Chapter 628 Innocent Words of a Child

Pearl didn't say a word, but her mind was racing with memories.

Oscar jumped in, "The surveillance footage showed that Atticus drove off in the white car."

"Atticus?" Pearl couldn't believe it.

Wasn't Atticus Maeve's dad?

It was also Christopher's birthday today, and they were in Willow Creek. Oscar's business was so big that no one dared to mess with him. It seemed crazy for Atticus to pull something like this now.

Oscar pulled Pearl close, "Your due date is coming up soon. I don't want you stressing over this. But I promised to keep you in the loop. Looks like Atticus got taken too. His enemies wanted money from him. And then Christopher..." Oscar let out a heavy sigh.

Pearl felt a knot in her stomach.

All they wanted was a simple life and for Christopher to be safe and sound. How did things get so messed up?

Pearl looked at Oscar with a glimmer of hope, "After everything we've been through, will we finally get some peace?"

"Yeah," Oscar said, gently stroking her hair. "Just wait for me. I'll bring Christopher back safe and sound."

He kissed her forehead and headed out to negotiate with the kidnappers.

Their demands were clear; they wanted Atticus and Maeve.

They were willing to let Christopher go, but he was too smart and managed to escape! No one knew where he was now.

To keep Oscar from causing trouble, the kidnappers said, "The cops are on us. If you want your kid safe, drop the case! Also, transfer all the Harrington Group assets to me. Then, I'll give you your son back."

Oscar found it odd and said, "If you're after the Harrington Group, that’s got nothing to do with me. Today’s Christopher’s birthday. If you don’t give him back, don’t blame me for finding you and throwing you in jail!"

They hadn't made any new enemies lately. If these guys still wanted to mess with him, they had it coming!

They knew Oscar was powerful.

But right after they took Christopher and Maeve, Christopher started making a fuss about needing the bathroom!

They allowed him to go because he was Oscar's child; they never expected him to escape.

"Mr. Brown, it's not that we don't want to return him, but if you could find us now, you wouldn’t be negotiating. Our goal is clear."

"So, Christopher isn’t with you," Oscar said, catching them off guard.

They didn’t expect Oscar to be so sharp. Their brief hesitation gave Oscar the info he needed to find them.

They finally realized one thing: never mess with Oscar! Now they knew what it meant to face the consequences! None of them got away unscathed.

Atticus got lucky this time and was fine, but Maeve and Christopher were still missing.

The moment Atticus saw Oscar, he looked like he'd seen a savior. "Mr. Brown! I'm so sorry. Because of me, your kid got dragged into this. They needed to use the bathroom, and we lost them at a service area."

His enemies, a rival company, thought he was messing with their business, so they pulled this stunt.

Oscar's eyes were sharp, "Which service area?"

"The Harmony City service area," Atticus remembered.

Oscar coldly instructed Harold, "Send those guys to Mist Haven!"

Mist Haven was notorious for its torture methods. Oscar wanted to make it clear: anyone who dared to bully his people, he never let them off.

Meanwhile, Christopher and Maeve were hiding in a half-loaded hay truck.

The hay only filled half the truck, so they climbed in and hid in the back, which gave them enough space.

They didn't dare peek out.

Eventually, the highway patrol found them and stopped the truck at a toll booth. When Christopher saw the police, he finally felt a wave of relief.

He remembered Oscar and Pearl's phone numbers but decided to call Oscar.

Pearl was about to give birth, and he didn't want to stress her out.

When Oscar saw the unfamiliar number on his phone, he hesitated but answered. Christopher's voice came through, "Dad."

"Christopher!" Oscar was nervous, his breathing deepening.

Christopher, relieved, said, "Dad, the police have rescued us. Come pick me up."

Christopher sounded calm. After all, he was a kid who had seen war.

This was nothing compared to that, and besides, he and Maeve were unharmed. He knew they'd be rescued eventually.

Oscar rushed to get Christopher. When he saw the hay on Christopher's head, a pang of sadness hit him.

"No more big birthday parties. We'll just celebrate at home quietly." Oscar and Pearl had thrown the party for Christopher, thinking a big crowd would make him happy. But more people meant more chances for things to go wrong.

After this ordeal, Oscar was scared. If something had really happened, how could he explain it to Pearl?

Even though Pearl was expecting another child, Christopher was still their beloved kid.

Christopher held Oscar's hand, showing a maturity beyond his years. "Dad, I know you and Mom mean well. If something happens to me, you'll blame yourselves. But I'm not a little kid anymore. Some things I have to go through myself. I need to get stronger to protect myself and Maeve."

He and Maeve were classmates, and Maeve had been scared the whole time. Christopher had been comforting her. He had promised Maeve he would always protect her.

Oscar noticed Christopher's determined look, but Christopher was still young and spoke with innocence.

Then, Oscar confirmed everything with the police and took them back to Willow Creek.
