Chapter 181 Really Pregnant?
Pearl didn't say anything more. Hunter was right; it's easy to hurt others, but one must bear the consequences of their actions.
"I'm sorry, Pearl," Sophia said.
"Alright, I forgive you!" Pearl said generously.
Hunter, standing nearby, was quite satisfied. At least no major mistakes were made in this matter. He said, "It's good that you admit your mistake. The real fear is not knowing your fault when you're wrong. This is how a respectable person should act. Don't do such things again."
Sophia obediently responded, "I understand, Grandpa. I will get along with Pearl from now on." She then linked arms with Pearl, wanting Hunter to see that they would have a good relationship and that similar incidents would not occur again.
Seeing this, Hunter also smiled. "Good! You should learn to get along with Pearl."
Pearl felt a bit uncomfortable.
This sudden enthusiasm must mean something, but fortunately, Sophia didn't cause any trouble.
She was just pretending in front of Hunter to avoid making him unhappy.
"Grandpa, today is your 70th birthday. Be happy. I wish you live long and healthy!" Sophia said, bowing to Hunter.
Hunter laughed happily, "No need for so many formalities. Get up."
Sophia managed to cheer Hunter up, and he would forget the earlier matter.
"We haven't eaten yet. Let's enjoy the meal," Peter said from the side. "I'm starving. Everyone, take your seats, don't be shy."
"Let's eat," Hunter said, looking at Oscar. "Oscar, Pearl, you both sit down."
Oscar naturally couldn't refuse. "Alright."
Hunter said to Pearl, "I hired the best chef. Taste the food and see if you like it. At my place, you should all eat happily."
"Alright! Thank you, Hunter," Pearl said politely.
Hunter replied, "No need to be so formal, we're all family."
By saying this, Hunter was treating Oscar as family.
Hunter had lost his son and had no other relatives. These people were his family now. Fortunately, Hunter was optimistic and didn't dwell in his sorrow.
Pearl actually felt a bit sympathetic towards Hunter.
His son had passed away, leaving only Sophia, who must have been a bit lonely.
The meal was quite enjoyable.
Pearl also felt relaxed.
However, they rarely spoke to Oscar.
It seemed to Oscar was unwilling to talk to them either.
Only Hunter occasionally asked a couple of questions.
After the meal,
Pearl stood by the window in the hallway, enjoying the breeze.
"Why did you speak up for me just now? Didn't want to see me get bullied?" Oscar stood behind Pearl, hands in his pockets.
When he asked this, Pearl thought for a moment. Why did she defend him? Perhaps she didn't want to see him in a tough spot.
Perhaps, in Pearl's heart, Oscar held an important place, and she couldn't stand seeing him being maliciously talked about.
Pearl turned around, gazing at Oscar's chiseled face in the dim light. She said, "You are my husband, helping you is also helping myself. My dignity is important too."
It sounded like an excuse, but Oscar smiled slightly. "Just for yourself?"
"Really." Pearl couldn't understand his earlier silence and asked, "I don't get it. Usually, you're such a strong person. Why didn't you say anything when they talked about you like that?"
This was completely out of character for Oscar.
Although their status wasn't low, Oscar would never let others talk about him like that.
If Pearl hadn't been there, he might have suffered more grievances.
Oscar walked over and stood beside her, enjoying the breeze as well. He said lightly, "I'm used to it. I don't think about changing it; it's all the same anyway."
Used to it?
What did that mean?
Pearl thought she knew Oscar well enough, but she realized there were still many secrets about him. She looked at his profile and asked, "Did they treat you like this before too? Were you isolated?"
Why?
These people were clearly older than Oscar.
They were so tolerant of Sophia; why couldn't they be more tolerant of Oscar?
He must have been very young when he was in the service.
Oscar replied, "We won't see them often in the future, so you don't need to worry too much."
"You never told me you were in the military."
Oscar looked at Pearl. "I stayed in the military. At that time, no one cared about me except Hunter, who took me in."
Pearl was a bit surprised. "Why? Where was your family?"
Oscar said nonchalantly, "They were all busy with work."
Pearl bit her lip, not quite understanding. No matter how busy, he should have stayed with The Brown family, right?
He still needed Hunter to take care of him for a while.
Besides, even if Alfonso and Hathaway didn't care about Oscar, wasn't Magdalen there?
"Then you must have saved a lot of people," Pearl asked curiously, subconsciously clenching her hand.
Oscar recalled. "I was very young then, just a teenager. I didn't remember, just focused on completing tasks and saved some people."
Pearl's guess was correct.
Oscar had saved many people, so he didn't remember them all.
Pearl asked again, "The scars on your body were left from that time?"
"Yes."
Upon hearing this, Pearl felt a bit heartbroken. He was just a teenager, still a child.
Oscar was clearly still in school.
But he had already done so many things.
As Pearl reminisced, Oscar comforted her by patting her head. "A soldier's duty is to save lives. Don't worry about what others think; as long as you know you've done the right thing, that's all that matters."
"Is it worth it?"
Oscar did good deeds, but they went unnoticed.
"Whether it's worth it or not is a matter of personal values," Oscar said. "Those days were quite fulfilling."
For him, that was all there was to it.
After eating and resting for a while, they prepared to go home.
Hunter didn't drink, but the others did and were a bit tipsy, reminiscing with arms around each other.
But none of this had anything to do with Oscar.
"Oscar, come here with Pearl often," Hunter said before they left. He suddenly thought of something and said, "It's about time you had a child, isn't it? Hurry up and have one while I can still walk and play with my grandchild."
Upon hearing this, Hunter got interested.
Pearl instinctively touched her belly.
Hunter noticed her action and asked with a smile, "Pearl, are you really pregnant?"
Pearl quickly put her hand down. "No, Hunter, Oscar and I haven't planned for a child yet."
Hunter added, "Then you should hurry up."
Oscar said to him, "If there's good news, we'll let you know."
After chatting for a while, they finally left.
At this moment, Sophia was upstairs watching them leave, still feeling unsettled.
She went back to her room and made a phone call.
"Sophia, it was your grandpa's birthday today. A lot of people must have come. Did you have a good time?" The person on the other end asked.
"No! I am not happy at all," Sophia said, feeling wronged. "That Pearl you mentioned, didn't she bully you before? I wanted to get revenge for you, but instead, I got scolded by Grandpa!"
