Chapter 743 Still Talking Back
Jimena moved so gently, humming a lullaby under her breath.
Emily yawned, reached out for Jimena's collar, and then dozed off in her arms.
Jimena froze, not daring to move a muscle, afraid she'd wake Emily.
When she spoke to Pearl, she mouthed, "I got Emily to sleep!"
Pearl smiled, seeing this.
She knew Jimena had done her homework on soothing kids. Plus, Emily was a super easy child—no crying or fussing—so Jimena's experience with her had been pretty smooth.
Jimena held Emily a bit longer before reluctantly putting her down.
After some small talk with Louis, RavenWing started to usher them out. "You've come to see me. Have dinner here tonight, get some rest, and head back tomorrow."
Louis sighed, "We traveled all this way and have barely sat down for half an hour, and now you're trying to kick us out?"
He knew RavenWing had their best interests at heart and didn't want to waste their time.
Thinking of this, he continued, "You're my father, and now you're seriously ill. Pearl has been by your side the whole time. If I just came for a quick visit and left, I wouldn't be able to live with myself."
Hearing this, Jimena joined in to persuade RavenWing.
But RavenWing stayed firm.
He knew the workload from his own experience, and Louis was a very responsible person.
Louis would only be more exhausted than he had been.
As a father, unable to help Louis due to his health, the least RavenWing could do was not be a burden.
"And you're about to become a father. Just taking care of the baby will keep you busy," RavenWing said, glancing instinctively at Jimena's belly.
When Jimena first found out she was pregnant, Louis shared the news with RavenWing.
By now, the baby should have been quite far along, but RavenWing noticed Jimena's belly was still flat.
He realized something was clearly wrong.
Jimena's eyes welled up. "I had a miscarriage. We came out here to get some fresh air; staying in that environment was too painful."
"Oscar and I have some things to handle. With them here, they can help look after Christopher and Emily. Otherwise, we wouldn't feel comfortable leaving them with anyone else," Pearl added, trying to persuade RavenWing.
If RavenWing hadn't been ill, she would have left Christopher and Emily with him without hesitation.
But with RavenWing sick and needing daily treatment, even if he wanted to help, he couldn't.
Hearing this, Jimena offered, "You two go ahead and handle your business. I'll take care of the kids."
Since Louis and Pearl were related by blood, and Jimena and Louis shared an incredibly close marital relationship, it followed that Christopher and Emily were also closely connected to Jimena. Plus, Jimena couldn't help but light up any time she saw the little ones.
So helping Pearl was also a way to ease her own sorrow."What about your work? Can you manage?" RavenWing still looked worried.
He had noticed the dark circles under Louis's eyes and didn't want him staying up late anymore.
Louis nodded and replied, "I can handle things remotely. And I have you to consult if I need advice."
Hearing this, RavenWing finally nodded.
He had moved to a VIP room, which was twice the size of his previous one. It had a private bathroom and a small kitchen with an electric stove.
The room also had a separate area with a five-foot-wide bed for family members to stay overnight, providing privacy while allowing them to care for the patient.
Jimena pushed their suitcase into the room; they would be staying here for the next few days.
Pearl helped them settle in and prepared to take Christopher and Emily home.
With Louis and Jimena here, she could finally take a breather.
It was time to deal with the Shadow Organization.
They had committed so many heinous acts, harming countless children and innocent families. They had to be brought to justice.
"I'll be going now," Pearl said, picking up Emily with one arm and holding Christopher's hand with the other as they left the room.
Jimena watched them leave with longing.
She didn't dare hope for a son and a daughter or specify the gender. Just having a child would be enough.
Seeing this, Louis wrapped an arm around her waist. The couple exchanged a look, understanding each other without words.
They would have children someday.
Back home, Pearl placed Emily in the cradle. Christopher, ever diligent, went upstairs to do his homework.
With Calliope helping out, Pearl sat on the couch to rest for a bit.
Her phone lit up with a message from Oscar: [I'll be home late tonight, probably around eight.]
Pearl glanced at the clock.
It was just past six. She went upstairs for a nap, waking up around seven. Then, she tied on an apron and headed to the kitchen.
Oscar had been cooking lately, but with him busy tonight, it was Pearl's turn.
She took ingredients from the fridge and quickly prepared a sumptuous dinner, even baking some tarts for Christopher.
Just as she finished, Oscar walked in, greeted by the delicious aroma.
Pearl emerged from the kitchen with a dish, hearing him at the door. She hurried over and said, "You're back! Wash up and get ready to eat. Don't forget to call Christopher down; he's doing his homework."
"Got it." Oscar quickly hung his coat.
He washed his hands in the kitchen, then hugged Pearl from behind, whispering in her ear. "Honey, I'm so happy to have you by my side."
Pearl said, "We've been married for years, and you're still so sweet-talking."
"I'm not sweet-talking. I mean it. No matter how busy my day is, seeing you makes it all worth it." Oscar's breath warmed her ear and collarbone.
It was hot and ticklish.
Pearl quickly pushed him away and said, "It's time to eat. Wash up and get the tarts out of the oven for Christopher."
"Okay." Oscar obediently complied.
