Chapter 288 Unexplained Sorrow

Donald locked eyes with Jeffery, and his hostility faded. He squinted and said, "Depends on your sincerity."

Barbara's face went pale. "Jeffery knows nothing about my plan. Please let him go."

Donald glanced at Jeffery's hands, wanting to hold them. Jeffery pulled back and said, "Let's have a drink tonight."

Donald smiled, his anger gone. "Alright, I'll wait for you."

With that, Donald let Barbara go and left with his men.

Barbara, covered in whip marks, got up and said, "You're crazy! Don't you know he's a psycho? You're walking into your own death!"

Only the two of them were left.

Jeffery wiped the hand that touched Donald's face with a disinfectant towel, a trace of disgust in his eyes. He hated it but couldn't escape.

"Don't worry," Jeffery said calmly.

Barbara said, "Didn't you say you were seeing him tonight? How can I not worry? Will you come out unscathed?"

Jeffery turned to Barbara and asked, "Are you living well now?"

Barbara turned her head stubbornly. "I'm fine. You don't need to worry. It's a hundred times better than you going to him!"

They were born in the abyss and destined never to escape. But they couldn't surrender or lose their dignity.

Jeffery, calm and indifferent, touched the cross bracelet in his pocket. "This life will end soon."

Barbara saw a sinister smile on his lips. "What are you planning?"

Jeffery took out his scalpel and carefully wiped it.

"You should eat something," Janetta said to Pearl."For the baby, not you."

Oscar hadn't woken up, and waiting wasn't a solution.

Pearl touched her belly and decided to listen to Janetta. She wasn't alone now. "Okay."

Pearl and Janetta left the hospital to get food and toiletries.

Janetta went to a convenience store for a drink.

After a while, Janetta handed a cup to Pearl. "Here you go."

Pearl reached out, but the drink slipped from her hand. Janetta caught it quickly.

"Pearl, what's wrong?" Janetta asked. "Are you too tired?"

Pearl found it strange. She had wanted to catch it, but the bottle slipped. Maybe it was the anesthesia; she hadn't fully recovered.

Janetta placed the drink in her hand. "Hold it tight, don't drop it!"

Pearl held it firmly. "Okay."

"I'll pick out some cakes. Wait here," Janetta said.

"Okay." Pearl nodded and sat by the window, uneasy, thinking of Barbara and what she had said. She must have met Barbara and Jeffery before, but couldn't recall when.

Suddenly, she saw Jeffery across the street, his blue eyes looking at her.

Pearl stood up immediately. "Jeffery," she muttered, following him outside.

Jeffery looked at her with a gentle smile, but she saw sadness in his eyes. She thought, 'Why do I feel sad too?'

Reflecting on her harsh words, she realized they might have hurt him. She suddenly understood that Jeffery probably wouldn't harm her. He might have his reasons. She also wanted to clarify if they had experienced life and death together.

She had to cross the street to see him but had to wait for the green light. As cars passed by, her eyes followed Jeffery, hoping he wouldn't leave and would wait for her.

When the light turned green, Pearl hurried across. However, when she reached the other side, Jeffery was gone. Instead, there was a basket of freshly picked strawberries by the roadside.

Pearl was stunned. She picked up the basket, looking around. "Jeffery!" she shouted. "Come out, I have something to ask you. Why are you suddenly avoiding me?"

She was so close to the answer, but he was gone. She thought, 'What did he mean by leaving a basket of strawberries?'

She looked around but couldn't see him, as if he had vanished.

"Pearl!" Janetta came over, not seeing Pearl and fearing she had been kidnapped again. She saw her across the street, searching for something. "Pearl, wait there. I'll come to you."

Pearl felt the basket of strawberries was heavy, just like Jeffery's feelings for her. He wasn't necessarily bad, but his feelings for her were complicated. Pearl thought, 'Maybe we had been good friends.'

Pearl felt a bit lost. Janetta caught up and hugged her. "What are you looking for? I thought someone tried to kidnap you again."

Pearl said, "I'm looking for someone."

Janetta looked around. "Who? What kind of person?"

"Jeffery."

Janetta remembered. "Jeffery? He's so good-looking, it's a pity he's not a star. Did you see him?"

"I saw him looking at me, but when I got here, he was gone."

"Really? Could it be your imagination?" Janetta thought Jeffery had no reason to avoid her.

"Then what's with this basket of strawberries?" Pearl asked.

Janetta looked at the basket, a bit surprised. "He likes giving you strawberries so much, why doesn't he see you?" She found Jeffery a bit strange.

Pearl shook her head. "I don't know."

Janetta thought of Oscar still in a coma at the hospital and pulled her along. "Stop thinking about it. Let's go back for now; we can think about it over a meal later."

Pearl and Janetta walked back to the hospital, but Pearl kept looking around. She was afraid of missing Jeffery. She had many questions for him. She hadn't paid much attention before, feeling she was overthinking. But after this experience, she was sure she had a connection with Jeffery! She just couldn't remember.

When they returned to the hospital, they saw Haley. Wearing sunglasses and dressed elegantly, she looked anxious, like she had just come from a party. She took off her sunglasses and asked, "Where's Oscar?"

To ensure Oscar's safety, soldiers guarded the door. Elijah, who was with Oscar, stopped Haley as soon as he saw her. "Oscar is resting and cannot be disturbed!"
