Chapter 228 New Developments
The sudden noise jolted Chloe. "Mr. Brown."
Oscar's cold eyes locked onto her. "I'll ask again Where is Pearl?"
Chloe glanced at the shattered wine glass on the floor, then back at Oscar's icy expression. She sobered up fast. She hadn't expected him to be so ruthless, breaking a glass just because he was upset.
Seeing Oscar stand up with that terrifying look, Chloe quickly said, "Pearl isn't here. It's just you and me."
Oscar's eyes grew even darker. "The message she sent me was to set up the meeting for you?"
"Yes," Chloe, puzzled by his intense reaction, asked again. "Pearl is a former employee of the Brown Group. I couldn't get an appointment with you, Mr. Brown, so I asked Pearl to help. If she could get you to come out, I could discuss cooperation with you. Actually, Pearl and I..."
"Get out!" Oscar's anger flared, his voice sharp.
Chloe turned pale with fear. "Mr. Brown, I'm not lying to you. Pearl and I are colleagues."
With a resounding crash, Oscar overturned the table.
Chloe was completely shocked, too frightened to utter another word.
She feared that if she said anything more, Oscar might actually hit her.
She didn't know much about Oscar, but compared to others, he was much more volatile when angry.
She had thought she could handle it with a meal and some drinks. But Oscar wouldn't even drink with her.
Oscar was furious. He hadn't expected Pearl's initiative to be a setup to meet Chloe.
He had thought Pearl was ready to apologize and mend their relationship.
Clearly, he had overestimated her!
Oscar stormed out, leaving Chloe, whose legs were nearly giving out, standing amidst the mess, still in shock.
Harold saw Oscar coming out with such a dark expression and thought he must have had another argument with Pearl. But Harold didn't dare say a word. Instead, he opened the car door for Oscar and quickly got in.
Oscar tugged at his tie, his face dark as night, and ordered sternly, "Find Pearl immediately!"
Upon hearing this, Harold realized Oscar hadn't seen Pearl. He quickly made a call to inquire about Pearl's whereabouts and then said, "Mr. Brown, Mrs. Brown is currently heading towards the orphanage."
Oscar's eyes turned cold. "Go to the orphanage!"
Pearl had already arrived at the orphanage.
Several cars were parked at the entrance. She got out of the car and saw a man in a suit, greeting him warmly, "Elliott!"
Elliott turned around. "Pearl, hello! Long time no see!"
He approached her quickly, extending his hand for a handshake.
Elliott and Pearl were former classmates, with a sunny and upright appearance. During their school days, Elliott was a basketball team member and was popular among the girls.
After graduation, he had taken over his parents' business, which had grown and gone public.
They had met a few times for work and exchanged contact information, but hadn't been in touch for a while.
Recently, Pearl had seen on his social media that Elliott was helping to promote agricultural products and was involved in charity work.
She had reached out to him to discuss the situation at the orphanage.
Elliott had happily agreed to help. Of course, it wasn't entirely selfless; Pearl worked in television and could offer enough exposure.
By ensuring the orphanage's affairs were well-managed, their brand would also receive significant visibility.
Pearl needed to keep Chloe occupied and used Oscar to divert her attention. Meanwhile, she had already arranged with Elliott to deliver a batch of supplies.
The supplies bore their company's brand, and Pearl had someone follow the entire process.
She had discussed it with Harper, who thought it was a great idea. Harper also mentioned that the orphanage could be featured in a new variety show. With more sponsorships and investors, it could potentially turn into a reality show focusing on child development.
Pearl's main goal was to give the orphanage kids a new sense of home.
Though she couldn't help every child in the world, she was committed to doing her best within her means.
"Thank you so much for this," Pearl said politely. "I asked for your help, and you agreed without hesitation. I don't even know how to express my gratitude."
"You're helping me too, so I should be thanking you," Elliott said as he led Pearl inside. "Don't worry. Leave this to me. The kids at the orphanage will be well taken care of."
As Pearl walked in, the children saw her and joyfully shouted, "Aunt Pearl!"
They all ran over.
"Aunt Pearl, we have meat to eat again!"
"Aunt Pearl, I even have a hair clip!"
They eagerly showed off what they had. Kids are innocent and easily satisfied; as long as they have food, drink, and shelter, they're happy.
"I see. From now on, you'll all have meat to eat and won't be malnourished anymore!" Pearl said to them.
"Thank you, Aunt Pearl!"
"Don't thank me. Thank him. He helped you," Pearl said.
"Thank you, sir." These kids were very polite and grateful, always remembering who was kind to them.
Elliott smiled and patted the children's heads.
Nova was busy, so she just briefly greeted Pearl and continued attending to the children.
"Aunt Pearl, where's Uncle Big Bad Wolf? Why didn't he come with you?" one child asked with wide eyes. "Why didn't he come with you?"
Pearl paused and then replied, "He's busy and doesn't have time right now. He'll come next time."
"Okay!"
"I know. Uncle Big Bad Wolf is your husband. He has to work hard to make money for you, so he's busy!"
The kids laughed happily again.
Pearl was speechless.
Elliott was a bit surprised and asked, "Is what they said true?"
"The kids are just talking nonsense. Don't believe everything they say," Pearl replied. "I'll have someone follow up with the filming."
She had brought a photographer along.
Elliott continued to chat with Pearl. "Weren't you at the Brown Group before? You stayed there for seven years after graduation, didn't you? Why did you quit and go to the TV station? That doesn't seem like something you would do."
He thought Pearl was someone who liked to hold on to the past. For her to stay at the Brown Group for so many years, the company must have treated her well. Moreover, being Oscar's secretary came with better perks than many other jobs. Moving to the TV station seemed like a step down.
Pearl paused for a moment. Answering such questions always made her feel a bit uncomfortable, reminding her of the past.
"You have to try new things," Pearl joked. "If I weren't at the TV station, I wouldn't have the chance to work with you."
Elliott laughed along. "You're right about that."
Pearl walked with the photographer, and Elliott followed behind her. She took notes with pen and paper, planning to include them in her report.
They happened to pass by a pile of slaughtered pigs, still bloody and in a bag, emitting a strong, fishy smell. Most people wouldn't be bothered by the smell. But as soon as Pearl smelled it, she felt an instant urge to vomit.
