Chapter 290 Seems Like I'm About to Remember

Noticing Pearl hadn't come out for a while, Kittie walked into the study.

"Pearl, what are you looking for?" Kittie asked from the doorway, seeing Pearl searching.

Pearl looked up. "Mom, I remember Dad loved collecting newspapers. Why can't I find any?"

Evans had a hobby of collecting newspapers and kept them in a box, from the first to the most recent.

They were supposed to be well-organized.

She should have found them easily, but she couldn't.

Kittie's expression changed. To hide her emotions, she walked over with a smile. "What newspaper are you looking for? I'll help you."

Pearl said, "The one from when I was in middle school. There should be one, right?"

Kittie got more nervous. "Which issue? You were in middle school for three years. Which specific one?"

"Wasn't I kidnapped at school?" Pearl asked casually. "That should have made the news."

Kittie's face changed again. "Why do you want to find that?"

Pearl paused and looked at Kittie. "I've been feeling strange lately. I want to see that newspaper. Maybe it'll help me remember something."

Kittie grabbed Pearl's hand. "Why dig up painful memories? Your dad didn't collect every issue of the newspaper. If you can't find it, it doesn't exist."

Pearl asked again, "Really not there?"

Kittie said, "No, it's not. But tell me, what's been on your mind lately?"

Pearl had searched thoroughly and couldn't find the newspaper, so it must not be there.

She decided not to waste more energy.

"Nothing much, just having nightmares," Pearl said. "They're like being kidnapped, but different."

Kittie looked serious. "You probably haven't been sleeping well, have you?"

Pearl didn't mention the recent dangers.

She didn't want Kittie to worry.

"A bit," Pearl said. "Maybe I'm just too tired from work."

Kittie felt sorry for her. "Then get a good night's sleep. Don't harm your health for work."

"I know," Pearl said, holding Kittie's hand. "I'll be fine."

Kittie asked, "How are things with Oscar? Still thinking about divorce?"

This was the hardest question for Pearl.

She thought, 'Should I divorce Oscar or not? Oscar risked his life for me and is now in the hospital, his fate uncertain. Talking about divorce now seems heartless. Oscar has been good to me, and I'm carrying his child. The best choice would be for the family to be happy together. I don't want the child to lose a father.'

Seeing Pearl hesitate, Kittie understood. "It's up to you. I won't force you, but be sure about your decision. Don't regret it later, or you'll suffer."

Kittie was looking out for her, and Pearl knew it. She felt bad for making Kittie worry.

Pearl smiled. "I know, Mom. I'll think it through."

"Alright," Kittie said. "Go talk to Janetta."

"Thank you, Mom."

Kittie smiled. "I'm doing this for you. It's not hard at all. My biggest wish is for you to be safe and sound."

With that, Kittie left the room.

Pearl felt very fortunate.

Kittie and Evans loved her so much.

With all the commotion at home, Evans also got up, who brought them some fruit to eat.

Parents always worry about their kids going hungry.

"Dad, you should rest. It's so late, and we're disturbing you," Pearl said.

"It's never too late when you come home," Evans said, looking at her lovingly. He then turned to Janetta. "You haven't been here for a while either."

Janetta said, "I've been busy with work, but I still keep in touch with Pearl. Evans, I came in a hurry and didn't bring you any gifts."

"That's okay," Evans said. "You and Pearl are like sisters, so you're like half a daughter to me. No need to be so formal."

With that, Evans got up and said, "I'll go check on your mom."

Then Evans went to the kitchen.

The TV was still on in the living room, and Janetta was munching on an apple. "What were you looking for earlier? You were gone for so long."

"I was looking for a newspaper."

This made Janetta stunned. "What newspaper?"

Pearl said, "The one from when I was in middle school, about a murder case. I want to find that issue."

Janetta pursed her lips. "Why are you looking for that? It's not a good memory. Why remember it?"

Pearl felt it was unnecessary, but now she had to, or she would miss out on many important things.

"I don't want to, but recent events make me feel they're related to my past," Pearl said. "What if it's a criminal gang seeking revenge?"

"You're overthinking it," Janetta said. "It's just Haley being jealous and causing trouble behind your back."

Pearl thought it would be simpler if that were the case.

She feared it wasn't that simple.

In the kitchen, Kittie was cutting an apple, but she was so worried that she accidentally cut her hand.

Seeing this, Evans quickly grabbed her hand and rinsed it under cold water, "What's wrong with you? You're so distracted that you cut yourself."

Kittie glanced outside and whispered, "Evans, I have a feeling Pearl might be starting to remember something."

Evans frowned. "How is that possible?"

"Really, she was looking for a newspaper today," Kittie said, her eyes red with anxiety. "What should we do?"

Evans' face turned serious. "Don't worry too much. Pearl isn't the little girl she used to be. If she remembers, maybe it's God's plan."

Kittie leaned into Evans' arms, tears streaming down her face. "I'm just afraid she won't be able to handle it."

Evans patted her back, comforting her, "Don't be afraid. Pearl will be fine."

Pearl and Janetta slept together.

Before bed, they drank the chicken soup Kittie had made.

It really worked.

They fell asleep almost immediately after lying down, but Pearl had another dream,in which many people were crying.

The room was pitch dark, filled with the smell of blood.

Besides the crying, there was a terrifying laugh and a hideous face.

At this point, Pearl woke up in fright.

"Pearl, did you have another nightmare?" Janetta had heard her sobbing before she woke up.

Pearl was drenched in cold sweat and took a long time to calm down.

"I had a nightmare."

"What happened? Why do you have nightmares so easily?" Janetta asked.
