Chapter 116 Mastering in Front of Relatives
Pearl heard Oscar's words and didn't hide anything, saying, "Grandpa Reid, I'm already married. You don't need to introduce me to anyone."
"So this is Pearl's husband!"
Hotch was quite happy. Before Mr. Harris passed away, Pearl was still a student. Now, witnessing this, he couldn't help but look at Oscar more, smiling and saying, "Handsome and talented, a rare find. Pearl has good taste!"
"Both of you must live well together. Meeting is fate, staying together is even more difficult. Cherish it!" Hotch rambled on, but it was all for their good.
Upon hearing this, Oscar's lips curled slightly.
Pearl didn't want to interrupt Hotch's words, so she could only listen.
He also had to go eat with them, sighing, "What a shame about Arthur, it's a good thing Mr. Harris passed away. If he were alive, he would be furious!"
Hotch had watched Arthur grow up.
Watching Pearl change so drastically bit by bit, Hotch couldn't help but feel regretful.
Pearl remained silent. As Oscar had said, she didn't say much to those who were willing to see the truth; he would understand.
The guests were already seated.
As Pearl walked over, she knew she couldn't avoid people talking behind her back.
But before she could even arrive, she heard someone calling out, "Pearl, come sit here, Oscar too!"
Suddenly, someone grabbed her hand. Pearl saw that it was Jack Harris, her Uncle Jack. Jack's daughter welcomed Pearl and Oscar over. Pearl was a bit surprised and looked toward Oscar.
Oscar gave her a reassuring look, indicating that she should not to be too flustered.
"Pearl hasn't been back for a long time. As soon as she returns, she brings her son-in-law. Come and see, this is Pearl and Pearl's husband, Oscar!"
"Pearl looks beautiful, and this son-in-law is handsome too. The Harris family is blessed."
"You flatter us, you flatter us. Oscar is extraordinary. Choosing our Pearl means she's charming!"
"Come, Pearl, Oscar, have a drink!"
Families back home always liked to boast about family and career.
Oscar's status alone was enough for them to boast about for a lifetime.
The atmosphere suddenly became lively.
The members of the Harris family were now so enthusiastic that Pearl felt a bit overwhelmed.
They were different from before.
Everyone's attention was on her and Oscar.
Now, the members of the Harris family remembered her well, praising her for being beautiful, sensible, and capable and for finding a good husband.
Pearl understood that this wasn't a workplace; these were relatives and neighbors, and it was more about showing off.
Pearl listened to Rose Harris, Jack's daughter, and Pearl's aunt, constantly praising her.
The previously dull atmosphere suddenly became different.
Pearl maintained a polite demeanor, smiling without speaking much, but she was worried that Oscar might not adapt well.
After all, he had never been to such gatherings with the older generation.
But when Pearl turned to look, she found that he was even more adaptable than her, drinking and chatting with the elders.
Oscar was getting along well with these old folks.
"Pearl, look at how well your husband fits in. He is such a great guy, and we really like him!" Rose suddenly whispered in her ear.
Pearl was taken aback, looking at Rose and then at the members of the Harris family, who seemed very pleased with Oscar.
It was hard to believe they were the same people who were cold toward her earlier.
"You can just drink water," Oscar poured her a glass of water. "Don't drink alcohol," he advised.
Pearl took the glass of water and responded lightly.
"Oscar is so considerate, always thinking of his wife!" Their small gestures were noticed by others.
They laughed, joined in the fun, and cheered, making Pearl feel a bit reserved.
Oscar held a glass of wine, smiling and saying, "Pearl is my wife. Of course, I have to spoil her."
"It's better to have a son-in-law like him. If my old man were half as considerate as him, we wouldn't argue every day!"
"Haha..."
They laughed heartily.
Pearl didn't say much; Oscar had already said enough for her.
In the eyes of others, she had married into a wealthy family, and her caring husband made many envious.
Pearl was a bit puzzled and asked, "Everyone was cold to me just now. Why are they suddenly so warm? Did you do something behind my back?"
Oscar was adept at dealing with relatives, so he must have had many interactions.
"It's nothing, just a little favor," Oscar said.
No wonder she was suddenly so well-liked.
Oscar then said in a calm voice, "As long as your relatives value you, nothing else matters."
Oscar's words left Pearl stunned.
Was Oscar so worried that she would be bullied or afraid she would be insulted by these relatives, that he had already made them feel she had support?
Before she could process this, someone else called out, "Oscar, come over! Have a drink with us. I've lived for most of my life, met so many people, and you're the first young person I like!"
The uncles at the table, some of whom were a bit drunk, turned to Oscar, beckoning happily.
Seeing Oscar stand up and go to clink glasses with them without any airs, Pearl witnessed this side of Oscar for the first time.
At work, during business dealings, or in life, Oscar always carried himself with a high posture, aloof and lacking in warmth.
But now, he was just like an ordinary person, drinking and chatting with the older generation.
It was hard to see the cold and aloof Oscar in him.
This scene made Olivia and Isabelle's eyes turn red.
Clearly, it was Arthur's funeral, but it had become a place for Pearl to show off. Who would remember that someone had died because of Pearl?
Olivia was angry and upset. She couldn't even stand to look at a glass of water and ended up smashing it on the ground.
"You should accept your fate," Beatrice Hartley said.
Beatrice, who looked almost seventy and was adorned with gold jewelry on her neck and hands, glanced at Olivia, who was frustrated and sharply said, "I was against your marriage to Arthur in the first place. Now look, Arthur left nothing behind. He's dead, and you've become a widow. Your reputation is awful."
Olivia looked up at Beatrice. "Mom, are you going to say the same to me? If it weren't for Pearl, how could my husband have died? How could I have become a widow? It's someone else's fault!"
"And what of it?" Beatrice glanced at Isabelle and said, "How can Pearl marry into wealth, and your daughter can't? Same brothers, different destinies, same sisters, different fates. It just shows that your family is doomed!"
"Mom, what are you saying? Isabelle just graduated. She hasn't even started dating yet. How can you say these things so casually? She will definitely be a hundred times better than Pearl in the future!" Olivia said indignantly.
Isabelle was definitely going to surpass everyone!
