Chapter 472 Reunion
"This isn't my call," Pearl said quietly, her voice rough, lips pressed tight.
She knew what Jeffery was thinking but saw him as a friend.
"Then I'll talk to Oscar," Jeffery said seriously, waving to Pearl before heading off.
He found Oscar in a tent, studying a map in his military uniform, looking very different from Jeffery. No wonder Pearl was drawn to him.
After a pause, Jeffery approached Oscar. "Pearl's not okay, you know?"
Oscar stopped what he was doing, put down his pen, and looked at Jeffery. His eyes said it all.
"Seems you know," Jeffery said.
"Yeah," Oscar finally replied.
"She's traumatized from the slave camp, empathizing so much she thinks others' pain is her own. Oscar, I can't leave her like this," Jeffery said, eyes determined.
Oscar understood Jeffery's concern and knew Pearl's feelings. But seeing Jeffery so worried about Pearl felt like a weight on his chest.
"I know you're uncomfortable. But I won't mess with your relationship. You know my role," Jeffery said, his voice low and raspy, eyes fixed on Oscar.
Before Oscar could respond, Nicholas appeared at the tent entrance. "Mr. Brown, Louis and RavenWing are here."
They came to see Pearl, and Oscar couldn't stop them because of their family ties. But he had to give Pearl a head-up.
"We'll talk later. I need to find Pearl. Nicholas, have them wait," Oscar said.
"Yes," Nicholas replied, leaving.
Oscar walked out, leaving Jeffery alone. Watching Oscar leave, Jeffery felt a heavy weight on his heart, like an invisible hand squeezing it. His blood felt like it was flowing backward, making it hard to breathe.
He was the one who met Pearl first, and she had given him something important. But it was Oscar who stayed by her side and won her heart.
Oscar found Pearl sitting alone with wildflowers in front of her. Barbara had picked them. Even though Barbara had no memory and had only been with Pearl for a few days, she already saw Pearl as family.
Pearl was sniffing the flowers when Oscar approached, his eyes full of gentle affection.
"It's a shame I don't have my phone," Oscar said. "I'd love to take some pictures of you."
He finally got why people loved taking photos—to capture beautiful moments.
Pearl laughed. "Given everything we've been through, my perspective has totally changed."
She used to follow Oscar as his secretary, hiding their relationship. Now, she didn't care about taking pictures.
Oscar smiled and sat next to her, pulling her into his arms. "Pearl, I know I've let you down. I'm just trying to finish these important things so we can be together forever."
"I know," Pearl said, leaning into him as they watched the sunset.
Oscar gently stroked her head. "Louis and RavenWing are here. There's been a huge change in Eldoria; the slave camps are gone. Louis is in charge now, and RavenWing has stepped down. The one pretending to be Carol..."
"Is Haley, right?" Pearl interrupted with a light laugh.
Oscar was surprised. "When did you figure it out?"
"When things started to connect," Pearl said. "Carol was brought back by Kevin, and Haley is Kevin's daughter."
"Actually, Haley is Hathaway's daughter. Kevin and Hathaway just had some dealings."
Pearl was shocked. She thought Haley was Kevin and Hathaway's daughter, but Oscar clarified she was just Hathaway's.
"Haley is dead," Oscar added.
Pearl was stunned. "What? When did this happen?"
"When Kevin started the rebellion, and you and Jeffery escaped," Oscar explained.
Pearl was silent for a moment. "I thought you would have spared her."
Even if Oscar didn't, she thought Kevin would. She didn't expect Kevin couldn't save Haley either. Haley had influenced her a lot.
"Go see Louis and RavenWing. You're his daughter, and that won't change," Oscar said. He believed some things needed to be addressed face to face. Pearl didn't want to see them, but she had no choice.
"Let's go. I'll go with you to see them," Pearl said, standing up.
They headed to the tent where Louis and RavenWing were. Louis looked the same, but RavenWing wasn't wearing a mask. Despite a long scar on his face, his gaze was exceptionally gentle.
