Chapter 683 A Chance Encounter

Harold and Desiree were head over heels for each other, always giving their all. How could it be pathetically trying to please her?

"Desiree's never done anything to hurt me. On the contrary, I'm the one who's wronged her. Mom, how can you do such a thing like drugging your son?" Harold glanced over at Ember lying in the hospital bed.

A wave of sorrow and helplessness washed over him.

He still couldn't forgive her for drugging him, but Ember was sick. As her son, he couldn't dredge up old grudges or abandon her when she was ill.

He had to bottle it all up inside, and it was eating him alive.

Hermione had no clue about the drugging. She turned to Ember, eyes wide with shock.

When she was asked to help, no one mentioned this.

Ember started coughing violently, and Isolde quickly stepped up to pat her back. "Mrs. Lewis, don't be angry. You need to rest."

"Isolde, you saw it yourself. It is he who intentionally provoked me to make me angry." Ember's eyes were locked on Harold.

Harold was at his breaking point. "Mom, if my being here just makes you angry, I'll leave. That way, you can focus on getting better."

He couldn't take it anymore. If this kept up, he was going to lose it.

Why did he have to end up with parents like this?

"Fine, leave now, and don't come back again. I worked hard to raise you, and now that I'm sick, you just see me as a burden. Even if I die, I won't call you. Do whatever you want, as long as you're happy." Ember's eyes welled up, "I can't be a teacher any more, I can't even teach my own son basic respect!"

Now, besides Harold, Hermione's face also looked uncomfortable.

This was blatant emotional blackmail.

She almost wanted to side with Harold, but she had taken so much money, and besides, Desiree really did mess up.

She could only keep backing Ember, "Harold, don't argue with your mom. Just go along with her wishes. At least wait until she's better."

Harold said nothing.

He just stood there looking at Ember, his eyes gradually moistening.

When Liam and Tessa looked down on him, he held a grudge, wanting to prove himself and show them he could give Desiree a good life.

Because his lover deserved the best in the world.

He could make money and buy Desiree anything she wanted, but he couldn't change Ember.

"Fine, you can leave, but help me buy something for Hermione. She came all the way from another state to see me. I should show some appreciation. You and Isolde can go together." Ember thought of another way to bring the two of them together. She had a reason for wanting them to go together. "Isolde and Hermione are about the same age, and they're both girls. They probably like the same things. Sorry to trouble you."

"It's okay. I'm happy to do it." Isolde shook her head.

She was thrilled to spend more time with Harold. How could she find it troublesome?

Hermione smiled awkwardly. "Harold, we do have a lot in common. She knows what I like."

Harold said nothing and silently turned to leave.

They had arranged everything. If he refused, he would be labeled unfilial, and Ember would refuse to take her medicine or get injections.

He didn't mind being called unfilial, but if Ember didn't get proper treatment, something serious could happen.

Isolde happily followed him.

On the way to the mall, she chattered non-stop, but Harold didn't respond at all.

He was just going through the motions.

On the first floor of the mall, there were many cosmetic counters. Isolde picked up two lipsticks and asked him, "Harold, which color do you think looks better?"

Harold glanced over. "Aren't they the same?"

"No, this one is tomato red, and this one is true red. They're different," Isolde explained.

"Aren't they both red?" Harold had no patience for her.

Then Isolde could only put the lipsticks down and continue looking for other things.

While trying on foundation, she inadvertently looked up and saw Desiree walking over with a stranger beside her.

With that, Isolde's eyes lit up with joy.

Great, Desiree was so fickle. She couldn't wait to find another man. Isolde had been worried about how to badmouth her in front of Harold, but now he could see for himself.

She hurriedly turned and grabbed Harold. "I've seen everything in this store. Let's go to the next one."

"So troublesome." Harold's patience was wearing thin.

He shook off her hand and walked out quickly. Isolde then hurried to catch up, grabbing his hand just before Desiree saw them.

Harold shook her off again. "Don't touch me."

Then he looked up and saw Desiree. His eyes instantly reddened, and he couldn't wait to walk over. "Desiree, let's talk."

"Mr. Lewis, you have your date, and I have mine. Why abandon your date to bother my woman?" Daryl taunted.

Seeing a rival in love made Harold's face darken. He reminded Daryl, "We haven't divorced yet."

Daryl didn't care at all and smiled. "But it's almost done, right? Next Monday, you go to court, and then you can get the divorce decree."

"Both of you, stop talking. I just want to be alone right now. Don't bother me." Desiree frowned.

She didn't like this childish tug-of-war at all.

Besides, she was a person, not an object to be fought over.

Daryl quickly went after her, but Harold was faster. He grabbed Desiree's wrist. "That day, my mom drugged me. What you saw happened because of the drugs."
