Chapter 733 Couldn't Get Enough of Holding Her
But if he was sick, he should get treatment. Medical technology was so advanced now, and they certainly didn't lack money.
But why was he hiding it?
"Sweetie, let's go in and ask your grandpa," Pearl said, unsure of how to answer Christopher's question.
She pushed the door open, filled with curiosity.
RavenWing was looking at his phone and didn't look up, assuming it was a nurse. His tone was a bit annoyed, "I already made myself clear earlier. This is something I should decide for myself. Do you still..."
When he saw Pearl's face, the rest of his words got stuck in his throat.
His eyes lit up with joy. "Pearl, what brings you here today? Didn't we agree on the phone that you'd come tomorrow when you have the day off? You shouldn't disrupt Christopher's school for me."
"His school let out early today, so we thought we'd drop by," Pearl said, walking towards the bed.
RavenWing smiled, but then suddenly realized the medical report was right there on the bedside table, clearly stating he had late-stage liver cancer.
If Pearl saw that, how could he keep it a secret?
He quickly grabbed the report, folded it a couple of times, and shoved it under his pillow.
The whole scene happened so fast, and with the hint of panic on his face, Pearl immediately guessed that the report contained something he was trying to hide.
A report in a hospital room could only be about his health.
"Grandpa!" Christopher ran over, bouncing with excitement. He pulled a red flower out of his backpack and placed it next to RavenWing. "I got this red flower today. I have one, Mom has one, and now you have one too."
"This flower is so bright and beautiful," RavenWing said, pinning the flower to his shirt.
At his age, he'd seen all kinds of flowers, even the rarest and most precious ones. But this simple red flower held a special place in his heart.
It represented Christopher's recognition of him and also showed that Christopher was doing well in school, earning this reward from his teacher.
RavenWing took out a necklace and put it around Christopher's neck. "Great job, this is your reward."
Then he took out another necklace and handed it to Pearl. "This is for Emily. She's too young now, so please keep it for her until she's older."
"Thank you, Grandpa!" Christopher said cheerfully.
Pearl placed Emily on a nearby chair and asked Christopher to help watch her.
She sat down next to RavenWing and quietly asked, "How have you been feeling lately?"
"I'm doing great. Eating well, sleeping well," RavenWing lied.
Pearl was already busy taking care of Emily and Christopher. Although Oscar wasn't the type to do nothing, he was considerate and helped with the kids, but he was also swamped with work at the Brown Group.
As a father who felt he had failed his daughter, RavenWing regretted not being able to help more and didn't want to burden Pearl further.
"You don't need to worry about me. I don't have any responsibilities now. I just drink tea, play chess, and tend to some plants. Life is good," he assured her.
Pearl suspected he was hiding something.
But without evidence or knowing the specifics, she could only gently persuade him, "Because you're doing well now, I hope you'll seek treatment if you're sick. Live a few more years. You want to see Emily and Christopher grow up, don't you? Imagine being at their weddings with us. Wouldn't that be wonderful?"
"Yeah, it would be great to see that day," RavenWing said, filled with longing.
But he had done too many bad things in his life, hurt many people, and now he felt he was paying for it.
However, being able to reconcile with Pearl before he died, sitting together and chatting calmly, was enough for him.
One should be content.
Just then, he felt a tightness in his chest and started coughing violently.
Pearl quickly patted his back, and Christopher ran to get a cup, carefully pouring warm water from a kettle.
He brought the water to the bedside. "Grandpa, drink some water. It'll make you feel better."
When his throat was sore before, Pearl had given him warm water, and it had really helped.
RavenWing took a tissue, wiped the blood from his mouth, and threw the tissue into the trash.
He took the cup from Christopher and drank it all. It was just plain water, but it tasted sweet, as if it had a lot of sugar in it.
"Maybe I should call the doctor to check on you and prescribe some medicine. This coughing is too much," Pearl suggested, hoping to use the opportunity to find out what was really wrong.
RavenWing shook his head. "No need. I caught a cold last night from sleeping with the window open. It's just a cough, nothing serious."
He was adamant, and Pearl couldn't force the doctor in or make him undergo an examination.
She chatted with RavenWing for a while longer, then brought Emily over. RavenWing couldn't get enough of holding her.
He held Emily and told stories to Christopher. The three of them together made a harmonious scene.
He even prepared a bottle of formula and fed Emily himself.
Feeding a baby might seem easy, but it depended on the child's cooperation. Emily kept reaching for RavenWing's chin, not very interested in drinking.
RavenWing wasn't in a hurry. He smiled and coaxed her, "Emily, just one more sip. Then you can grab all you want. If you don't drink enough now, you'll be hungry soon, and that's no fun."
Emily didn't understand his words at her age.
She only sensed the kindness from RavenWing and guessed he was playing with her, making her laugh even more.
Pearl watched for a while, wanting to help, but RavenWing refused. "Let me hold her a bit longer. She's so adorable."
"I'm worried you'll get tired. Put her down for a bit and rest."
"It's fine. Emily isn't heavy. I could hold her all day and night and not get tired," RavenWing said, beaming.
