Chapter 146: Order of Events

The voice was so familiar that it made Pearl's whole body stiffen.

Pearl could only maintain her composure and turn around. She saw her college classmate, Daniel Wright.

Pearl remembered Daniel.

He had joined the Brown Group's tech department three months ago, and it was Pearl herself who had interviewed him. Besides their college connection, Daniel had performed exceptionally well during the interview and had impressive qualifications.

Pearl could only smile. "What a coincidence."

Pearl wanted to keep this kid, so she felt a bit guilty.

"I'm off today and thought I'd come to the hospital for a check-up. I didn't expect to run into you here. Pearl, are you going to Matthew King's son's birthday party next Friday?"

Daniel looked at Pearl as he spoke.

Matthew from college was a simple and honest guy from a remote rural area. He was always helpful to classmates, and he had helped Pearl before.

However, Pearl hadn't received any news about the party.

Seeing Pearl's silence, Daniel realized the issue and quickly explained, "Matthew and I are close. This news hasn't been posted in the class group yet, and I just happened to run into you today."

As he spoke, Daniel scratched his head awkwardly.

Pearl understood.

Daniel continued. "I'll post it later. Matthew didn't even think about posting it. Matthew's son has a congenital heart disease, and Matthew has already spent a lot of money on him."

Daniel had also been feeling palpitations recently, which is why he came for a check-up.

Pearl was stunned. A one-year-old child with a congenital heart disease needed a lot of money for treatment.

Maybe it was because Pearl was pregnant, but she suddenly pictured a child suffering. It made her feel uneasy.

"I'd better be going. You should get your check-up done early," she said.

"Okay." Daniel nodded, and Pearl walked away quickly.

Daniel noticed that Pearl's face looked a bit off, especially when he had just called out to her. Pearl's unnatural expression and the fact that she had just thrown something into the trash can made him curious.

After hesitating for a moment, Daniel looked into the trash can.

He saw a pile of shredded paper.

Among them, the words "ultrasound examination" were very clear.

Given his recent situation and Matthew's son's condition, Daniel pieced together the shredded paper.

He was very surprised by the result.

The ultrasound report showed that Pearl was 42 days pregnant.

In the company, Pearl had worked diligently and was considered Mr. Brown's right-hand along with Harold. She didn't have a boyfriend, yet she was pregnant.

Daniel thought of the rumors in the company.

Taking a deep breath, Daniel took photos of the shredded pieces with his camera before burning them with a lighter.

After leaving the hospital, Pearl hailed a cab and went to a nearby mall. At the same time, she called Janetta.

Unexpectedly, before Janetta could answer, Oscar's call came in first.

Oscar's deep voice sounded in her ear. "Are you going to Janetta's place now?"

"Yes, do you need me to do something?" Pearl asked naturally.

Pearl had decided not to argue with Oscar. She wanted to help him during the remaining time, make his work easier, and leave him with good memories.

Oscar pressed his lips together and spoke in a hoarse voice. "Nothing, I just wanted to remind you not to forget what I told you this morning."

"Okay." Pearl agreed, and Oscar hung up the phone.

Only then did Pearl call Janetta. Janetta's voice was lazy, and Pearl felt very apologetic. "I'm sorry to disturb you. I'm on my way to the mall near your house. I'll find a place to wait for you."

"Okay," Janetta said.

After arriving at the mall, Pearl found a juice shop and ordered two juices.

When Janetta arrived, she saw Pearl sitting at a cream-colored table, holding a cup of juice.

"Why did you think of inviting me out today, and to such a famous place? What's your agenda?" Janetta gave Pearl a playful look.

Despite her words, Janetta pulled out a chair and sat across from Pearl.

Pearl laughed. "No agenda, I just wanted you to accompany me for some shopping. Also, Oscar told me that Harold has already settled the exhibition."

Janetta's mood was fine until Oscar was mentioned. She remembered the hidden threats in Oscar's words and Pearl's softness towards him.

"Pearl, you need to understand one thing. If a woman isn't tough, her position isn't secure. Even if you don't act that way, the meaning is the same. You need to be tougher to protect yourself. Otherwise, how long will you be dragged down?" Janetta pursed her lips and advised Pearl honestly.

Pearl nodded. "I understand what you're saying. I went to the hospital today, and the doctor said I'm over a month pregnant."

"I figured."

That day, when Pearl was vomiting in Janetta's bathroom, Janetta had already figured it out. Because Janetta had noticed, Pearl didn't hide it from her now.

Pearl said, "I need to buy some looser clothes. Come with me to take a look."

"Let's go then." Since Pearl had asked, what could Janetta say?

Janetta still sat with Pearl for a while.

When they left the juice shop, Janetta linked arms with Pearl. In the women's clothing section, Pearl was looking at loose clothes, mostly long dresses.

Janetta was a bit worried and said, "You usually wear business attire. If you suddenly change your style, Oscar, being so cautious, will probably notice right away."

"I've hired a new secretary for him. Not wearing business attire and switching to casual wear can easily be explained away," Pearl smiled.

Pearl looked at several outfits.

She even wanted to buy some for Janetta.

Janetta refused. "I can't let you buy me clothes."

"I'm spending my own money, not Oscar's," Pearl handed the clothes to Janetta, pushing her towards the fitting room.

Pearl had decided to keep the child, and she knew she couldn't stay in Willow Creek. She didn't know when she would see Janetta again.

When Janetta entered the fitting room, she noticed the sadness in Pearl's eyes. She pulled Pearl aside. "Pearl, tell me your plan. Why do I feel like you're planning to leave?"

Pearl pressed her lips together and was about to speak when a sharp, arrogant female voice came from a distance. "Excuse me, I'm a top VIP here. Bring me the clothes she's holding!"

The voice was directed at Pearl and Janetta, making them look towards the source.

Janetta immediately frowned. "So what if you're a top VIP? Don't you know that there's an order to everything?"
