Chapter 740 Changing Ideas

"That's not how it works. Even if the treatment doesn't completely cure you, it'll at least ease the pain and give you more time. You know medicine, don't you get that?" Pearl said, her tone serious.

As RavenWing's daughter, Pearl had a pretty good idea of what was bothering him.

She asked bluntly, "Are you worried that chemo will make you lose your hair and look bad, so you don't want to do it?"

RavenWing nodded.

He hoped to leave this world with dignity, rather than becoming a shadow of his former self.

He didn’t want to frighten Emily and Christopher when the time finally came.

"You're not in your twenties anymore, why are you so hung up on your looks?" Pearl said, half amused, half exasperated. "Losing some hair isn't the end of the world. Older folks lose hair all the time. Look at the old guys on the street; lots of them are healthy but barely have any hair."

"Losing some hair and going completely bald are two different things," RavenWing said, instinctively touching his head.

He had already lost quite a bit of hair. If he went completely bald, wouldn't that be awful?

Besides, chemo had more side effects than just hair loss. His body would react in all sorts of ways.

Pearl said, "Are you really okay with Emily and Christopher losing their grandpa? They don't have grandparents like other kids. Besides their parents, it's just you who cares about them. If something happens to you, what will they do? You know how much they love you."

She pleaded, "I want you to live well, even if it's just for another year or so. Every extra day counts."

"Do you really want me to live?" RavenWing looked up at Pearl.

The person he owed the most in his life was Pearl. Hearing her say this made him feel it was worth it, even if he died now.

Hearing this, Pearl nodded. "From the moment I called, I could tell something was wrong. If I didn't care about you, I could have ignored it. Why go through all this trouble? I'm a mom, but I'm still your daughter. I don't want to lose you so soon," she said.

Hearing this, RavenWing fell silent.

He had been ready to give up treatment, but who really wanted to face death if they could live well?

Besides, Pearl's words had completely dispelled his worries.

RavenWing asked, "If I become haggard and ugly because of chemo, will you still bring Emily and Christopher to see me?"

"Of course, I will. We come to see you not because of how you look, but because we're family. We have a bond, and you treat us so well. Chemo can't change that," Pearl said, holding his hand.

She added, "Please take good care of yourself for me, and for Louis and Jimena. Their baby is going to be born soon, and whether it's a grandson or granddaughter, you need to see them in person."

These words struck a chord with RavenWing.

Yeah, if he gave up so easily, it would be over for him, but it wouldn't be fair to his kids.

Thinking of this, he told Pearl, "Don't worry. I will definitely cooperate with the doctors' treatment from now on. I want to beat the odds and live longer than any other late-stage cancer patient."Hearing this, Pearl smiled and nodded.

She then got up and called the attending doctor, asking in detail about RavenWing's condition. "My dad has come around. He wants to go ahead with the treatment," she said.

"That's great news. We've been trying to convince him, but it didn't work. Sometimes it takes the family to make a difference," the doctor said.

Rather than watching a life slip away, he preferred to save it through his efforts.

After discussing the treatment plan, Pearl talked with RavenWing for a while before leaving.

When she got home, she immediately called Louis on a video call.

It took him a while to answer. Seeing his weary face, Pearl felt a surge of worry. "Are you overwhelmed with work?" she asked.

"Yeah, I only realize the pressure when I'm in this position," Louis smiled bitterly.

Although Jimena's miscarriage was partly due to the quality of the embryo, he couldn't help but think that if they weren't so busy but had more rest, maybe the baby would have been fine.

Now they had lost the baby, and Jimena was in the hospital recovering, needing him the most.

But Louis couldn't be there with her.

He still had a lot of work to do. Today’s tasks were finished, but tomorrow’s tasks awaited him. He had to fulfill his duties and couldn’t just leave these official tasks behind.

Hearing his words, Pearl said, "No matter what, you need to balance work and rest. Don't wear yourself out. How's Jimena?"

Louis's face grew more pained at the mention of Jimena.

Seeing this, Pearl had a bad feeling.

She desperately hoped she was wrong.

"Jimena's in the hospital. We lost our baby." Louis's eyes welled up as he spoke.

Pearl was stunned and asked, "How did this happen?"

Louis replied, "I don't understand either. We haven't done anything wrong. Why did this happen to our baby? It was a natural miscarriage. I returned from a meeting to find her collapsed. By the time we reached the hospital, we had lost the baby."

Reflecting on that day, Louis still couldn't come to terms with it. Jimena had bled so much, filling the trash can with blood-soaked gauze.

He was heartbroken, but felt powerless, forced to stand by and watch.

Now he was alone in the office, working, leaving her in the hospital. He felt like a failure as a husband and father.

Pearl wanted to comfort him, but at that moment, words felt so powerless. "First, let's focus on her recovery. There will be more chances for children in the future."

"We're not considering it for the next couple of years. We're too busy. Even if we had a child, we wouldn't have time to care for them. Leaving the child with a nanny wouldn't sit well with us," Louis said. Yet he didn't say the rest. In addition to this issue, they were also concerned that if the miscarriage was due to a physical problem, it could happen again.

If they kept losing babies, it would only harm Jimena's body.

Louis didn't want her to suffer. He thought that living as they were now was good enough.
