Chapter 319 Her Life Has Value
Jeffery's always been a decisive guy.
He didn't want to let Adrian go but was torn, wondering if Adrian was a trustworthy friend for Pearl.
Their fight got pretty loud.
Pearl, feeling better, woke up and saw them tangled up. "What are you doing?" she asked.
Jeffery, with his back to Pearl, blocked Adrian from view.
"Adrian?" Pearl called out, recognizing his figure.
Hearing her, Jeffery let Adrian go and hid the scalpel.
Adrian, catching on, smiled like nothing happened. "Pearl, you're awake."
Pearl sat up. "Why are you here?"
Adrian, holding a gift, said, "Just got back from a business trip. Went to your place, but no one was there. Figured you were still at the office, so I came to check on you. This is for you."
He handed her a champagne rose and a box of imported chocolates.
"Thanks." Pearl took them and looked at Jeffery. "You're here too? Looked like you two were about to fight."
Adrian quickly replied, "First meeting, so we were just being cautious and talking a bit more."
Pearl glanced at Jeffery, worried he wasn't good with people. "Well, you should get to know each other. This is my old classmate Adrian, and this is Jeffery, my new friend!"
Adrian looked at Jeffery and said friendly, "Hello."
"Hello," Jeffery nodded. "Sorry about earlier."
"No problem."
Adrian noticed Pearl looked different, thinner. A pregnant woman should gain weight, but she seemed to be losing it.
"I'm off work now," Pearl said, not paying them much attention. "I'll tidy up a bit, you two wait outside."
They went outside without a word.
Pearl was still thinking about Penelope's play and planned to watch it again at home.
As Adrian and Jeffery walked out, Adrian asked, "What's wrong with Pearl? She doesn't look well. Why did she divorce Oscar? What's going on?"
Even if he hadn't seen Pearl, he knew about her and Oscar. The proposal broadcast and the news with Haley—he knew it all.
He knew it was Pearl in the proposal broadcast, even without seeing her face.
He was on a business trip then, happy for her and Oscar. He thought she'd always be happy.
He planned to stay friends and not disturb her.
But then he saw Oscar's scandal, which was unusual.
Jeffery wasn't sure how much Adrian knew and hesitated. "Even if you know, what can you do? You can't change the situation."
Adrian paused. "You're not the only one who can help Pearl. I can too."
Jeffery's lips curved slightly. "Even if it costs your life?"
Adrian was stunned. "Yes."
Jeffery's blue eyes darkened. "She's been poisoned, and there's no cure."
Adrian's heart sank. "No cure? No wonder she looks so bad. I saw you bleeding her earlier. Is that the only way to help?"
"I can only ease her pain temporarily. I can't cure the poison. There's an antidote, but it's not here," Jeffery frowned.
"Where's the antidote?" Adrian pressed.
Jeffery hesitated but finally said, "Do you know The Crimson Eclipse Society?"
Adrian's face tightened. "Isn't that a terrorist group? Thought it was wiped out years ago."
"It hasn't disappeared," Jeffery's eyes darkened. "I'm a member of The Crimson Eclipse Society."
Adrian thought back to when Pearl was kidnapped. "Is Pearl being targeted by them?"
Jeffery lowered his eyes. "Probably not."
"Oscar and Haley's scandal... could it be that he..." Adrian trailed off, a terrible thought forming.
"Haley might not have the antidote," Jeffery said. "But right now, she's our only lead. No one else knows who has it."
Adrian clenched his fists, worried about Pearl. "I get it. I'll find a way."
Jeffery nodded. "Do what you can."
Just then, Pearl came out with her bag, smiling. "What are you guys talking about?"
They both looked at her.
Pearl noticed their serious faces. "What's up with you two? Something happen? You both look worried."
Jeffery composed himself and smiled. "What do you want to eat tonight?"
Pearl stared at him. "You look so pale lately. Let's eat out tonight. My treat, for both of you."
Adrian forced a smile. "Sure."
Pearl took them to a fancy restaurant.
"By the way, I'm not just working at the TV station now. I've also invested in a TV series," Pearl said, looking at the menu. "My career's going well, but it's stressful. I won't give up. I have to work harder."
Jeffery's gaze softened, and he smiled at her.
"Let's get this too," Pearl said, looking at Adrian. "Order whatever you like."
Adrian asked, "Need more funds for the TV series?"
"No," Pearl replied. "I have some money, but it might run out. I'll keep working hard. It's just me and the baby now, and there are lots of expenses."
"No worries, you still have me!" Adrian said enthusiastically.
Pearl looked at Adrian, she decided to rely on her own efforts. When the waiter brought the dishes, she said, "Let's dig in. I'm starving!"
Pearl started eating heartily.
She needed to eat well to keep working hard.
"Take your time, no one's taking it from you. Is work tiring? Do you have time to eat?"
"No, I'm pregnant, so I have a big appetite!" Pearl said while eating. "Don't worry about me. I actually feel pretty good. I feel more valuable!"
This was her true feeling.
She used to live for Oscar, but now she lived for herself, and everything felt more energetic.
However, Adrian still felt sorry for her.
Jeffery understood her and always supported her wishes.
He didn't say anything either.
Jeffery ate slowly and methodically.
Suddenly, the restaurant's alarm went off.
"Run, there's a fire!"
Hearing the alarm, the customers immediately ran outside.
