Chapter 289 Where You Stand Up Is Where You Fall
Haley spotted Oscar through the glass window. He looked like he was on death's door. She grabbed Elijah and asked, "How is he? Is he badly hurt? What happened? When will he wake up?"
"I don't know," Elijah replied. "But we need to stay calm. If you want to wait for Oscar to wake up, you'll have to do it quietly."
Haley's eyes were red with worry.
"How did he end up in the ICU?" Haley was frantic. "Is he going to die?"
She was clearly scared.
Seeing her like this, Janetta couldn't help but say, "Why is she so anxious? Oscar isn't her husband! And how does she know he's hurt? Could she be involved in the kidnapping?"
Pearl had been suspicious from the moment Haley asked.
'Oscar got shot and ended up in the ICU within hours, and no one was told. How did Haley know? Unless she's in on it.' This thought shocked Pearl. Could Haley be involved?
Pearl walked up, keeping her cool.
Haley was pacing anxiously. When she saw Pearl, she blamed her, "Is it you? Oscar must have gotten hurt because of you. You're a jinx. As long as you're around, he'll suffer!"
Pearl stayed calm and asked, "How did you know Oscar was hurt?"
Haley's face stiffened, then she argued, "Why wouldn't I know? I went looking for Oscar, and he hasn't been around. I even asked Harold, and he said Oscar went to see you. Whenever he's with you, he gets hurt."
"That's a weak excuse," Pearl said. "You were the first to know Oscar was hurt. I think you know more. Are you trying to harm me?"
"Don't talk nonsense!" Haley was panicking but tried to stay firm. "Why would I want to harm you? What do you have that's worth it? I'm just worried about Oscar. Besides, you accuse me without evidence. I'm a big star now, and I can't stand rumors. I could sue you for slander!"
Janetta was furious. "You have some nerve, playing the victim. Right now, you're the prime suspect!"
"Stop talking nonsense!" Haley glared at Janetta. "I'm here to see Oscar, not to argue with you. It's beneath me!"
"Aren't you just an artist under Oscar's company?" Janetta mocked. "By that logic, you should call Pearl 'Mrs. Brown'!"
The title made Haley clench her fists.
She said, "Hathaway will be here soon. If you don't want to argue, then shut up!"
Pearl remembered Haley's look. "Feeling guilty? Remember, you're a public figure. If your dirty deeds come out, you'll be ruined. Not only will you be out of the entertainment industry, but you'll also go to jail. Know your place."
Haley glared coldly at Pearl. "Don't worry, that day will never come."
Pearl didn't back down and coldly said, "That's what you say. I hope you can live up to it!"
Haley's eyes were icy, like she was declaring war.
Pearl was making it clear she wouldn't let her off easy.
Haley had never seen this side of her before.
That look put some pressure on Haley.
Pearl didn't want to give Haley any more leeway. "Ms. Garcia, you've seen enough. Please leave. You don't need to worry about when my husband will wake up!"
Haley was even more defiant. "Pearl, you're just a discarded woman!"
"I'm Oscar's wife. He risked his life to save me. You have no right to be here!" Pearl said firmly, "Get her out of here!"
"You!" Haley was furious.
Elijah still listened to Pearl. They all knew Oscar got hurt saving her, and she was his wife.
"Ms. Garcia, please leave! Otherwise, we'll have to escort you out!"
Haley saw several tall, muscular men looking tough.
She glared at Pearl. "You! Just wait and see!"
Haley couldn't afford to provoke them and left.
"Pearl, you were so cool this time. Look at how angry Haley was." Janetta was happy to see Haley leave so embarrassed.
Haley used to act high and mighty because Hathaway protected her, and they couldn't do anything about it.
Pearl was determined this time.
"This is just the beginning." Pearl watched Haley's departing figure. "I don't believe this kidnapping has nothing to do with her. Since she could do such a thing, I won't give her any way out!"
Janetta saw the look in Pearl's eyes and knew she wasn't planning to back down. "What do you want to do?"
Pearl said, "Isn't her biggest dream to be a star? She'll fall from where she rose!"
She wouldn't be as ruthless as Haley.
Haley wanted to bribe someone to kill her.
She would use legal means to make Haley lose convincingly.
"Ms. Harris, you should get some rest. I'll stay here. I'll let you know as soon as Oscar wakes up." Elijah was worried they would be too exhausted from staying up all night.
"What's your name?" Pearl asked.
"Elijah," he replied. "Oscar used to be our captain."
Pearl asked again, "Those people didn't hurt me but shot Oscar in the heart. Although it was a few inches off, they wanted to kill him."
They originally wanted to harm her, but in the end, Oscar got hurt. She felt the other side was also after Oscar.
Elijah looked at Pearl, unsure whether to disclose more information to her.
"Wait until Oscar wakes up and ask him," Elijah thought it would be better if Oscar told her himself.
Pearl didn't ask further.
She felt she had exhausted her energy today. Being pregnant made a difference.
She didn't have the energy to stay up and headed home.
Janetta and Pearl went home together.
Kittie opened the door and saw them coming back so late. She asked, "Why are you so late today? What happened? You both look unwell."
Kittie sensed something was wrong.
They didn't say much, not wanting to worry Kittie and Evans. "Pearl and I shopped all day and got exhausted. We were close by, so we came back together."
"Come in quickly." Kittie poured them tea and chatted with Janetta for a bit.
Meanwhile, Pearl went to the study to look for something.
