Chapter 254 Payment for Sins

Jeffery grinned, the tear mole by his eye standing out. "This is what you wanted to know; I'm just being honest."

Pearl was skeptical. The space was unshaded, so she could see everything. Haley wasn't here, so she doubted him. "Why should I believe you?"

"I've got nothing to gain by lying." Jeffery pointed to the table. "Here's proof Haley came to me for help. Take a look."

Pearl examined the medical record.

Sure enough, Haley had sought his help.

Doctors couldn't cure her, but he could.

His skills were impressive.

He could make Haley lose her hearing and then restore it.

Everything checked out.

"Now that you know the truth, aren't you afraid it might cost you your life?" Jeffery had moved closer, his words hanging in the air.

Pearl looked up, feeling a bit panicked.

He was a mystery, and in his territory, she might not make it out alive.

Even though, she had been brave to follow him in.

She eyed the scalpel on the table, clenched her fists, and feared he might use it. "You must've gained a lot from helping Haley. I'll pay you double for this medical record. You won't lose anything, and there's no need for bloodshed. I value my life and hope you'll spare me and give me this chance!"

Jeffery leaned on the table, lowering himself, and spoke coldly. "One must not lose integrity."

Pearl tensed, watching his hand, fearing he might grab the scalpel.

Despite her nerves, she had to negotiate, clutching the medical record tightly. She wanted to clear Magdalen's name. "I..."

Jeffery chuckled softly.

Pearl was taken aback.

Jeffery moved away and sat across from her. "Actually, I've never been one to hold the integrity."

Pearl's heart tightened.

Whether he was honest or not, it didn't help her.

He was unpredictable, and she couldn't read his needs. He might betray her at any moment, making her want to stay far away.

"Can I really have this medical record?"

Pearl extended her hand. "I'll pay you this amount."

"Yes," Jeffery said. "I'm very willing to make this deal."

Pearl sighed in relief and quickly pocketed the medical record. "Great. I'll transfer the money now."

She took out her phone and transferred the money.

Then she left, not daring to stay any longer.

"Jeffery Gray!"

Just as Pearl turned to leave, Jeffery spoke.

Pearl stopped, hesitated, and looked back.

Jeffery's deep gaze was on her, and he smiled. "That's my name."

Pearl stared for a few seconds, seeing he wanted her to know his name.

She nodded. "Got it."

She hurried out.

Jeffery didn't move, just watched her until she was gone.

He tilted his head back and laughed.

In the empty room, his eerie laughter was chilling.

Pearl walked out, and as soon as she descended the stairs, someone grabbed her.

Already on edge, she swung her hands in defense.

"It's me!" Oscar caught her hands.

Pearl looked up and saw Oscar. "What are you doing here?"

Oscar's face was grim. "That's my question. You shouldn't be here!"

Pearl had the medical record in her pocket and couldn't let Oscar know. He might destroy it. "I came to see a friend."

"I don't believe you," Oscar retorted.

"What else could I be doing here?"

"You went to the fourth floor." Oscar's tone was harsh. "Do you know the consequences of entering a stranger's territory?"

"Now, you see, I am fine!"

Oscar frowned deeply. "Pearl, if something had happened, you could have lost your life. Do you realize how serious this is?"

Pearl looked at Oscar, wondering why he was here too.

'Could it be for the same reason as mine?'

Pearl wasn't sure. Their purposes might be different. Regardless, she had what she came for. She softened her tone. "I understand. I won't recklessly enter someone else's territory again."

Oscar's expression eased a bit. "I'll take you home."

He was here tracking Haley, but Pearl had gotten ahead of him, making it difficult for him to act.

Haley's situation was complicated, and no one knew if she was connected to that case.

He didn't want to alert anyone prematurely.

He had calculated the time. If Pearl hadn't come out in twenty minutes, he would have barged in to ensure her safety.

Unexpectedly, she came out in just a few minutes.

For now, he wouldn't worry about Haley. As long as Pearl was safe, that was a relief.

Oscar didn't press for details.

Pearl said, "Let's go to the hospital. Magdalen might have woken up."

"Alright," Oscar agreed.

--

Haley returned to Brown Manor.

Hathaway was pacing around. When she saw Haley return, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Haley, where did you go? You're not well, don't wander around. I'm afraid you're in danger."

"Why are you so wet?" Hathaway touched her shoulder, feeling the dampness of her clothes. "Did you get caught in the rain? Let me see. Don't get sick."

She touched Haley's forehead.

Haley's eyes focused on Hathaway, and she called out, "Hathaway."

Hathaway asked, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

Haley just looked at her, clenching her fists tightly. "Why are you so good to me now? Why weren't you good to me earlier?"

Hathaway's face stiffened. "What happened?"

Haley rested her head on Hathaway's shoulder, her gaze cold. "I didn't bring an umbrella and got caught in the rain."

"Go change your clothes quickly."

Haley nodded and went upstairs.

Hathaway watched Haley's back, a pitiful look flashed in her eyes.

She felt a deep sense of guilt towards Haley.

She wanted to make amends but didn't know where to start.

If only she hadn't made that one wrong decision, she wouldn't have to spend so much time trying to make things right now.

Hathaway wiped away her tears.

At that moment, Alfonso returned from outside.

She turned and saw Alfonso, immediately regaining her composure. "How dare you come back?"

Alfonso said coldly, "Don't think I don't know what you've done. You should pay for what you have done!"
