Chapter 598 Sharing Hardships

Desiree instinctively grabbed Harold tight, then realized what was happening and slowly let go, glancing around.

She reached for the stick next to her, trying to steady herself. "Come on, I'm not scared of you at all," she said.

Harold quickly grabbed her hand. "Don't provoke it," he warned.

The snake's eyes glinted coldly as it flicked its tongue and lunged forward.

"Ah!" Desiree screamed, swinging the stick wildly with her eyes closed. The snake coiled around the stick and bit her leg before slithering away.

Desiree fell to the ground, staring at the bloody marks on her leg, feeling helpless.

All the courage she had mustered vanished, and she started to cry. "Harold, am I going to die?"

Harold held her hand. "Don't worry, you'll be fine. Just don't panic."

Without hesitation, he began to suck the venom from her wound. Desiree was shocked, feeling the warm, soft sensation on her leg.

"Harold, cut it out. It's not good for you either," she quickly said.

Harold spat out a mouthful of black blood and said steadily, "I brought you out here, so I have to make sure you get back safely."

Hearing this, Desiree's eyes filled with tears. Harold wasn't just a guy who talked big; he actually did what he said.

"Harold, we have to get back safely together," she said, her voice choked with urgency.

After spitting out the last mouthful of venomous blood, Harold's eyes softened. "Of course, we will get back safely."

His voice seemed to have a magical power, calming Desiree's anxious heart.

Harold then asked, "Can you still walk? It's getting dark; we can't stay here."

In the wilderness, nightfall was when wild beasts were most likely to appear. Now, with both of them injured, they couldn't afford any more danger.

Desiree nodded. "Yes."

Though she said this, her pale face betrayed her condition. Harold led Desiree, groping their way forward based on instinct. They were lucky to find a cave.

Desiree followed Harold inside, nervously saying, "There shouldn't be any wild beasts here, right?"

"Probably not," Harold replied, though he wasn't completely sure. But with the sky already darkening, if they didn't find a place to hide soon, they might really be torn apart by the wild beasts outside.

Once inside the cave, they found no signs of wild beasts living there, and they both breathed a sigh of relief.

Desiree sat down, catching her breath, while Harold was also exhausted.

Desiree walked over, her voice a bit hoarse. "I'm sorry."

Harold was slightly taken aback. "Why are you apologizing?"

Desiree choked up. "If I had listened to you from the start and left when things didn't work out, we wouldn't be in this mess. It's on me."

While speaking, tears started to well up in her red and swollen eyes.

Harold felt a pang of heartache. Without thinking, he said, "You don't need to feel guilty. I agreed to this too. You don't have to take all the responsibility."

This was the first time Harold had spoken so much. Usually, he didn't say such long sentences to anyone.

"Don't cry. We're still alive. Doesn't that prove we're really lucky?" He smiled, trying to cheer Desiree up.

Desiree wiped her eyes with her sleeve. "You're right."

The night wind was cold, and a chill swept in from outside, making Desiree shiver.

Harold noticed and awkwardly said, "If we stay closer, it might be warmer."

His words were vague, but Desiree instantly understood, her face turning red.

Yet she moved closer. Harold, being a strong guy, felt like a small furnace, instantly giving Desiree a sense of security.

She gently wrapped her arms around Harold's waist, making him tense up. He hadn't expected Desiree to make such a move.

Desiree rested her face on his shoulder. "I'm so lucky to meet you."

At that moment, something seemed to change between them. Harold was stunned, his throat tightening before he said, "Me too."

The noisy cicadas outside the mountain no longer seemed annoying. Harold said, "When we get back, I'll make sure to take you out for a good time."

Hearing this, Desiree didn't want to spoil his mood. She also felt a bit hopeful. They had made it this far; as long as they found their way back in the morning, they should be able to get out, right?

"I'll treat you then, no ifs, ands, or buts," Desiree replied.

"Okay." Harold smiled.

They were both so exhausted that they quickly fell asleep. When the first ray of sunlight shone into the cave, Desiree felt something was wrong. She felt like she was hugging a giant furnace. Harold was lying in her arms, his face flushed unnaturally.

She immediately panicked and pushed Harold, her tone anxious. "Harold, are you okay?"

She hadn't expected that the person who had been optimistic and cheerful with her yesterday would fall ill today. Facing their current situation, what she feared the most was exactly this.

Harold seemed delirious from the fever, mumbling, "Don't ring me up. Let me sleep a little longer."

Desiree was scared. She feared Harold would go unconscious. She immediately slapped Harold's face. "Wake up! You can sleep as long as you want when we get back."

Harold, stimulated by her words, barely regained some clarity. "Desiree, let's go."

But as soon as he finished speaking, he collapsed to the ground, groaning in pain.

Desiree was totally stumped. She coached herself to chill out; there had to be a fix. Just about keeping her cool, she eyeballed Harold, clenched her jaw, and hauled him out.
