Chapter 835 Guilt Towards Benjamin
Benjamin needed to get used to Nathaniel being his father now, so that when the truth came out later, it would be easier for him to accept.
But Saskia still felt guilty.
"Today, when he asked me, I almost told him. I didn't even think about how to explain why his dad doesn't acknowledge him." Saskia said, her voice full of remorse.
Nathaniel gently held her, letting her lean on him for warmth. "If anyone should feel guilty, it's me, not you."
Sure enough, Benjamin had grown closer to Nathaniel.
Before, he just liked Nathaniel as a nice man who was good to him and his mom. Now, he saw him as his dad.
Even Saskia found her relationship with Nathaniel becoming more intimate, often pushed by Benjamin's influence.
Saskia was anxious but didn't know how to address it.
After all, Benjamin was still young and didn't understand.
Before she could figure it out, something happened—Heidi was admitted to the hospital.
"How's my mom? Last night, I was woken up by her shouting my dad's name. I don't know what's wrong with her." Saskia's eyes were filled with panic and helplessness.
Jeffery glanced at her hand gripping his. "You can loosen your grip a bit."
Saskia realized and let go.
But she was still very concerned about what had happened.
"I really..."
"The patient's condition is stable now. The shouting you mentioned was because she was agitated."
Saskia was even more confused. "But none of us did anything to upset her."
Heidi's condition was delicate, and everyone was careful around her, except for Benjamin.
Benjamin was just a child; how could he have upset her?
Seeing Saskia struggling to understand, Jeffery reminded her, "We can set that aside for now. The only thing we know for sure is that her agitation is related to your father."
Thinking of her father, who had passed away years ago, Saskia felt a pang of pain.
They never expected to find Heidi after all these years.
If only her dad could see this...
"Go in and be with her. She's emotionally unstable and needs her family now," Jeffery said.
Saskia snapped out of it and went in to see Heidi.
Heidi was huddled in a corner. When she heard Saskia, she nervously raised her hand, peeking through her fingers. When she saw Saskia, she stood up happily.
"Mom, I'm sorry," Saskia said, holding Heidi's wrinkled hand, feeling a deep ache in her heart.
Heidi's hands had always been a bit rough, but now they were full of wrinkles and dark spots.
Saskia knew this was from years of scavenging.
Every time she thought about it, her heart ached.
"Saskia, you came to see me. Are you hungry? I'll make you something to eat." Heidi said, starting to look around the hospital room as if she were really going to find a pot to cook.
Even if she found a pot, Saskia wouldn't let her tire herself out.
Saskia helped her sit down. "Mom, I'm not hungry. Just sit and rest. That's the best comfort for me."
Heidi seemed to understand a little. Saskia coaxed her to lie down and rest.
She stayed with Heidi for three hours before leaving.
Nathaniel, though busy with work, called her immediately. "It's almost noon. Let's have lunch together?"
Saskia, still upset by Heidi's condition, had no appetite. "I'll pass. You go ahead."
"This isn't up for debate," Nathaniel said firmly, ignoring her refusal.
Saskia sat at a table by the window, watching people pass by outside. Her eyes were dull and distant.
Nathaniel didn't like seeing her like this. He gave the waiter a look. "Bring all your signature dishes."
The waiter was stunned for a moment, then smiled broadly.
The signature dishes arrived, and the steaming grill sent smoke towards Saskia, making her eyes water. She moved to sit next to Nathaniel.
Nathaniel teased, "You were ignoring me just now, and now you're sitting next to me. Guess you weren't really forced."
Saskia was silent for a moment, not arguing. But the distraction improved her mood.
When the food arrived, Nathaniel started grilling the meat, but he didn't eat much himself, mostly giving it to Saskia. Soon, her bowl was overflowing.
"Stop, it's enough," she said, quickly moving her bowl away, afraid Nathaniel would add more.
Nathaniel finally put down the tongs, looking a bit regretful.
"Ms. Fuller?" An unwelcome voice interrupted.
Seeing who it was, Saskia felt her appetite vanish. She was annoyed. How did she always run into Caleb? She felt really unlucky.
"And my brother is here too. I thought Ms. Fuller was dining with another man. Guess I was wrong." Caleb said with a fake smile.
So annoying. Among all the people she knew, only Caleb was the most talkative.
Nathaniel calmly ate his grilled meat. "It's none of your business. If you're done, leave."
Caleb turned to Saskia. "What a coincidence. Ms. Fuller, you wouldn't really kick me out, would you?"
"Whatever Mr. Caleb Egan says," Saskia replied, hoping he'd leave quickly before he ruined her appetite.
But Caleb, either oblivious or on purpose, said, "That's too cold. I was just about to eat. How about we share a table?"
The waiter came over, gesturing, "Sir, your table is over there."
Caleb looked at the waiter, then at Nathaniel, and smiled. "No need to rush me off."
Nathaniel's brow furrowed. Though he remained calm, Saskia knew him well enough to see he was angry. Not just angry, but very angry. If Caleb didn't leave soon...
Saskia wouldn't be surprised if Nathaniel smashed the grill over Caleb's head.
But Nathaniel kept his composure, tapping the table.
The waiter got the hint, eagerly guiding Caleb away. "This way, sir."
Before leaving, Caleb gave Saskia a meaningful look. Saskia didn't care about his look.
"Is this place owned by the Egan Group?"
"No, it's mine. I won it years ago after handling a tough case."
Saskia was surprised, looking at Nathaniel with a mix of admiration and concern. No wonder Nathaniel could command the waiter so easily. Though he hadn't said much, the waiter understood perfectly.
After they finished eating, Saskia went shopping, buying a head massager and visiting a jewelry store.
"Hi, I'd like to retrieve something I stored here."
