Chapter 329 You've Been Lying to Me All Along

"Stop talking nonsense."

Barbara's tears kept falling, but not for Jeffery.

They were for herself.

"Seriously," Barbara said, her eyes empty. "Every time I have a nightmare, I dream no one comes to see me after I die. No family, no friends. I die like trash."

Jeffery tried to comfort her, "That won't happen to you."

Barbara closed her eyes, feeling a sadness she couldn't put into words.

She'd always been different from other girls.

While others had parents, she had none.

All she knew was killing.

People said her biological parents sold her to The Crimson Eclipse Society for eight thousand dollars.

What kind of parents didn't love their kids?

Ridiclous!

She was the one her parents didn't love.

They preferred boys and didn't like girls, so they sold her without a second thought.

Since she could remember, her life was all about practicing killing and stealing.

Her childhood was full of beatings and coldness.

Once sold, she lost the right to choose her own life.

She became a killing machine.

Knowing this, she had no choice but to jump into the pit.

If she didn't, she'd die!

She wished she'd never been born; it would've been better than being trafficked into The Crimson Eclipse Society and committing crimes every day.

She wanted to be a good person, but she wasn't allowed to from birth.

Barbara wondered if she'd ever lived for herself even once.

She hadn't.

She only lived a life of barely surviving.

As Donald said, she was a worthless life.

If her parents didn't love her, who else would?

She lacked so many things.

It seemed like she had nothing truly in her hands.

Only when Jeffery was around did she feel alive.

Sometimes, she envied Jeffery.

He had a personality and knew what he wanted, but she didn't.

She couldn't even control her fate, so how could she dare to think about what she wanted?

Barbara had given up; maybe Jeffery's happiness was her only solace.

She wasn't happy, so why take away his happiness?

Life and death were the same.

So she let go of Jeffery, gently tracing her finger along his wrist, still feeling a pang of heartache for him. "I hope you don't regret it. I hope it’s all worth it."

Pearl wandered aimlessly on the street.

She suddenly didn't know where to go.

Where was she supposed to go?

She felt like the sky had fallen and the people around her were untrustworthy.

So who could she trust?

She looked at her own hands, knowing she was alive, yet being told she was poisoned and had little time left.

Why did she feel so healthy?

Pearl couldn't process everything at once, as if she were dreaming.

She hoped it was a dream.

But when Pearl pinched herself, it hurt.

So it wasn't a dream.

Pearl's eyes were somewhat hollow, blinking as if lacking vitality.

She walked slowly and bumped into a passerby.

"What's wrong with you?" The passerby snapped.

"Sorry," Pearl apologized and kept walking.

The sky seemed to understand Pearl's sadness, darkening as if it were about to rain.

The pedestrians on the road were heading home.

Pearl, unaware of the situation, kept walking.

’Ahead was my home, right? Did I have a home?’

Her marriage was broken, and now she was facing death.

Suddenly, a thunderclap sounded.

But it didn't scare Pearl, who seemed not to hear it.

Passersby were rushing home, making her seem leisurely by comparison.

A car was following her.

Sensing something was wrong, the driver made a call. "Oscar, something's off. Ms. Harris has been acting weird since she left Dr. Gary's place!"

Oscar was at a social event. Hearing the news about Pearl, he immediately put down his drink.

"I got it." Hanging up, Oscar stood up and left right away.

Haley was busy meeting famous directors and producers, people she needed to impress for her career.

She didn't notice Oscar had already left.

When she realized, all that was left was his unfinished drink.

Haley became distracted.

But facing these industry bigwigs, she had to smile and act like nothing happened.

Thunder rumbled in the distance, which foretold heavy rain.

Soon, raindrops started falling.

Two drops.

Three drops.

The rain began to pour harder and harder.

When Oscar arrived, he saw Pearl walking numbly forward.

He frowned, got out of the car, and despite the rain, walked quickly towards her.

He grabbed Pearl and shouted, "What are you doing? It's raining. Are you crazy!"

Pearl turned to look at Oscar's face, scanning him up and down, seeing him in a suit as if he had come from some grand event.

Pearl's lips curled into a smile. "Mr. Brown, you must have had a great time today!"

Oscar's face was cold, and her smile was casual but mocking.

Pearl said nothing more and turned to walk away.

Oscar grabbed her again. "Pearl, come with me!"

Pearl forcefully shook him off. "I am crazy, why do you care about me!"

"Stop making a scene!" Oscar said in a deep voice.

Pearl looked at him, her smile even more bitter. "I'm not making a scene. I'm being obedient. I can only be your hidden wife. This is what you gave me, but so what? We're divorced now! I'm no longer your wife, Oscar, so why do you care!"

Oscar, holding back his emotions, said patiently, "Come home with me!"

"Home? Whose home?" Pearl's eyes reddened as she shouted, "I'm dying! How can I still have a home?"

Oscar's eyes widened in shock, then he clenched his fists, feeling a wave of suffocation.

He grabbed her shoulders and asked, "Who told you!"

The rain fell harder, mixed with thunder, drenching them.

Pearl looked at him and sneered. "Oscar, you knew all along but chose to hide it from me! You abandoned me but didn't let me know I was dying. Is it to lessen your guilt? Or do you think as long as I don't know, it never happened!"

Oscar's serious gaze met her most brutal words.

He had become the most heartless man in her eyes.

Pearl shook off his arm. "Stop pretending to be a good person. What I do is none of your business! This is my body, I have the right to know. You shouldn't have hidden it from me! What do you take me for, a fragile piece of glass? You hid it from me for so long, but let Adrian take risks for me. Oscar, what right do you have to hide it from me!"

She felt like a fool.

She was poisoned, yet she was the last to know.

"So you know everything." Oscar didn't expect her to find out so quickly.

Pearl said angrily, "It's all your fault, you lied to me, you always lied to me!"

Oscar pulled her into his arms.
