elevator. As it slowly descended, he finally set her down.
They stood there in silence, and Oscar wiped her tears, looking pained.
"I should've come sooner. If I had, this wouldn't have happened," Pearl said, her heart aching for Janetta.
She blamed herself. She knew something was up when Janetta borrowed money but didn't act on it.
She could've sent someone to check on her at the hotel, could've found out what was going on sooner.
The more she thought about it, the more she blamed herself, and the tears kept coming.
Oscar saw her pain but didn't know how to make it better.
Only Janetta waking up could ease Pearl's guilt.
Suddenly, Pearl frowned.
Oscar noticed and asked, "What's wrong?"
Pearl shook her head but instinctively touched her belly.
Oscar didn't miss that and decided to get her checked out right away.
The baby couldn't be at risk, and neither could Pearl.
The doctor wrote a note, and Oscar took Pearl to wait outside the prenatal exam room while he went to pay.
Pearl was feeling down, her mind stuck on Janetta lying there unconscious.
"Pearl Brown, it's your turn," the nurse called.
Pearl walked into the prenatal exam room like a zombie, not even realizing Oscar had the slip.
Once inside, she didn't wait for the instructions and just took off her shoes, lying down on the bed.
Then she sensed something and glanced to the side, just in time to see a woman walking out. The woman gave her a weird look and wasn't even pregnant. It was odd for a non-pregnant woman to be in there.
Just then, a broadcast outside announced it wasn't her turn yet.
Pearl quickly got off the bed, put her shoes back on, and heard someone at the door say, "That's her. The woman said if we bring Pearl to her, she'd give us twenty grand."
Someone else hesitated. "Can we trust her?"
"Why not? She said she's Alfonso's lover. I checked, and the Brown Group does have a president named Alfonso, and he's from the Brown Family."
Hearing Alfonso's name, Pearl thought of his mistress who had come to her before.
She smiled slightly, adjusted her emotions, and lay back on the bed, but she didn't forget she was pregnant and had to protect the baby.
After a bit, the same woman who had just left came back in. "Mrs. Brown, Mr. Brown specifically instructed us to give you special treatment. Please follow us to another prenatal exam room."
The woman's words were professional. If Pearl hadn't overheard the earlier conversation, she might have believed her. Hospitals had their own rules, and special requests were common.
But Pearl knew it was all lies. They wanted to take her to that woman.
She didn't ask more questions, put on her shoes, and followed the woman out of the exam room.
The woman led her down another elevator, avoiding Oscar, and hurried along.
Anyone paying attention would notice something was off, especially since Pearl already knew their plan.
"Slow down. I'm pregnant and can't walk fast," said Pearl.
Pearl really couldn't keep up; she had to be careful for the baby's sake.
The woman slowed down a bit, winding through several buildings, including the inpatient department, and finally arriving at the hospital's side door.
Pearl stopped and asked, "This isn't the way to the prenatal exam room. Where are you taking me?"
"Mrs. Brown, our hospital has another VIP prenatal exam room, but it's across the street." The woman thought she could fool Pearl and pulled her through the side door towards the opposite side.
Pearl quietly texted Oscar and followed her, pretending to trust her.
Across the street was a commercial building, but the floors above the fifth were abandoned.
Pearl was taken to the top floor and stood in front of a dilapidated door. She lowered her head and chuckled.
The woman was startled and quickly opened the door, pushing her inside. "Hurry in, it's not good if someone sees."
Upon walking in, Pearl saw Alfonso's mistress sitting on a worn-out sofa, which made her unable to resist laughing.
"What are you laughing at?" Alfonso's mistress asked, clearly puzzled.
Pearl didn't answer. After looking around, she chose a relatively intact chair and sat down. After walking so much, she was tired.
"What are you laughing at?" The woman was getting angry.
Pearl looked at the woman who had led her and asked with a smile, "There should be another person with you. Why didn't you bring her along?"
Now they realized Pearl had seen through their plan all along, but they didn't panic.
